July 20th, 2011 · 16 Comments · Stereo 3D Games

The long-awaited patch version 1.3 for the game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is now available for download and it comes with some new features that should’ve been there right from the start as well as improved stereoscopic 3D Support for 3D Vision users. Below are the two things from the release notes of the new patch related to gamers using 3D Vision:

– Issues with nVidia 3D Vision technology have been resolved. Players no longer need to uninstall the related drivers.
– Assorted improvements have been made in the game’s 3D Vision, SLI and Crossfire functionality.

You can read the full list of 50 points that the new patch 1.5 covers – bug fixes, new features, game improvements etc on the download page linked below. And of course you are welcome to share your comments on how the game works in stereoscopic 3D mode after applying the new patch.

The game box has more 3D Vision logos that CDProjekt ones, and the 3D support is still broken.
-On launch the game was accessng 3D stuff even if 3D was not active ( need to kill the service or uninstall 3D Vision completly ) so even the 2D performance was low.
-In patch 1.1-1.2: game looks great, performance hit over 66% ( say 45fps in 2D gets you 15fps) in 3D Vision; while iZ3D has only 50% performance hit as it should while the shadows are Mono!!!
-In patch 1.3: game performance while in 3D Vision is fixed BUT now the nVidia 3D has the Mono shadows!!! ( did not test iZ3D but I won’t hold my breath )

    Shadows can’t be disabled.

Not to mention the way they fixed resolution support ( was 16:9 only on launch ): http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2149/541213fixvs.jpg FFS :(

Yeah, what shit CD Project are doing? Do they not test before release.

With 1.2 the performance in 3D are horrible, but all looks fine.

Now with 1.3 the performance are better but i cannot play it anymore cause the shadows are now in 2D, and thats horrible for the eyes when play in 3D!

Hope there comes a fast HOTFIX!!!

I am using beta driver 275.50 with gtx 465 in sli and the framerate seems to have increased while playing the game on ultra in 3d vision. however i still see terrible ghosting on areas where sunlight hits objects in the game. i guess i am having the same problems as the comment left by serious. the framerate has increased for me playing in non 3d i now average from 45 fps to 70 fps on ultra (no uber sampling) the game seems smoother. it is weird that disabling 3d vision in the 3d control panel gives the game about a 30 fps boost. i would think that simply pressing the 3d vision emitter button should be enough to boost the fps back to normal non-3d framerates.

overall i am on my third playthrough and i must say that the witcher 2 is truly an incredible experience. playing it twice was nearly completely different each time (based on my choices and who i was friends with).

is the ghosting minimized with driver 275.33?

With this patch the guys at CDPR turned this game from “unplayable” to “totally unplayable”. Yes, the performance has increased – at the cost of outdoor shadows being rendered in 2D.

Not only are those guys utterly incompetent – they also are really bad lyers. According to an official post on their forum “3D vision has been thoroughly tested before the patch has been released”.

Not sure what sort of 3D vision they have there in Poland but it sure as hell isn’t working with any 3D kit I have seen.

to call the creators of one of the best pc games ever made “utterly incompetent” is a little harsh. yes 3d vision in this game still sucks however the game is still great. they did not necessarily lie, they simply stated it was thoroughly tested, which obviously did not lead to much .

“to call the creators of one of the best pc games ever made…”

Your opinion… And I’m agree, they are totally incompetent… at least for testing their game…

Knowing these guys and how they handled the first Witcher i haven’t a doubt that they will surely get 3D right eventually (the first witcher had many technical issues that were corrected, not to mention significant free content was released going on a year after the games release). Until that happens however I have no intention of giving them my money which i’d very much like to do.

Try reinstall game and only 1.2 patch.
Now tested and all shadow ok.
Ha a már meglévő játékra rakja fel valaki a patcheket akkor valószínüleg nem lesznek jók az árnyékok.2D-be maradnak.
Én újra raktam a játékot,az 1.2patchet automatikusan fel is rakja.
Így most minden ok a játékban (árnyékok stb…)
    Az 1.3patchet még nem próbáltam.

I agree completely with Daniel Strange.

I have confidence that CDP and Nvidia will fix the Witcher 2.
It could be a stunning example of 3DVision if it worked.

  • 12 artox // Jul 25, 2011 at 10:24

Yes, CDP worked really hard on W1 and released several patches, but let’s not forget that they used an already old engine. The aurora engine was heavily modified, but it was old tech, not like the new red engine. Back then there weren’t many people raising voices on several issues, the fan base was pretty small, unlike now. If you as me, proper s-3d functionality is not a front-runner in their priority list. I suggest reducing separation to a minimum and setting convergence from there. This way you can get most of the shadows to look ok and will enjoy a pop-out effect. Beats waiting for a fix. If convergence is locked just do the alt+tab and process disabling trick .

I don’t care if 3D Vision is a priority for them or not, the bottom line is I have a retail box in hand that has the “3D Vision Ready” logo on it.

The thing that bugs me the most about the 3D Vision problems with this game is that there was enough information presented in thread on the 3D Vision forum detailing the performance bug initially and the disable stereoscopic driver services hack that gave us the same performance and shadow problems that the patch is giving us now. Yes, you have to skim past a lot of pointless arguing and flaming but the information was there. I also don’t like the official response on the GOG.com forum that said they considered 3D Vision fixed now.

I guess there is nothing we can do now but wait but from my experiences with 3D game issues, especially with shadows, I don’t think Nvidia can fix it with a driver release. I already saw that ManuelG posted that the upcoming driver release this week does not to address this.

I have installed Witcher 2 completly new and the game autoinstalls patch 1.3 directly after installation, but Shadows are still in 2D under 3D.

I although tested the new NVIDA Beta Driver 280.xx, it brings nothing. (i thinked about Alice Madness Returns who some objects renders in 2D at the beginning, but with a new nvidia driver the problems are gone, but badly not in the witcher 2)

So CDP can tell me what they want, but they never tested the game in 3D with patch 1.3. They cannot tell me that no one have noticed the shadow problem…

Over a week is gone no and no hotfix for that, thats very very bad!

I had a lot of problems myself with the shadows and, unfortunately, with the 1.3 patch it was unplayable. There are two ways to solve the problem:
1.patch 1.2, but the game also automatically install later patches, so you can craaccare and register the product and providing EFIGS package with the patch, with nvidia driver 275.33
2.disinstallare and reinstall the nvidia driver version 275.33, uninstall and reinstall the W2 and update it to patch 1.35, in this way, strangely works without problems of shadows, but only after you have reinstalled everything.
With the nvidia driver 280.26, I have always had problems with shadows, but I have not tried uninstalling the nvidia driver and install new ones.
I hope to be liked …
