The Movie Avatar Finally Getting a Blu-ray 3D Release Soon

August 14th, 2012 · 11 Comments · 3D Movies & Videos

James Cameron has announced in a video that his movie Avatar will soon be made available on Blu-ray 3D available worldwide and not only as a bundle for Panasonic. There is not yet an official released date announced, but it should be no later than the holiday season this year, so the wait is almost over. And considering Avatar is one of the 3D movies that you should simply have on Blu-ray 3D in your collection this release will probably generate a lot of extra revenue for the franchise. Even now you can purchase Avatar on Blu-ray 3D off eBay for example, but at a premium price for a disc that was bundled with a Panasonic TV set.

Earlier this year the agreement for the exclusive distribution of Avatar on Blu-ray 3D with Panasonic has ended, so it was to be expected that the movie will be made available on Blu-ray 3D for worldwide distribution. The exclusive deal with Panasonic probably has helped a lot the company to promote and sell their 3D-capable products, much more than the competition that also had 3D movie bundles – movies with much less consumer interest and hype surrounding them. I personally bought a Panasonic 3D HDTV, but not because of the Avatar bundle and not with Avatar bundled – I just wanted a great 3D-capable TV set and I’ve got what I’ve wanted (VT20E). But I suppose many people considered going for Panasonic, because this way they could also watch Avatar at home in 3D, actually anyone here bought a Panasonic 3D HDTV because of the Avatar bundle?

Update: Apparently the wait is almost over as Avatar Blu-ray 3D Collector’s Edition will debut globally starting October 15th, the debut in North America is set for October 16th and it is already up for pre-order.

Watch Avatar in Stereo 3D With James Cameron’s Preferred Settings

November 8th, 2010 · 11 Comments · Other S3D Tech

Panasonic has made available a special page, dedicated to providing James Cameron’s Preferred Settings for watching Avatar in 3D on a Panasonic 3D HDTV and these settings take advantage of the “Advanced (isfccc)” mode that the television sets have. This initiative is due to the fact that the company is bundling their line of Viera 3D-capable Plasma HDTVs along with a Blu-ray 3D version of the movie Avatar, an exclusive deal that probably will delay further the availability of the movie as a standalone product. And I’m curious if these settings are recommended just for watching Avatar, or they will be good for watching movies in general… I will have to try them and compare to the default THX settings for example when I start testing my new Panasonic VT20E HDTV, although I do not have Avatar on Blu-ray 3D yet ;)

Here are the recommended settings from James Cameron for Avatar 3D (for European TVs)…

Switch “Advanced (isfccc)” to ON.
Set the “Viewing Mode” to “Professional 1”.
Set the “Contrast” to “48”.
Set the “Colour” to “33”.

Set “White Balance” to the following values:
– Move the scale of “R-Gain” 10 times to the right.
– Move the scale of “G-Gain” 8 times to the left.
– Move the scale of “R-Cutoff” 2 times to the right.
– Move the scale of “B-Cutoff” 1 time to the right.

Set “Colour Management” to the following values:
– Move the scale of “R-Hue” 3 times to the right.
– Move the scale of “G-Hue” 4 times to the left.
– Move the scale of “R-Saturation” 3 times to the right.
– Move the scale of “G-Saturation” 11 times to the right.
– Move the scale of “B-Saturation” 8 times to the right.

Set “Gamma” to “2.4”.
Switch “24p Smooth Film” to OFF.
Switch “3D 24p Film Display” to OFF.

This Ain’t Avatar XXX 3D Parody Available Now from Hustler (18+)

September 28th, 2010 · 13 Comments · 3D Movies & Videos

This comes as no surprise for anyone I guess, a popular company in the adult industry like Hustler releasing an Avatar parody movie for adult audience called “This Ain’t Avatar XXX 3D”. With the big success of the original Avatar 3D movie it is no wonder that a lot of people started wanting and talking about Avatar porn (blue humanoid aliens having sex, but sex sells anything?!), even at a specific time the keyword “avatar porn” was among the most searched terms in Google. So following the big demand, the blue na’vi alien content followed in all forms and for all needs, including avatar themed 3D porn as is the case here. It is an interesting fact that this adult production is apparently quite expensive for a Porn movie and a parody and was actually shot using a 3D camera rig for true stereo 3D, instead of being some sort of a crappy 2D to 3D conversion.

“We hired a 3D camera company called SLX to come in and rent us their equipment,” said Drew Rosenfeld, creative director for Hustler Video. “This company has worked with the Discovery Channel and other reputable and established companies. We chose the best when it came to filming this project in 3D. The camera we used is a German designed camera. It uses a side by side rig and is unlike anything we’ve ever shot with before.”

They also hired a popular makeup artist in the adult industry, Lee Garland, who had the tough job to create live parody versions of the native aliens living on Pandora in order for them to be attractive when naked, did he do it properly or not is yet to be seen. Hustler already released the movie “This Ain’t Avatar XXX 3D” today and it is available on anaglyph 3D DVD for $29.99 USD as well as on a Side by Side 3D Blu-ray for $39.99 USD (however not a Blu-ray 3D!), as well as in online streaming 3D format, but apparently the DVD and the streaming versions are designed to be watched by using anaglyph red-cyan glasses. However the Blu-ray version of the movie should be in a Side by Side format, with both the DVD and the Blu-ray release of the movie also containing a second media with a normal 2D version. And who knows, maybe there will also be a Blu-ray 3D version available in the near future, if there is big interest in the parody, and it is not impossible to even see the XXX version of the movie available before the original one becomes released on Blu-ray 3D.
