Upgrading your Acer Aspire 3D laptop with latest TriDef Software

December 15th, 2009 · 25 Comments · Other S3D Tech

If you are an owner of Acer Aspire 3D AS-5738DG laptop you should know that this mobile computer uses DDD’s TriDef software to provide Stereoscopic 3D support for pictures, video and games. The laptop comes preloaded with an OEM version of the TriDef 3D software that is already not very up to date and if you use the built-in update checker you’ll get information that there is no update available for your software. But on the other hand you can download the latest TriDef 3D Software version 4.1.3 (just released today) and install it over the version that came with your laptop. The good news is that the latest software will work on your laptop and you’ll be able to take advantage of the latest features available in TriDef 3D Media Player 6.5.5 and TriDef 3D Ignition 2.4.6.

The only thing that you need to do after updating the TriDef software this way is to select the type of display the Aspire 3D laptop has, because the software will not recognize it automatically and in the OEM version only the needed mode was available. In order to do that you need to run the TriDef 3D Control Panel and select Line Interlaced (1366×768) mode or just Line Interlaced if you are going to use other resolutions than the native one by the laptop. But if you consider doing that you’ll also have to disable the automatic scaling of the image to fill the whole screen when using lower resolutions, otherwise you’ll lose the Stereoscopic 3D usability because of the different size of the stretched pixels.

To download the latest TriDef 3D Software for your Acer Aspire 3D laptop…

Thanks 4 ur brief write-up. Curious enough: When I deleted my original Win7 Partition, I discovered that neither the “ACER factory setting” backup on the HD nor on the Recovery/Application DVDs did contain the “TriDef OEM-ACER” software. ACER of course doesnt answer. Hence I´m stuck.

Did you encounter a similar prob or do you still have the “TriDef OEM-ACER” available in an installable version?

There were no recover disks in the laptop, I need to do a restore to see if the TriDef software will be automatically installed… it should, but who knows.

    Hello again! A small clarification:
    (1) Yes, I myself did the Recovery/Application+Driver DVDs (5 DVDs) right after first boot-up using the onboard ACER eRecovery Management (You probably did get asked, too).
    (2) Then there is the factory installed “Recovery partition” from ACER aka Symantec/Norton. (Alt+F10)

Neither “my” 4 RecoveryDVDs, the 5th Application+Driver DVD nor the ACER HD Recovery contain the “TriDef OEM-Acer” application. Hence it doesnt get installed, ACER doesnt reply -> stuck with a “trial copy” from Tridef :(

The 5th Application+Driver DVD “should” contain such software…

That is weird, I’ve just did a factory settings recovery with the image on the HDD and everything was available when the complete restore was finished. At first, TriDef software was not available, but the first time Windows 7 boots additional 35 step install process is being initiated (drivers and software installation) and the TriDef software is part of that and gets installed at that time…

  • 5 Urs // Dec 20, 2009 at 03:33

Thanks again for your reply :) It´s appreciated.

When I did the ACER (Alt+F10) HDD recovery there was no additional 35 step install process visible on first boot of Win7, just a couple of question like username, pw, wlan setup, etc.. and once the Desktop appeared no additional activity except the warning about creating “Recovery DVD” with the ACER eRecovery Mgmt software.

Anyway do you have the “TriDef link” on your Desktop after all processes finished? Around seven or so “TriDef” entries under root (c:\) x86\…TriDef folder?

Anyway I returned the notebook since no full 3D software doesnt make sense. I will reorder one, but honestly I´m a bit wary about getting another lemon. In such a case only a working image like yours would solve a problem since there is no support from ACER or Distributor or a secoond return :-(

Sorry to bother you so much with this annoyance.

Maybe they messed up with some of the earliest models, who knows. But just in case it …

It is good idea to open this folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\TriDef 3D\OEM-A\

And make a backup copy of the file:

This way after reinstalling the TriDef software you’d be able to import your license (double clicking on the license file).

Any idea what´s the diff between the old installed ACER version and TriDef 4.1.3? Didn´t notice any difference except for 2 new icons on desktop.

PS: I now got a working ACER replacement :)

I’m not sure exactly what version of the software comes with the Acer, but it seems to be at least a few versions old and not designed with Windows 7 in mind as event in the latest version there are still some improvements regarding the video playback to utilize Windows 7 features. There is a list of changes between the last an the previous version when you visit the link above…

I already formated my 5768DG’s hard drive. I tried installing the factory OS and settings on a virtual machine. The installation is ok, but i cannot launch it (problems with 64bits emulation). I however can access the virtual hard drive files.

But I cannot find any “Tridef” folder inside C:\
I also cannot find any Z* folder inside C:\OEM\
I also cannot find any tridef file or folder inside C:\

Do you know how I could get my activation code ?!

When the Acer is been restored to factory defaults the first thing that happens is the OS being restored from an image. After that there is a second process when the OS runs for the first time that does install all the additional software, including the TriDef software. Since you cannot launch the Windows from the virtual machine the additional software is still not available, so you probably have to look for that package that contains it on the virtual drive.

    Acer 5738DG
I cannot find TriDef 3D Control Panel.
    Pls help to locate.

  • 13 Bloody // Mar 13, 2010 at 03:49

It is not there in the default drivers, you need to update them in order to have it available… the default drivers are OEM and made to work for the Acer specifically, so no control panel is needed.

i checked out the comments and what i understand is…that if do not have the recovery disk (and don’t want to use it because i upgraded my windows) i am out of luck?

  • 15 Bloody // May 14, 2010 at 22:37

You may try to copy the TriDef license file from the old installation and then to import it after you upgrade your windows. There should also be a recovery partition also on the laptop’s hard drive with the original windows and the TriDef software.

  • 16 tiny // May 15, 2010 at 17:44

10x for the tip, i forgot about the recovery partition, have 2 see how that will go.
I have another question, where can I find special 3d movies to work with this laptop and glasses? i could only find anaglyph movies…thanks a bunch

You guys must’nt have folowed the exact instructions while creating the restore cds, mine is fine.

By the way this store is growing rapidly, because 3d TVs are using the same format, (interlaced),

you can also watch youtube in 3d with this laptop (select row interlaced).

I just want all full videos from yabazam.

I have lenovo ideapad y560 which has preinstalled tridef. now i want to upgrade to latest version. will my full version be still valid?

  • 19 Bloody // Oct 28, 2010 at 21:36

I suppose it will, just like on the Acer. But just in case backup your license file from the OEM installation and make sure you have the default installation of the version of TriDef that comes with the laptop, so that you will be able to restore it.

  • 20 AKram // Nov 1, 2010 at 09:18

But i dont have any default setup for tridef. I can restore only by restoring the entire system bckup which i do not want.

  • 21 AKram // Nov 1, 2010 at 09:19

Pls clear my doubt. I wanna upgrade my OS to another windows on my lenovo 3d laptop. I can get every lenovo drivers and softwares from lenovo website. what about tridef? How can i get the ful version am already having once i clean install a new OS. I dont have any activation code or recovery disk where i can find tridef. Pls respond

  • 22 Bloody // Nov 1, 2010 at 11:16

Look for the .TriDefLicense file, if you copy this from the default installation you should be able to import it after reinstalling the OS and installing the latest TriDef version by double clicking the license file.

  • 23 AKram // Nov 1, 2010 at 12:36

will double clicking the license file activate to full version if i have a new OS? any1 tested?

  • 24 AKram // Nov 1, 2010 at 12:38
