Wipeout-like Games for PC that Work and Look Good in Stereo 3D Mode

July 7th, 2010 · 12 Comments · Stereo 3D Games

If you like high-speed racing games like Wipeout on the PS3, but want to play them in stereo 3D on your computer it seems that you do not have a lot of luck. There are simply no popular big-name games that offer something similar for the PC, however there are sole a bit old games that you might like playing if you manage to get them. Sure, you can now play Wipeout HD in 3D on the PS3 if you also have a big 3D HDTV to go along withe console, but if you only have a 3D Vision kit and a PC you have to find an alternative. And here are some alternatives as an idea, there might be others as well, so feel free to report them if you know about anything else than the following three games. Have in mind that these are not perfect hen played in stereo 3D mode, but with a little bit of convergence tweaking you can still get very good results…

Powerdrome is a futuristic racing game where you race a jet-engined, anti-gravity bikes called “blades” around six closed tracks. The original game called Powerdrome was released in 1988 for Atari with a Pc release in 1990, but here I’m talking about the remake that was made in 2004 for consoles and in 2005 for PC. The game never became very popular, but this is probably the closest thing you can get on the PC as a feeling compared to Wipeout on consoles. Unfortunately it is now hard to find the game, but you can probably get a very good deal on a used copy over at eBay…

Some more information about Powerdrome…

Pyroblazer is also a futuristic racing game, but it also has some combat elements added which makes it closer in terms of gameplay style to Wipeout. In this game you pilot a futuristic anti-gravity combat crafts called Blazers and compete with the other players trying to finish first at all costs. Pyroblazer has been released in 2008 and the good news is that it is available on Steam and you can easily get the game currently for $19.99 USD or 9.99 EUR…

Voltage (Voltage: Супергонки) is another game that has only been released for PC in 2008, but only Russian if I’m not mistaken, the only English version seems to be available only for PS3, and this is actually making the game even harder to find and maybe understand (depending on how good are you with Russian). The game itself is another high-speed racing simulation with combat elements over a futuristic racing tracks where the gold is as usual to be the fastest on the track and finish first, no matter how.

Additional information in Russian on the publisher’s website…

As I’ve mentioned, if you know another more recent game similar to Wipeout for the PS3, but a one that is made for PC and works good or why not even perfect in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision, then feel more than welcome to share information about it in the comments below. ;)

Interesting post. From the shots I think Voltage looks the best to me.
Is there a way to order the game on a “trusted” site?
Even better, is there a downloadable version I can buy?
Also the requirements seem to state a XP/Vista in Russian. Is that true?

The 3D make the game so much better :)

As for your question about other games similar to Wipeout…
There is an old game called Star Wars Racer.

Has anyone tried that in 3D already?

Original Wipeout 2097 for Windows demo available at http://download.cnet.com/3001-7518_4-10009543.html?spi=fa47f8206d36c867785ef777254b67fa
    Turn on Win95 compatibility mode.
Turn on V-sync and set screen to 30hz or drink several energy drinks to keep up at 100+ fps…
May not run on 64bit systems.

Better readme file in this with more details. Forgot to mention that you should choose No when asked to install DirectX 3 :)

setup.exe fails in Win7 64bit, others got it to run on XP 32bit.

This isnt nvidia related, but you can play n64 games using an project64 if you are using the iz3d driver, which only works for stereo solutions other than nvidia, and of course there is a very very trippy game called f-zero X…
