Another Afternoon in HK 3D, a Stereoscopic 3D Skate Video

November 13th, 2010 · 15 Comments · 3D Movies & Videos

This is a stereoscopic 3D skate video staring Ing. Máry Čejchan, Řetěz alias Aleš Lehotský and Bery Bernkraut, HK sk8park master. It was shot in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic by donein3D who kindly shared it with us. The video was shot using two Gopro HD Pro cameras and two Sony Z1s in a custom stereoscopic 3D camera rig. The file available for download is in Side by Side, 1080p half horizontal resolution (squashed), so don’t forget to select 16:9 aspect ratio when opening the video. You can also watch it online through YouTube 3D. And don’t forget to leave your comments about the video below…

Contains some nice clips, but the cameras sometimes aren’t synchronized well. Several scenes cause headaches because the time difference between right and left eye is so big. Still, all in all, it’s a nice video, and the slow motion quality is great in the scenes without time lag.

Wonder why they don’t offer full set of viewing options on YouTube instead of only anaglyph options.

When properly uploaded, YT take care of adding all the options, no? I don’t have a YT account so I can’t tell but I saw many other videos that offer all options.

Rhialto: it’s up to you which 3d mode you choose in youtube 3d – just click the 3d button on the player. red/blue anaglyph is default.

they have changed that menu recently, so you have to click the 3d button, then the glasses button, the choose the right setup and then choose go to previous page. kinda sux :(

johnny: is it really that bad? u cant go below 1/50 sec sync with current setup :(

jan husak: I noticed you didn’t comment that youtube is broken, maybe it’s because it’s not in your computer. Here, and with a lot of other people, after we select the viewing method and click ‘go to the previous page’, the method we chose isn’t saved.

OIC! Now I was able to see the various viewing method but like Adonis, I was not able to see the last two posted videos in any other mode than anaglyph.

adonis, rhialto: i can’t do anything with that issue, sorry guys… blame the youtube ;( the new menu really sux, i don’t understand why they have implemented it this way
if you have firefox 4 beta 6 or higher (only), you can go to 3dfeed site to watch in different modes: http://www.3df33d.tv/node/309

That video has several spots with vertical misalignment, like @ 2:10. The beginning of your “Tatra 815 testing at Senica, SK 3D” video has similar issue at the very beginning, otherwise it is very nice. BTW, sync of the cameras must be very tight if you are going to move them, 50/60p is not tight enough when the camera is on a stabilizer, IMHO. But all in all very nice, and nice content. Thanks.

There is a temporary work around the YT 3D bug. I am sure that they will eventually fix it. This is not Jan’s problem and it is not fair to complain to him about it. Complain to YT. This is not the first time they released either untested or poorly tested S/W, and didn’t tell anyone after the bug was reported to them. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHqEuMOP5F0

Pavel: thanks for the trick, I was able to watch it the way I wanted. And I never complained to jan, I was saying it’s not working here.

Sorry, I didn’t mean it as strongly as it came out. I am actually quite frustrated with YT. This is not the first time the 3D player was released and not working correctly in such an obvious way, they obviously do not test it.

do we have any other option for publishing stereo videos besides yt3d?

pavel houda: you got czech name, jsi z cech? nejaky primy kontakt na tebe?

To Pavel and jan: My intention also wans’t to complain, I was just curious because everyone I know is experiencing the problem. Thanks for the hints guys.

We all know, that YouTube is currently experiencing a bug, where it doesn’t want to leave the current default 3D display mode (red & cyan in my case). There are work arounds, and YT claims that they have a fix, which should be released on Thursday. On the bright side, this new release includes a checkerboard pattern output, to drive directly DLP TV’s. That is quite good news. They also claim that they will be changing their test process.

It all seems to be working fine now.

Actually I am still having problems with IE, Firefox seems to work. There is probably still slew of bugs. I’ve spoken too soon, sorry.
