How to Get the Best Stereo 3D Experience in Borderlands 2

The game Borderlands 2 is out now in some regions and should be released in others as well in the next few days. We’ve already expected Borderlands 2 to have good stereoscopic 3D support and now that the game is out we can check this out. 3D Vision gamers would probably want to install the latest video drivers or at least to update their profiles if they haven’t done that yet. The profile that Nvidia provides for 3D Vision rates the game as Good and indeed it is not perfect in stereoscopic 3D mode, though the default experience you get is indeed good. There are some issues that are present when you render the game in stereoscopic 3D mode, for example you can do a Cycle Frustum adjustment using CTRL + F11 to get the image on screen properly displayed and not cut in one of the eyes at the screen edge. The HUD elements are also rendered in 3D, or at least most of them are and that makes it a harder to get a really high depth level along with a proper convergence level to allow for a lot of depth and some pop-out, something that more experienced stereo 3D users want to have. The good news is that at least Convergence is now locked, but playing with it can introduce problems with shadow rendering, so you need to be careful with that, and there are some other issues also present…

So there is more to be desired from Borderlands 2 in terms of stereoscopic 3D support with 3D Vision, but thanks to the Helix and his shader modification tool and Eqzitara who used it to make fixes and prepare a guide on how you can further improve the experience you can get when playing Borderlands 2 in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision. So if you’ve already got the game and want to enjoy it in stereoscopic 3D mode, then you should take a look at the Borderlands 2 3D Vision Patch by Eqzitara.

    Thanks bloody, I am truly grateful. I have been a visitor for years and it means alot.

    Yeah, I have NO IDEA what happened with Gearbox/2kgames. Developers been saying they’d have support for months now. Nvidia site is listed as supported/devs said support/ they sold 3d monitor bundles on newegg…The game even had a profile listed as good in driver notes for like 6 months. If they honestly planned to cap convergence where I think they were thats extremely low.
    I still have some plans to improve hud, not sure how it will pan out yet.

    Great, will sure take a look! Yesterday I tried the game for a short period and was disapointed, the overlay text is all wrong and the blood was not looking good. While the menu are really nice in 3D, when you play the game the depth is so low that everything looks 2D.

    I’ll give this a try…

    Again thanks bloody! You really got me motivated.
    I dont know what gearbox was thinking, they could do it better then I could just by forcing the hud at like 80% depth. Instead of basing a game around a broken hud, Ill just fix the hud.
    New version is up and tommorrow huds should be resolved for all users regardless of depth/convergence setting.

    Yea, wasnt thinking…. I put WIP in title which is just a stupid idea. Since you cant change it without renaming it.

    it looks great but unless I turn the depth way down it has a lot of ghosting for me.

    Looking down the sight of a rifle definately is great and when standing in front of a vendor the “hand”-panel really comes forward but i really wish there was a way to turn up the depth a little more.

    Play with your contrast can help. I use DLP so I dont have any. Look for one of the reviews of monitors and bloody talks about ways to reduce and optimal settings.

    Hey Eqzitara! I just wanted to say thanks for the fix! LOVING IT. Are there any plans to separate the crosshair from the rest of the HUD? It would be awesome if it adjusted depth to surfaces it’s cast on.

    Part of the HUD use something like swf(flash format) where each point (vertex) has color value.
    So the game draws crosshair not from texture , it uses colors from vertex buffer.

    I wouldn’t count on it being fixed and if Helix decides to take a crack at fixing the crosshairs then we may have to wait a while, assuming it is possible. The original Borderlands had the same problem but they made the crosshair dynamic in a later patch. Hopefully the devs will do the same for this one.

    I added depth hud adjustments, pretty much the best its gonna get imo. I think huds fine tbh. I play at 80% depth and use Default (F3) and it plays wonderfully. I dont think its a big deal but I definitely think the devs should really do this last bit and do dynamic crosshairs(they can force scopes on rifles/rifles max depth). If they will *shrug*. I dont think its worth Helix’s time to seperate hud elements because its in a format that only this game uses.

    I talked to helix, and he is still gonna try but it will take time. If you want to wait on playing *shrug* thats up to you. It may work out/may not. He has a lot of stuff planned and he is the only one capable of doing this high end programming.(I am like a toddler compared to him). It may get backlogged for a while as well… so yeah. Thats how it is i Guess.

    I just wanted to throw this out there, there is a patch upcoming for this title to make it 3d vision ready rather than just “Good”. No clue on when it drops, but I’ll be sure to let you guys know when I know more!

    Especially since, the last borderlands adding 3d crosshair was its form of support. Which is only thing my patch needs.

    Anywho I think your “contact” means nvidia updating the driver to the correct profile. In which case I am aware.

    Check the writers comments after the blog. It’s not a driver update, it’s a game patch coming to fix the issues.

    …I’m not talking about your patch, I haven’t even touched the helix-mod for it because I have to do an article on the game as-is. As such, I can’t install your patch until I’ve completed everything on this anyway man. No need to get so defensive!

    Gearbox is making a patch to make the game 3d-ready. Rather than jumping to conclusions, maybe do a bit of research on that fact? I posted a link to NVidia specifically speaking about it.

    I appreciate everything the helix community is doing for 3d vision, I was merely informing everyone that there’s an official patch coming to fix the issues with the title in 3d. No need to blow-torch the messenger.

    (I wrote that comment days ago and it didnt post till now)
    I apologize, I couldnt imagine any reason why a person would not install the patch. I was a bit insulted for what I took the remark personally. I felt like borderlands 2 was my best work to date and that hit a soft spot. Im generally a good guy. I do apologize though.

    Im not sure what to believe out of NVIDIA tbh though. They have been closer contact with us lately but *shrug* so much gets said, rather then done. Especially since the guy replies with that information to a person who cant even get 3D to load in game….

    That post isn’t my only source, it’s just the first one I found online. No hard feelings either way, I wasn’t trying to insult you–I actually thoroughly enjoy the work you guy’s do (and actually am trying to get the green-light to write an article about it for the site I work for), and point anyone who is new to 3d vision right in your direction.

    I’ll check out your patch while waiting for the official patch as soon as my article is complete, which in all honesty should be today or tomorrow. I have no ETA on the official patch, all I know is that there is one coming.
