Here is a short stereoscopic 3D video from the game Resident Evil 5 made by Hot Girls in 3D, showing Sheva’s Sexy Tribal Outfit. The RE5 in-game video is available on YouTube 3D or as a downloadable file from the links below. The video is in Side by Side format and although not in Full HD, but half HD resolution it is still with a good quality. And this reminds me that you can easily record stereo 3D videos with FRAPS and if you record some interesting in-game footage in 3D that you want to share you are more than welcome to do so here or in the forum…

Recently there are some interesting hings happening around Nvidia’s 3D Vision solution for stereoscopic 3D gaming and movie and photo viewing, so here is what is new in brief…

You know that the game Dark Void has been out for a few days already and it is the latest title to support PhysX and 3D Vision, however the profile in the 3D Vision drivers rates the game as Good and not Excellent as you’d expect from an official (?) 3D Vision title. The game has been developed by Capcom, the same guys that made the Resident Evil 5 – the first official 3D Vision-optimized title that came out (the PC version only).

Some of the issues that Dark Void has are due to the use of Unreal engine ant it is not handling perfectly well in stereoscopic 3D mode, so basically most of the games based on it have some issues that need to be fixed afterwards. A good example for a game that is also based on the same Unreal engine, but has been constantly improved to offer good stereoscopic 3D support for 3D Vision is Borderlands. The developers from Gearbox have been constantly improving the 3D Vision support and they just released a new patch version 1.21 that adds 3D crosshair in the game instead of the 2D one when playing in S3D mode.

After five days or exactly on February 9th the game Bioshock 2 should become available. And this is supposedly to be another 3D Vision-ready title and if you ask me is much more interesting and can look really great in stereoscopic 3D mode if it is done right. And especially after the success of the first BioShock, everyone is expecting a lot from the sequel.

Another interesting game title expected next month, March 16th is Metro 2033. This game is supposed to be something like a post-apocalyptic FPS with some RPG elements, with the action going on underground in the Russian Metro, the year is 2033 and what is left of the humanity is just trying to survive in the harsh post-apocalyptic world. This game should support DirectX 10, take advantage of PhysX and officially be 3D Vision-ready, so you should put it in your to look forward to list of games.

Some other games that might be officially 3D Vision-ready are the upcoming on February 16th Aliens vs Predator with its multiplayer demo just released and available for download over Steam (this one is supposed to be DirectX 11 and ATI Eyefinity title, so official 3D Vision-readiness is a bit questionable). There is also the expected to be released on March 2nd Battlefield: Bad Company 2, another first-person shooter that is currently undergoing a beta testing stage.

Finally if you already own a 3D Vision kit you might complete a short survey that Nvidia is currently conducting regarding the accessories that come with their shutter glasses. So if you have a spare minute you can fill in the few simple questions, absolutely anonymous, providing some feedback on how you use the product and this way maybe help improving the next version of the 3D Vision….

- To fill in the 3D Vision Accessories survey currently being conducted by Nvidia…

I’m continuing with some official information about the first 3D Vision Ready Game – Resident Evil 5 for PC that is already out in USA, Asia and Korea (since 15th September), launched today in Japan and it should be officially available in Europe tomorrow. Just to prepare you on what to do and how to play the game for getting the best possible Stereoscopic 3D experience here are some tips, but first just a short intro about the game. Resident Evil 5 starts somewhere in Africa, where innocent villagers are transforming into ruthless abominations… or Zombies and we all like to call them. You are Chris Redfield and together with your new partner, Sheva Alomar, you must stop whatever is causing the disturbing turn of events…

Now what is especially interesting about the PC version of RE5 is that with it you will be the first to experience stereoscopic 3D out of screen effects as your living room is transformed into the world of Kijuju (as Nvidia and Capcom state). Infected Majini coming at you from every angle, dust flying in and out of screen and the scariest bosses to date are taken up a notch. Resident Evil 5 PC is a whole new level of fear you’ll never forget if you play the game with 3D Vision equipped system, bringing it to the maximum possible realism level. Up until this point, games have taken advantage of “Depth of Field” effects that make the game appear as though the player is looking through a window into the game world. But the holy grail of 3D is “Out-of-Screen” effects (although a bit more tiring for the eyes and the brain), and Resident Evil 5 is among the first games to exploit out-of-screen effects, making thrown objects and zombie blood appear as if they are literally popping out of the screen (note that it is not everywhere and everything that is popping out of the screen, but actually just a few things). Resident Evil 5 is also the first game to support Stereoscopic 3D *EVERYTHING* – all levels, menus, and cut-scene movies (cinematics) can all be experienced in 3D using NVIDIA 3D Vision… even the start-screen and in-game item menus are in 3D.

And here is what Nvidia recommends as best settings to really enjoy the games in Stereoscopic 3D mode with 3D Vision, just don’t forget that it is recommend to have at least Nvidia GeForce GTX260 for these settings to deliver comfortable gameplay. Set the Screen Resolution to 1680×1050 and Refresh Rate to 120Hz, and also optionally you can disable Motion Blur for better S3D effect in the game when using 3D Vision. And even if you still don’t have the GeForce 3D Vision shutter glasses and a compatible display you may still play the game in S3D mode with GeForce 3D Vision Discover or another plain paper anaglyph (red/cyan) glasses, but with not that good level of realism (don’t forget the disadvantages of the anaglyph technology).

As you probably already know Resident Evil 5 is just about to hit the shelves in two days and a lot of people expect the game to perform great with 3D Vision and other S3D setups, because it is being advertised as the first 3D Vision optimized game. And it is, as you can see the 3D Vision drivers have a profile up and ready for the game and the rating says “3D Vision Ready”, so everything should be great, right? Well it almost is, but of course there is always more to be desired…

Lets start with the fact that the game does not allow you to change the convergence level manually, it has been preset by Capcom at a certain level and you have to stick with it, being able to only control the depth level. Of course Capcom did a great job in choosing very good convergence level, at least for users of the 22″ 120Hz LCDs, but for owners of bigger screen HDTVs or 3D-ready projectors things might not go that well. Anyway the preset convergence level is good, but it stays this way only when you are using low depth level and if you increase it more you might start seeing ghosting on the objects that are far from where your character stands. The game is good to go for up to about 30-50% (depending on the person) level of depth with just some minor ghosting that some people might even not notice or just learn to ignore, but for more the ghosting gets more severe and is not recommended for usage. Other than that the game looks great with S3D, unfortunately with not that much pop-out of the screen effect… unless of course you increase the depth level more, when things will improve a bit.

Something that I personally did not like about the PC version of the Resident Evil 5, and that is not related to S3D, is that the controls are awful if you consider playing with your keyboard and mouse and most people using PCs with 3D Vision will probably do just that. As the RE5 for PC is actually a port of the game that was released earlier this year for consoles, the game has been designed with gamepads in mind, so going to this instead of the keyboard and mouse combination might be a good idea. This is a common problem for console games ported to PC, but I did expect somebody to think about this a bit, after all the game is partially a shooter and with a keyboard and mouse control it can be made a bit better. Anyway I’ll still play the game because I like the series and on a PC because of it being 3D Vision Ready, instead on a console… ;)

Here are the slides of an interesting presentation Nvidia had on Siggraph 2009 about 3D Stereo implementation and usage in games and other 3D applications. Some interesting things about S3D in general and of course a little bit about 3D Vision and 3D Vision Discover. The presentation covers more the technical part of how things work and are being designed with an emphasis on some key technology challenges and how many of them are easily addressed by some basic implementation patterns. The presentation also includes some good anaglyph Stereo 3D screenshots so if you have a pair of anaglyph glasses lying around you can try to see them with the intended depth perception. Still a good read if you were unable to be attending Siggraph 2009, but you are interested in the technology and how things work. The presentation was made by Samuel Gateau from Nvidia and there seems to be something from Capcom about their upcoming Resident Evil 5 that is supposed to be optimized for Nvidia’s 3D Vision hardware. Unfortunately the slides from Capcom’s presentation are still missing.

Some time ago I’ve written about some interesting upcoming games that are expected to have official 3D Stereo support available in them in the form of anaglyph or 3D Vision S3D support and Disney’s G-Force game was among them. Now the game is out and it really disappointed a lot of people expecting it to be good in 3D especially when combined with Nvidia’s GeForce 3D Vision kit simply because the PC version doesn’t support any form of stereo 3D – not in anaglyph or 3D Vision. Now we did not expect to have some sort of a great game coming out for something that is based on a movie, because most of the movie-based games are coming out to be average at best with lot of them raging from total bullshit to something that might be considered for a good time waster. You can say that Disney’s G-Force is below the average, but still might be fun for some kids to play it and the thing that might’ve made it worth playing was the expected 3D Stereo support which did not happen for the PC version of the game… why?

Anyway, you should be aware that Disney’s G-Force Game is available with versions for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP so you can pretty much get it and play it on any of these. But if you want to be able to play the game in Stereoscopic 3D mode you need to get either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions of the game, because only they come with anaglyph glasses and the needed mode to play with it. If you own a PC and buy the game to play it with Nvidia’s GeForce 3D Vision you will be disappointed so please do not buy it just for that – save your money and the trouble. And there is on anaglyph mode available for the PC version so even if you wanted to try it out with anaglyph glasses you are screwed so just don’t bother with G-Force anymore and get your fingers crossed for the release of Resident Evil 5 for PC and that it will really rock in S3D as we all hope and as Nvidia and Capcom says.

And if you are still not really ready to give up completely on Disney (hey you are not a small kid anymore, right?) you might get some hopes from the fact that in the fall they should release another Stereo 3D-ready game title. This time it will be exclusive for Nintendo Wii console owners and the game is called Toy Story Mania!, and you probably guessed it will be based on the movie with the same title from 1995, but the game is expected to also feature anaglyph stereo 3D experience.

As promised, here are my first personal experiences with using the Resident Evil 5 Benchmark along with GeForce 3D Vision. It seems that the Residen Evil 5 will have both DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 modes as the benchmark has them both and you can run in either of them, although you should know that the DX9 version is unable to run in 3D Vision. So in order to test your performance with 3D Vision enabled and working you should run the benchmark in DirectX 10 mode…

Then you can setup the the game to 1680×1050 resolution with maximum details without AA and run the variable benchmark in order to get a real in-game performance results, because the fixed benchmark will only test with a cut scene from the game and not with real gaming scenario. The developers from Capcom and Nvidia are promising a lot of pop-out of the screen effects when using 3D Vision, but unfortunately they are not present in the benchmark version of the game, but still even the demo looks very good.

Here are my first results from Resident Evil 5 Benchmark on Phenom II X2 550 and GeForce GTX 275 under Windows 7 x64, taken will all settings to High, without using AA, at resolution 1680×1050. The above result is from 3D Vision enabled on variable benchmark with DirectX 10 – 53.7 fps average. You can try the benchmark and post your specs and results in the comments below…

This is an especially good news for all the 3D Vision users, becuase it seems that Capcom is actually working quite well with Nvidia to release the first actually 3D Stereo optimized game title. Capcom is stating that Resident Evil 5 will take advantage of Nvidia’s new GeForce 3D Vision technology, bringing a whole new dimension of horror to PC Gamers which is something that we are all eagerly waiting to see in action. An interesting thing is that not only the gameplay, but the game should also support Stereoscopic 3D in all of its cut scenes meaning that they wont be pre-rendered movies like in most other titles. And while all the Resident Evil fans are waiting for the final game to come out, there is already a new Stereo 3D tech demo available with benchmark functionality that is available for download. I’ll write more about the benchmark as I’m able to test it personally… ;)

About Resident Evil 5
From the ashes of old conflicts, a new terror arises. The Umbrella Corporation and its crop of lethal viruses have been destroyed and contained. But a new, more dangerous threat has emerged. Years after surviving the events in Raccoon City, Chris Redfield has been fighting the scourge of bio-organic weapons all over the world. Now a member of the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSSA), Chris is sent to Africa to investigate a biological agent that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSSA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the disturbing turn of events. Featuring a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, Resident Evil 5 will let players experience fear together as terror moves out of the shadows and into the light of day…

It seems that the era of 3D in gaming and in movies is coming back again, but then again it never ended… just that it was a bit forgotten and now as the interest is back, only good things should come (probably). There are some good news especially for gamers having 3D Vision or still using anaglyph 3D glasses as new games with official 3D support are coming very soon, so here is some brief information about 4 new titles…

G-Force

The game G-Force is based on the 2009 action comedy film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Walt Disney Pictures in Disney Digital 3-D. The film revolves around a team of trained secret agent animals: guinea pigs Darwin, Juarez, Blaster, mole Speckles, and fly Mooch. The team takes on a mission for the US government to stop evil billionaire Leonard Saber, who plans to destroy the world with household appliances and the game seems to follow the same story. The game G-Force has a 3D option and will come with red and blue (anaglyph) glasses, but if you are not using the built-in 3D mode it should also work with GeForce 3D Vision.

- For more information about the game G-Force…

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is a hand-to-hand action video game being developed by Blitz Arcade and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game tells the story of Han Tao, aka General of a Thousand Victories, who attempts to rescue the Star of Destiny from the foul clutches of the Evil Overlord. As Han Tao, players must fight their way through the Evil Overlord’s throngs, using a number of hyperbolic hand-to-hand combat techniques, ancient weapons, and Zen-powered attacks. The game is expected to be released this summer and it suggests that it will be playable in 3D, with anaglyph and probably shutter glasses like GeForce 3D Vision.

- For more information about the game nvincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao…

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game is an upcoming video game adaptation of James Cameron’s film of the same name (it is not related to Avatar: The Last Airbender!). The title is being developed by Ubisoft and is expected to be available by the end of the year. It was announced by Ubisoft that it will be using the same technology as the film to be displayed in 3D. It seems the game will work very well with GeForce 3D Vision, but there is still not much information available, even the official website is pretty empty.

- For more information about the game James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game…

Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 is a survival horror third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the seventh installment in the Resident Evil survival horror series, where you take control of Chris Redfield and/or Sheva Alomar in a similar fashion to Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 4, with the same over-the-shoulder perspective. The game begins as Chris Redfield is deployed to Kijuju, Africa, to join Sheva Alomar and apprehend Ricardo Irving, who is attempting to sell a bio-organic weapon on the black market. Along the way, they witness a local being fed a parasite, which quickly takes control of his body, turning him into a Majini. From here on, almost all Kijuju locals seen by Chris and Sheva have been turned into Majini… The good thing about Resident Evil 5 is that its Windows version expected later this year (console versions of the game are already out) should be specially optimized for use with GeForce 3D Vision and thus should be able to provide really great 3D effect.
