By the end of November all PlayStation 3 users will be able to play 51 game titles in stereo 3D mode with 48 titles supporting stereoscopic 3D gameplay already available at this very moment. Some of these S3D-capable games are only available as a downloadable content from PSN, others you may get on a Blu-ray media. And while the number of titles supporting stereo 3D mode on PS3 may still be much smaller than the total number of games playable in stereo 3D mode on PC, all of the games for the console give you good stereoscopic 3D support (although some may further reduce graphic detail in stereo 3D mode on the PS3). Here is a list of all the stereo 3D game titles available for the PS3 console:

 1. Auditorium *

* Indicates it is a downloadable PSN title only

The PlayStation video store is also already offering a good 3D selection of movies, although there is still to be desired, however you should not forget the fact that the PS3 console can also play just fine Blu-ray 3D movies (there are quite a lot BD 3D movies already available with more being released quite often). The list of 3D movies available on the PlayStation video store:

Apparently Sony has serious plans for pushing more stereoscopic 3D content to the PlayStation 3 consoles this year and we are not talking about games with support for stereo 3D, but movies as well. On the PlayStation blog Sony has shared the above inforgraphic showing some interesting information about the notable 3D content coming in 2011 to the PS3. By the end of 2011 there should be nearly 30 stereo 3D-capable games available with some major sequels such as Uncharted 3, Socom 4 and Killzone 3. And apparently more and more people are adopting 3D-capable HDTVs as the information that 20% of the Killzone 3 single player demo downloads were in 3D hints. Of course just 20% isn’t that big of a number, but then again you should also take into account the fact that the number of PlayStation 3 users is much, much higher as compared to the ones that already have a 3D HDTV. Another interesting thing is the number of downloads of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3-D Experience Exclusive Sneak Peek has generated, 83 thousand in one week… again not that big of a number, but apparently Sony thinks it is a good one. Aside from the Blu-ray 3D movie playback that the PS3 supports, Sony is also going to be pushing more downloadable stereo 3D content over the PlayStation Network this year…

Acer is the first company that already has a 3D-capable LCD monitor with support for stereo 3D over HDMI 1.4a and this is the model Acer HS244HQ (it uses only HDMI) and will have two more models that will have stereo 3D support over both Dual-Link DVI and HDMI 1.4a – the Acer GN245HQ and Acer HN274H. This for a lot of people automatically means that they would be able to replace the need of a 3D HDTV with one of these 3D LCD monitors, but this is not entirely true. You should be for example able to connect any 3D-capable device that outputs stereo 3D content using the frame packaging method defined in the HDMI 1.4(a) specification such as a PlayStation 3 console. But you will not be able to use an Xbox 360 console in 3D mode with games that do have native stereoscopic 3D support with the reason for that being the fact that the Xbox 360 can output stereo 3D in various formats, but not in the frame packaged format. Usually the Xbox 360 uses Side by Side output and that is something that you can manually switch from a 3D HDTV, but not from the any of the mentioned above monitors as the do no have built-in support for any of these additional modes. So again, a word of warning when you are planning what to buy – a 3D HDTV or a 3D-capable monitor with support for HDMI 1.4a, based on what you are going to use it for…

I’m sure that there are quite a lot of people that are eagerly anticipating the release of the Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) driving simulator for the PlayStation 3 console and are having very high expectations from the game. And with the release date tomorrow, 24th of November for Europe and North America and 25th for Japan and Australia that waiting is almost over, but the big question is if the game will really live up to all the expectations. And while I’m not much of a console gamer, but having played earlier games from the series at some point in time, am wondering more about something else that comes with the new GT5 and that is the stereo 3D support that the game will offer as an additional feature. However it is not very encouraging that Sony is not talking a lot about the stereo 3D support in the game before its release, it is just mentioned as some additional feature present in the game and that is it. But since Sony still doesn’t have a lot of games that support stereo 3D mode and the already available ones are far from being a top titles that can drive people to buy a 3D HDTV, because they want to get the best possible experience, I’m still having high hopes for the GT5…

Now, I still haven’t seen the game or tried the stereo 3D mode in it, but I’ll try it out after the official launch, however I already have a few reports from people that were able to get an early feel of the game and the 3D support. And their comments were not very positive, raging from the more moderate that the game is not impressive at all in stereo 3D mode, to the fact that the game is not working properly in S3D and not very well designed to take advantage of the stereo 3D mode. These things of course need to be verified and you are welcome to share your own experience with the game in 3D mode below, but I’m starting to get the feeling that Sony has rushed the game and the developers did not have enough time to fully implement the stereo 3D support and make the game look and feel great when played on a 3D HDTV. So I suppose that GT5 will not be a reason enough for me to actually buy a PS3 console just yet, to be able to play and test games in stereo 3D on it too and I’ll continue waiting for the killer 3D game for the PS3 to be released, but lets wait a bit more and see for sure.

If I’m getting the right premonition here it would mean that the PC will still remain the best platform to play games in stereo 3D for a quite a while which is a good news for all PC gamers out there that are going to upgrade to stereoscopic 3D capable hardware. The not so good thing here is that without having “the Avatar” of 3D gaming available yet, things with the adoption of 3D HDTVs are a general technology will not pick up the pace due to the general lack of 3D content, besides games of course. And another thing that I’m not too happy about is the fact that game developers are developing games for consoles and then just do a quick and crappy port of the game for PC users. And these ports don’t take advantage of the latest generation of graphic capabilities available on the PC, are not optimized for best performance, come with maximum frame limits, lack important features and good enough user control in terms of the settings, don’t have properly implemented controls and so on and so on. Two recent examples are the Call of Duty: Black Ops and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2010 that could’ve been much better from the start if they were optimized and properly ported to PC, instead of us having to wait for patches and updates that might not even come out.

Today is an interesting “updates day” for everyone into stereo 3D as Sony has officially released a new version 3.50 firmware for all PlayStation 3 users that brings the much anticipated Blu-ray 3D support to the game console. This is actually the second 3D related firmware update that Sony is releasing after the addition of stereoscopic 3D gaming support in firmware 3.30, so the PS3 is now more functional and can not only be used to play games in stereo 3D mode (still just a few titles), but can also replace the need for a standalone Blu-ray 3D player. So go and update your console to firmware 3.50 if you still haven’t done so, you should however be aware that there are some limitations to what features the PS3 supports in terms of Blu-ray 3D movies…

Limitations on Blu-ray 3D disc playback

- The 3D display of some elements such as menus and subtitles may be different on the PS3 system than on other 3D playback devices (appear in 2D instead of 3D).
- Depending on the content, some BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java) features such as BONUSVIEW and BD-Live may not play in 3D or may not function properly on the PS3 system.
- When Dolby TrueHD is selected as the audio format, audio will be output in Dolby Digital during playback of Blu-ray 3D content.
- When DTS-HD is selected as the audio format, audio will be output in DTS during playback of Blu-ray 3D content.

On a side note, as I get a lot of questions if any of the 3D DLP projectors can be used together with a PS3 console to output games or movies in stereo 3D, the answer to this question is NO. The reason for that is due to the fact that the PS3′s S3D support relies on the stereoscopic 3D specifications defined in the HDMI 1.4 standard, so the output from the console is based on the frame packing format at 60Hz defined in that standard and on the other hand the format used by 3D DLP projectors is frame sequential at 120Hz. So unless somebody releases an adapter box that converts from one to the other format or builds a 3D DLP projector with such capabilities you will not be able to use your PlayStation 3 for stereoscopic 3D output. This means that you will be either sticking to Sony’s 3D Bravia HDTVs or actually any other brand that has 3D-capable HDTVs using HDMI 1.4(a) as input format for 3D video content input. An alternative would be a 3D DLP HDTV from Mitsubishi and/or maybe Samsung along with a special adapters that are already available that will convert the frame packed content coming from the PS3 to the DLP checkerboard format used by these TVs. So PS3 in stereo 3D and a 3D projectors are still a no go!

By now you should know that the PS3 console already got its firmware update (3.30) that dded support for 3D output to the console (for gaming in stereo 3D) and not so long time ago even a few “3D demo” games appeared for people that already have a 3D HDTV to connect their PlayStation 3 console to. But Sony’s plans do not end with providing 3D gaming support for the console, they seem to have plans to further extend the stereo 3D capabilities of the console a lot in the next 12 months with the help of more firmware updates…

Later this year we are expecting the second in line firmware upgrade for the console that should add the anticipated support for playing back Blu-ray 3D movies on the PS3 (available as early as September), so if you already have the console and a 3D HDTV then you might skip the purchase of a dedicated Blu-ray 3D player and wait for the new firmware. There are still not a lot of Blu-ray 3D movies available, so purchasing a dedicated hardware player can be easily postponed for a few months anyway, and if you’ve got the PS3 you can even skip that purchase.

It seems that Sony is already planning to have 3D content broadcasted through its PlayTV service as well. And support for the 3D Sweep Panorama pictures taken with some of the Sony digital cameras (MPO files) is also coming, as well as support for user created stereoscopic 3D photos and videos apparently. YouTube 3D content playback in stereo 3D on the PlayStation 3 is another feature that is expected to be available.

So things sure seem to be moving the right way in terms of S3D support for Sony and the PS3, but you should be aware that most of these features are already available for almost any PC equipped with some sort of stereo 3D setup able to play 3D content. And the best of all is that on the PC you can go with a much cheaper 3D-capable monitor as compared to the 3D HDTVs currently available on the market… ;)

Good news coming from EA about the upcoming First Person Shooter Crysis 2 that is expected to be available by the end of the year. During a press conference at E3 Expo Electronic Arts has announced that the game will support Stereoscopic 3D mode not only on the PC, but also in its console version available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and this probably means native S3D support built-in the game engine, as Xbox 360 still does not offer any official Stereo 3D support on console level, unlike the PS3 and PC. Unfortinately still not a lot of details are being disclosed, but we’ll probably get more details with the game nearing its official release date that still hasn’t been announced yet…

“At Crytek, we always strive to raise the technology bar. As the 3D revolution sweeps movies and television, we are excited to bring Crysis 2 to 3D, making it the first big action game to be available in true stereoscopic 3D,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “The 3D experience represents a quantum leap in interactive entertainment. With all of the same story and action seen in the 2D version of the game, the 3D version adds another dimension of intensity and immersion to the action.”

Whether played in 3D or standard 2D, Crysis 2 drops players into a devastated New York in the midst of an attack by a frightening alien species. The alien enemies are armed with deadly weaponry and exceptional sensory abilities that test players’ skill and push them to the limit. These terrifying invaders stalk the streets of New York, leaving the streets in chaos and the skyline in flaming ruin. Surrounded by catastrophic destruction, players harness the superhuman abilities of the Nanosuit to level the playing field, becoming the ultimate weapon on a mission to save New York.

Now, considering the fact that first Crysis games was one of the most demanding titles for your hardware when it was first released, so we can expect to get the same from Crysis 2 too, especially when played in stereo 3D mode. And when talking about that I’m referencing the PC version of the game, as with the console versions it will most likely be a bit stripped down from advanced graphical effects and features in order to be able to provide good performance even in stereo 3D mode. So you better start thinking about upgrading your PCs CPU and GPU from now if they are not yet up to date… ;)

Sony has announced on their blog a little more information about their upcoming new System Software Update version 3.30 for the PlayStation 3 console that is supposed to be available shortly. And one of the announced new features in the blog post is the much anticipated stereoscopic 3D support for the console that will allow you to play games in S3D mode. Sony does not announce an exact date when will the update be released, but it does say it should be available in time for the Bravia 3D HDTVs official release so this means this summer for sure. Have in mind that at first the update will include stereoscopic 3D support only for gaming, it seems that we’ll have to wait a bit more before getting stereo 3D support for playing back Blu-ray 3D movies on the console. This second update is expected to be available later this year and maybe it can happen for example in the 3.40 system software release, but nothing is sure as of this moment, so you should hold on a bit longer for the 3D movies part.

Now, back to the 3D gaming part – the first new games that are expected to come with stereo 3D support for the PS3 console are Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and Motorstorm Pacific Rift. They will probably be available as free downloadable demos along with full versions, that you can purchase, with both of the releases supporting stereoscopic 3D mode. Unfortunately there will not be an option to convert in real-time all the already available games for the PS3 into stereo 3D, or at least at first it will not be possible (wondering why?). Recently I was at a demonstration of a prototype of a Sony Bravia 3D TV (HX800) and saw some stereoscopic 3D videos demonstrating the gameplay of the above 3 titles and I was very impressed, especially with Wipeout HD. Unfortunately there were only videos of gameplay from the mentioned games, but there was also some other stereoscopic 3D videos, including a preview of the upcoming Blu-ray 3D release of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I can say that the preview of the movie in 3D was quite nice, but was not so impressive as some of the other videos that Sony has shown such as 3D footage from football (soccer) matches and especially the 3D videos shot in the Asahiyama Zoo (the most popular zoo in Japan). So I’m already eagerly awaiting for Sony to have their stereo 3D hardware and most of all content for it, as the company can provide a lot in-house produced 3D content. And as you already know at this moment the lack of 3D content is one of the most serious issues for the early adopters of the 3D HDTVs that some brands already have available on the market and others are preparing to launch soon.

With the first wave of new 3D-ready hardware getting ready to hit us anytime now a lot of people seem to have doubts if they should get to be first in the line or wait until the summer to see how will things work out with more hardware available. One of the major concerns people are currently having is regarding HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.4 specifications and should they wait more to get hardware supporting the new specs or go for the first available devices that all seem to have 1.3 hardware. For example the new C7000 line of Samsung 3D-ready HDTVs or the new Blu-ray 3D players from Sony that seem to have HDMI 1.3 support. We know that HDMI 1.3 can be used to transport stereo 3D content, but since there is not standardization for it everyone can have different approach that will offer support for hardware coming from just one brand. In HDMI 1.4 specifications the stereoscopic 3D support has been standardized meaning that all hardware using it should be able to communicate with each other so you will not have to stick just to one brand of hardware producer to ensure compatibility…

This brings me to the case of PlayStation 3 console with HDMI 1.3 that is expected to receive a software update to bring stereoscopic 3D support. We’ve already got confirmation that the software update for the console will add support for the S3D features from HDMI 1.4 specifications as this is possible to be done with just a software update. Of course adding all the new features introduced with 1.4 specifications of HDMI is not possible with just a simple software update, but in the case of stereoscopic 3D support it can be done so that the different brands of 3D-ready TVs should be able to understand that the console is sending them 3D content and display it accordingly. That is of course if these new TV sets use HDMI 1.4 or at least also have their software updated so that the HDMI 1.3 hardware will be able to “understand” the Stereoscopic 3D part of 1.4 specifications. So this brings things back to new 3D-ready hardware being equipped with HDMI 1.3 specifications, which means that these can be using the older specifications hardware, but with software that can accept and interpret S3D content coming from HDMI 1.4 or other updated 1.3 devices. However don’t mistake that all of the new 3D-ready hardware will follow the path that Sony did decide on for the PlayStation 3 console to make it stereo 3D compatible with just a firmware update. It is possible that some hardware producers will stick to normal HDMI 1.3 specifications and use some other sort of processing for the S3D content, something that is still Ok, but will limit general compatibility with other hardware from other brands. So in the end it will not hurt to be extra careful if you want to be one of the earliest adopters of the new line of 3D compatible hardware as this might as well turn out to be quite an expensive experiment for you.

It seems that Sony is constantly working on creating a full ecosystem of stereoscopic 3D-ready products and it will not just provide us with a new range of 3D-ready TVs (BRAVIA LX900 series) and the software update to add S3D support to their PlayStation 3 cConsole, there will be much more. The Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc Player, announced at CES, for example will be the first of the company’s devices capable of playing 3D Blu-ray Disc movies with no firmware upgrade. It should be available in March with a price of about $250 USD and Amazon is already taking pre-orders with a release date announced as March 9th. If you are looking for a new more affordable Blu-ray 3D Disc Player, you’ll have another choice with Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray Disc Player which will be ready to play Blu-ray 3D Disc movies on a 3D enabled TV after a firmware upgrade. This one is also expected in March with a price of about $200 USD and again it is already available for pre-order at Amazon with an expected release date of March 16th. Completing the “3D picture”, the range of Sony Home Cinema products recently announced at CES including the BDV-E370, BDV-E870, BDV-E970W, BDV-F500 and BDV-F700 will all also offer 3D-ready status, but they will require firmware update for the Blu-ray 3D support. With all that said, you should also not forget that the first Blu-ray 3D movie titles are not going to hit the market anytime before summer along with the compatible 3D TVs from Sony and other brands, so you should consider if you want to be prepared with a 3D-compatible player early…
