Just getting back in to stereo 3D after a long absence (last time was with my E-D glasses playing Grand Theft Auto 3 on a 17" CRT Monitor). It's nice to see that this time there's a bit more choice of solutions and that 3D is becoming more mainstream, but maddening that Nvidia's 3D Vision is Win Vista/7 only when so many games still run better (or only run) in XP. Looks like I'll need to check out some of those alternatives.

I've never used the iZ3D drivers before and am struggling to get a clear idea of exactly what combinations of graphics cards, glasses/emitters and displays they support. First question: iZ3D general info says it supports any graphics card powerful enough, but the dedicated thread here says that to output to a 3D HDTV, you must have an ATi card, is that right? No support for Nvidia cards outputting to 3D HDTV?

Second question: again, support is stated for Nvidia cards but looking around the web I get the impression it doesn't work with the 3D Vision emitter & glasses. So, if I'm using an Nvidia card and iZ3D drivers but I don't have an iZ3D monitor, what are my output options?

I personally have a Sony 3D HDTV with its own shutter glasses; a 24" widescreen CRT that can do 120hz at certain resolutions; some old E-D glasses with the VGA pass-thru emitter; and in the coming months will probably be getting Nvidia 3D Vision kit too & a new 3D-capable LCD monitor. My PC has two GTX260s and I don't plan on changing this hardware soon. Out of all this kit, what (if anything) will I be able to use with iZ3D drivers?

iZ3D have stopped making their own monitors for a while now, but of course they are still supported for everyone that has them. Apart from their own monitor, they mostly support different passive solutions. Just not too long ago they introduced support for AMD/ATI HD3D technology intended for active shutter glasses based solutions. The HDMI 1.4a stereo 3D support is limited only to 5000/6000 series of Radeon GPUs, because it is partly realized in the AMD video drivers, so with your Nvidia-based GPUs you should just buy the 3DTV Play software from Nvidia in order to be able to play games on your 3D HDTV (you will be using the TV's glasses).

iZ3D has some problems with the support for shutter glasses, they are more on a product per product basis at the moment and there are just a few specific products - laptop, 120Hz LCD monitor and a AIO PC that come bundled with specific glasses that are supported. You cannot just buy an universal pair of shutter glasses that will work with any 3D-capable display.

You may be able to make things work with the CRT display and the E-D glasses if you still have them, it is worth trying, the iZ3D driver should be able to work with them, but there are no guarantees and you may have trouble getting the glasses to stay in sync properly... at least there were such trouble the last time I've tried that combination.

Ah shame, looks like iZ3D might not be so useful for me. I want to track down the old Nvidia drivers at some point - there are still some old games I want to try (like Thief, which I have heard works with the old solution) - I still have my 7900GTXs, the E-D glasses and good CRT, glad I hung on to them. But that's gonna require a separate PC built specially for that purpose, I probably won't be doing that for a while.

Right now, I'm using my main PC hooked up to the TV with Nvidia 3DTV play - I'm just on the free trial though. I'm reluctant to buy it right now, because I'm fairly sure I'm gonna be buying 3D Vision kit in the future. Paying for both would be a waste of money, but I know I won't be using 3D Vision kit for a few months at least and can't really justify the expense right now.

In general, Nvidia's solution would be fine, if not for the lack of XP support - that SUCKS! OpenGL too.

btw, great site - been reading the articles, monitor reviews & forums for a bit since I got back into s3D this time around - you really make an effort to keep people informed, thanks for that.
