Sony’s PlayStation 3D Display Will Be Available on November 13th

It seems that the Sony PlayStation 3D monitor will be available starting November 13th (at least in USA) as Amazon is already taking pre-orders for it with the shipping date set for then. Just a reminder, this 3D display will be equipped with HDMI 1.4 interface in order to be used with the PlayStation 3D console for gaming in stereo 3D mode. It will not be officially compatible with Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology, although it may get supported through the 3DTV Play software and also might work with AMD HD3D technology. However you should be aware of the fact that when using HDMI 1.4 for stereo 3D content you are limited to 720p 50/60Hz 3D mode intended for gaming and 1080p 24Hz 3D mode intended for movies.

New Information About Sony’s PlayStation 3D Display (CECH-ZED1)

Sony has made available some additional information about their upcoming 24-inch PlayStation 3D monitor (CECH-ZED1), apparently it will not come in December as the pre-order page at Amazon has suggested, but will instead be available sometime in November. Aside from that Sony has announced that everyone who pre-orders the 3D display until September 30th will not only get the game MotorStorm Apocalypse that is bundled by default, but will also get a copy of the game Resistance 3. Aside from that, Sony has also published the above video of the PlayStation 3D monitor in action with some of it features explained and demonstrated, which apart from stereoscopic 3D support over HDMI 1.4 interface also supports the SimulView technology allowing two persons to play a game in multiplayer mode and see different images (in 2D).

Sony’s PlayStation 3D Monitor To Be Available on December 31st

The 24-inch Sony PlayStation 3D Monitor (CECH-ZED1) was expected to be released sometime in the Autumn this year with a price of $499.99 USD that also includes a pair of 3D glasses bundled, however it seems the release date has been moved for the holiday season. Amazon has the PlayStation 3D monitor available for pre-order with a release date set for December 31 with the price still at $499.99 USD. Considering how the 3D monitor is named, you can expect it to be designed for use with the PlayStation 3 console and unfortunately it will not be a great choice for PC 3D gamers as it will not feature a DVI or DisplayPort that will allow it to work at 1080p with 120Hz, instead it will be with HDMI 1.4 interface and will be more like a 3D HDTV in that aspect (limited to the HDMI 1.4 stereo 3D specs). Still, the expectations for this product from Sony are very high in terms of quality and performance (very little crosstalk/ghosting in 3D mode), making it more attractive choice for console 3D gamers than what is currently available on the market in terms of compatible 3D monitors (not 3D HDTVs) in a similar price range. But let us wait and see what will Sony provide us with at the end of this year and if it will really be worth waiting for, although if you don’t want to wait, there are already alternatives available that can work with both PC and PS3 in stereoscopic 3D mode.

Sony Will Soon Have a 24-inch PlayStation 3D Monitor (CECH-ZED1)

Can’t say I’m surprised by the fact that Sony is getting back into making smaller displays after being gone for a while from that market and of course their return will be with a PlayStation themed 3D monitor. The 24-inch PlayStation 3D Monitor (CECH-ZED1) is expected to be released sometime in the Autumn this year with a price of $499.99 USD with a pair of 3D glasses bundled and a separate pair of active shutter glasses for it will cost you $69.99 extra (if you live in USA, probably the same amount but in Euro for Europe). The monitor is a Full HD 3D active shutter glasses based solution intended to bring more affordable options for PS3 gamers willing to play in 3D mode as well, but not ready to go for a big and more expensive 3D HDTV. The PlayStation 3D Monitor is going to be using HDMI 1.4 (or 1.4a more likely), but aside from support for the frame packaging method, it will also support Side by Side and Top/Bottom (Above/Below) input methods for 3D content, making it more flexible. And thanks to this extra support you may be even able to connect your Xbox 360 console to the 3D display and play in 3D with the games that support stereoscopic 3D output natively, or use another 3D-capable consumer device. The display may be able to work with PC in 3D mode as well, but due to the limitations of the HDMI standard you will not be able to play in 1080p 3D mode with 60Hz per eye. The new active shutter 3D glasses CECH-ZEG1 are going to be rechargeable over USB, weight about 45 grams, and offer about 30 hours of gameplay on a single charge.

More interesting with this 3D display and the new 3D active glasses is the fact that you will be able to take advantage of the screen sharing technology that was patented by Sony a while ago and that I’ve mentioned here on the blog. This means that in specific games supporting multi-player mode you would be able to play with another person simultaneously without having to resort to split screen anymore, each of the players will be able to see a Full HD image and will not be seeing what the other player is doing. This of course would require both players to wear the active shutter glasses, as in this mode instead of showing you 3D image (different views for the left and right eye), the glasses are separating the image shown to the different players and you will see the same 3D image in both eyes. To take advantage of this additional mode however it seems that the game needs to have support for it built in and not all multi-player games will work out of the box with it, so maybe it will be supported on new titles that are yet yo become available. And I’m not yet sure if this first implementation will also feature separate audio for both players, but since Sony does not mention such feature at all, it is more likely that we are not going to see that implemented as a feature in this product.

It is interesting to note that the LCD panel will be a VA type and not TN as currently all of the active 3D LCD solutions on the market rely on the cheaper TN panels due to their faster response time. And using VA type of LCD panel with good enough response time would mean better color reproduction and wider viewing angles. Sony did not mention anything regarding the brightness of the display so far, but if this 3D monitor offers a quality and performance similar to that of the 3D LCD panel the company uses in their VAIO 3D lineup of laptops, then it will be a great 3D product. The only thing that feels a bit weird about this upcoming 3D display from Sony is the design, maybe still not final, but making a monitor look like a big PlayStation just for the sake of saying it is a PlayStation product…

PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.20 to Add 3D Video Output Support?

It seems that Sony is planing to include the much anticipated 3D support for their PlayStation 3 console in the upcoming firmware update version 3.20. Or at least there are such hints coming from from some leaked pictures of the 3.20 firmware that seems to be already in the hands of some developers. The current firmware version for PlayStation 3 is at 3.15 with still no official release date of the anticipated version 3.20, but it is expected this to happen before the official summer release of the first 3D-ready HDTVs from Sony. Prior to having a compatible 3D-ready high-refresh rate HDTV, along with the required active shutter glasses (the preferred tech for all upcoming 3D TVs) there is no point in having this feature available on the console. Also, it seems that the much anticipated Blu-ray 3D support for the PS3 console will require an additional firmware update that is supposed to be available at a later time, after the summer release of the firmware with 3D gaming capabilities, but most likely before the end of the year.
