Playing the Game Dead Space 2 in Stereo 3D Mode with 3D Vision

I should start with the fact that the game Dead Space 2 does not yet have an official 3D Vision profile and it has some annoying issues with the default settings if you try to play it in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision. It is an UE3-based game and thus has the typical trouble with halos around the character due to the use of FogVolumes and unfortunately there is no option for the user to disable these. Apparently Nvidia has some way of forcing this to be disabled or using some sort of a workaround through their 3D Vision profiles, so renaming the game executable to “prototypef.exe” (without the quotes) for example can kind of deal with this issue, however not perfectly enough in the case of Dead Space as there are some blinking artifacts visible from time to time (different in each eye or just in one of the views – left/right). But even with that the game is much more playable then with the halo around your character…

Shadows and lights are also troublesome, as they are being rendered in 2D. With shadows you can deal easily by disabling them – set Shadow Quality to off in the in-game menu, however with lights the situation is more problematic. The workaround you can get for the lights is to stay at the lowest possible depth level and use my custom convergence settings to get some depth with the lights not being displaced. The custom convergence settings you will find below are going to work only if you have renamed the default “deadspace2.exe” executable file of the game to “prototypef.exe”. Have in mind that you should not try to play the game Prototype during that time, as with these custom settings it might no work that well.

Other things that I’ve noticed, for example there is a frame limiter of 30 fps in place, so you can safely assume that Dead Space 2 is most likely not so good console port for the PC gamers. The games has a lot of dark scenes and that also makes it hard to distinguish details in stereo 3D mode when using 3D Vision due to the reduced brightness because of the use of shutter glasses in S3D mode. So in the end it might be better to just play the game in plain 3D mode than to try to deal up with the issues in stereo 3D mode. Maybe if Nvidia releases an official profile for the game, some of the issues it has could be resolved, but that is not certain and it may take some time. Of course you are welcome you use the advice above to try and play the game in stereo 3D mode and if you do so, then you can also share your experience below… and also if you’ve discovered some other useful tips for better experience.

Playing the Game Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2010 in Stereo 3D Mode

If you, like me, had high hopes for the new Hot Pursuit 2010 game from the Need for Speed series and expected the game to perform great in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision, then you’ll be a bit disappointed. The PC version of the new Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2010 game is clearly a console port and that brings some limitations as with other such ports, so here are a few things as an example in the case of the new NFS: not the best possible graphic details, frame limit at 60 fps, crappy default controls, not very extensive in-game options, no AA control (could not force it through the NV CPL too) etc. The game itself is not bad, but nothing spectacular in my personal opinion, although I still haven’t played it a lot and I can’t yet draw an overall conclusion about the game itself, but so far I’m not very happy with what I’m seeing. One thing to note is that there is no in-car cockpit view available, but this is probably due to the fact that in the new NFS we are getting back to the classical arcade style, instead of trying to move the franchise in the field of car simulations.

The game does not yet have an official 3D Vision profile and the default settings do not work well, so you will have to play with the options for convergence, below you will find my custom convergence settings that you may try and see if they work well with you too. The custom convergence settings are made for use with low to medium depth levels, because going too high may create issues with the rendering of some 2D game elements. There is also some ghosting more visible around the clouds and some other areas with high contrast, but that also may vary a lot on the type of 3D display you are using. The game itself renders pretty well in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision actually and the only bit more serious issue is with the rendering of the shadows and disabling them from the in-game menu does not help at all. So you will have to the game config file and edit it to disable them manually and you can do that by going into “Documents\Criterion Games\Need for Speed(TM) Hot Pursuit” and opening the configuration file called “config.NFS11Save” with a text editor such as Notepad. Then you will just have to set “ShadowMapLevel=0” to disable the problematic shadows.

Playing the Game Singularity in Stereo 3D Mode with 3D Vision

Singularity is a first-person shooter developed by Raven Software and utilizing the power and flexibility of the Unreal 3 game engine, but also bringing its issues when played in stereo 3D mode. Set in an alternate present of 2010 (and back in time), where you take on the role of an US Air Force pilot who while investigating an extreme radiation signature, stumbles upon a top secret Cold War era Soviet program, run amok which not only causes monstrous mutations, but also threatens to alter nature of time itself. And being a relatively good person you make a mistake that changes both the past and the present and thus you also get the responsibility to correct your mistake and patch things up as much as possible, or the whole world is really doomed.

So, I’ll start by saying that personally liked the game (played it until the end) and most of the time I’ve played it in stereo 3D mode, partly in order to find the best custom convergence settings as there is no profile for the game already available even in the latest 3D Vision drivers. By using the Unreal 3 engine means that the game will have some issues in stereo 3D mode as most other games using the engine do, and although the Unreal engine got official stereo 3D support it will take some time for the games to start using the latest version of the engine. The typical problems with shadows and lights are here, so you may get some halos around objects with fog or fire or other effects around them to see shadows both in the left and right of an object, so it will look tripled. The HUD is 2D, so you get onscreen messages in 2D as well as the normal crosshair which is also in 2D, but when you zoom in for a closer shot through a gun, then you get a 3D crosshair. So below you may find my custom convergence settings that try to find the right balance to minimize the negative effects that you cannot overcome otherwise as by default the game looks quite flat. Still you should stay on the lowest depth level up to just a few percents above the lowest setting with the custom convergence settings for best results. If you try my settings you are more than welcome to share your comments about them below, just have in mind that they do not fix everything like a miracle and there are still some issues.
