Back in the days when we were using only CRT TVs some of the old consoles (dating back even to the old Atari 2600 and the first NES, although the light gun technology was developed back in the 30s of last century) there were the so called Light Guns that allowed you to use a gun as a controller in some games. But now, since almost everyone has an LCD or Plasma TV, LCD monitor or even a projector the conventional light guns are not usable anymore. So a new generation of light guns was developed that actually uses external sensor bars (array of LEDs) to track the position and movement with the help of a tiny camera in the front of the gun. The biggest advantage of this method is that the Light Gun becomes usable with any kind of display solution, no matter if it is a Monitor, TV, or even a projector – 2D or a 3D one and that is what makes it more attractive. Imagine using a 3D DLP projector to play your favorite shooter game on a big display and with a Light Gun, instead of using a mouse… definitely brings things a step further to feeling even more real, so here are a few options for you if you are interested…
EMS TopGun II
This is probably one of the first universal solutions that supports PC and Console use on a newer TV set or even a projector, the second version just offers some improvements over the first one.
XFPS (Storm) light gun – PC Version
This light gun on the other hand is one of the most recent light guns announced, made by XCM, and you probably can notice that the design is greatly influenced by the Nintendo Wii. This one is only for PC, but there is also a different console version available for PS3 owners.
Just have in mind that these light guns are intended for FPS games, so if you don’t play shooters there is no big point. Also if you are closing one of your eyes while aiming with a gun this can be an issue if playing a game in stereo 3D mode as you are actually going to loose the 3D effect and will not be able to aim correctly at the target. So there are some things you’ll need to consider before going to add a light gun as an accessory to your 3D gaming computer. And these are just some ready to use solutions that you can get, if you are willing to experiment there are a lot of things to be done, but that also may requires some specific knowledge and a lot of free time… ;)
