Happy Birthday to me with a New 3D HDTV – Panasonic TX-P50VT20E

October 27th, 2010 · 35 Comments · Other S3D Tech

I was not planning to get a 3D HDTV now, I’ve planned this for the holiday season at the end of the year, although I kind of needed one for testing with the official announcement of the 3DTV Play from Nvidia and the recent announcement of HDMI 1.4a support with AMD’s HD3D Technology. However for my birthday, which is today, I decided to get myself a 3D HDTV and the choice was Panasonic TX-P50VT20E after a careful consideration of all pros and cons of what is currently available on the market.

Simply said the things kind of look like this at the moment with the 3D HDTVs – Panasonic plasma for best overall image quality in 2D and 3D, but no 2D-to-3D conversion (for the higher-end models) and not the most convenient shutter glasses. Sony are kind of in the middle in terms of image quality and features, but so far their active shutter glasses are with the best design in and features of all I’ve seen. Samsung 3D LCDs and Plasma are good in terms of quality, but their advantages are the better prices and the most widely supported 3D input formats of all 3D HDTVs on the market – they go beyond just HDMI 1.4’s frame packaging, Side by Side and Over/Under as most others do, but that may not be an advantage for everyone.

So you can expect a review of the Panasonic sometime soon, as well as more information and testing about it when used with 3DTV Play and AMD’s HD3D Technology for playing games, videos, photos etc. in stereo 3D format on it. Of course I’m quite interested to compare the performance to a 120Hz LCD monitor as I’m sure quite a lot of people are interested in that too and not just me. So stay tuned for more on that pretty soon…

Честито Тони и приятно изкарване на празника!Аз също получих за подарък 50″s20 ,и чувството е страхотно.Да не забравиш да го разработиш преди тестовете,че ще е грехота да го заносиш отрано.

Happy B-day and congrats for the new toy!

When I was choosing a 3D HDTV, the short list consisted of the 50-inch VT20, the 65-inch Panny and the 63-inch Samsung. In the end I went for the Samsung because the larger Panny was way too expensive and the 50-inch one is too small ;)

    Happy Birthday !
I’m eager to read a review from you concerning this plasma TV since I have seen and tested it several times and 3D is very good (but crosstalking is still visible in some scenes) but it also suffers retention (like every other plasma) and worst of all it seems to have a not so good deinterlacer which makes it unsuitable to watch TV programs and some DVDs.
That is why I’m still waiting to buy a 3D TV.

    Happy B-day!
Funny I just got the Sammy 63″ c8000 for my Bday last week.
Still wondering when the model will show up on the Nvidia 3DTV play support list though.

Happy BD Anton! Let us know how you like the Panny, this is the one I plan to buy as well, and very soon. And big CONGRATS to iWATCH3D for what is probably the first 3D shooting of a Bugatti Veyron in history!

    Happy birthday!
I have the same display and you won’t be disappointed!
Will you be testing AMD HD3D with any Radeon 5000 series cards? I can’t get it to work at all, so I’m eager to hear about your experience with HD3D.

  • 21 Rhialto // Oct 27, 2010 at 18:16

    Happy Birthing Anton.

Was the VT25 available in your country? Just curious since I’ve read it has a few differences but maybe not important.

That’s probably the set I would go for too if I was to buy today. I like that the glasses are not polarized thus you can tilt your head and look on sides and still see full HD quality.

    Have fun!

    happy birthday

i have the exact same model and i can say it is amazing, it still has ghosting issues but they are far less than any lcd i have seen .
I have been using 3dtv play since the 260 beta drivers and it is working problem free, i prefer 720p resolution because the 60fps make a lot of difference in gameplay and to tell you the truth you cannot tell much difference, it has an excellent scaler.

one more thing i played split second which had an annoying 24fps cap but when i enabled intelligent frame creation from the menu it played smoothly as if it was 60fps, i guess you can use this in other low frame situations in 2d only and get smoother frames…

    Честит Рожден Ден!

BTW, all of the older VT20 (50+”) models will have the 2D-to-3D conversion feature at a later time via firmware update (not that it’s important ;)), so don’t worry. Also, all Panasonic 3DTVs will be compatible with the newer (better) glasses, but you’ll have to buy them additionally , of course.
You didn’t say anything about LG’s Plasma 3DTVs, like the PX950, it has good reviews and it’s the first 3DTV to have the 3D THX certification/profile. Unfortunately, it’s not yet available in our country as far as I know.

    Happy Birthday from Minnesota.

I visit your website daily, and I enjoy reading the articles you post. Great work. Thanks.

I also went with the Panasonic in a p50-vt25. I love it. I have not seen much in 3d gaming, but I’m really excited for it.

I agree about the glasses though, they are really uncomfortable and awkward. Lately, I’ve been digging for information on the Xpand x103 universal and new Panasonic glasses. Not sure which ones I’m going to get yet. That could make for a great review.

    Thanks, and enjoy your day!

There will be more about the 3D HDTV coming in the next few days, I also need to finish with the 200 hour break-in before starting to test the TV’s performance.

    Happy Birthday Anton,

For those of you owners of Samsung 3D Plasma’s, wait no more for Nvidia support, If you can afford a receiver, get a new HDMI 1.4 receiver and be happy!!!! 3DTV Play fully works with those receivers + Sammy 3D Plasma.
    I got a Onkyo – HT-S3300 receiver HT-R380
