The Oculus Rift pre-orders are now open with price of $59900!!! USD per unit, probably a mistake as somebody forgot the dot before the zeroes with actual price of $599 for the device (hopefully it will be fixed shortly). The kit includes the Rift headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, Xbox One Controller, EVE: Valkyrie, and Lucky’s Tale and the expected ship date is March 2016, the end of the month starting on March 28th. The price is a bit higher than I have anticipated, but it was expected that it will be more than the two dev kits released already, also because of the hardware upgrade to dual OLED screens. Even at $599 USD probably there will be a lot of early adopters, however probably not as much as if the device was $499 or even $399 USD, prices, that would have made it much more attractive to a wider audience. You should also not forget the fact that Oculus Rift has pretty high demands for the CPU and especially the GPU in your computer in order to provide a pleasant experience with high enough framerate. So the initial target, aside from VR enthusiasts, would be more serious gamers and hardware enthusiasts with high-end systems for whom the higher price tag will not matter that much.
Update: Somebody at Oculus must have realized the mistake and the price is now properly written as $599.00 USD instead of the initial shocking number saying $59900 USD (without the dot separating the cents).

Some great news from Oculus just came in, they announced that pre-orders for the new consumer Oculus Rift will start tomorrow (January 6th) on the official website, but a price has not yet been announced. The news are even better for all Kickstarter backers, like me, that pledged for a Rift development kit who will be getting a free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift. No word on what will be different with this edition, but it will also include, just like all Rift pre-orders, a bundled copy of Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie. There is however a bit of not so good news for some at there also is a mention of “in one of the 20 countries Rift is launching in”…
It seems that the consumer version of Oculus Rift will be available initially only for people living in the following countries with more apparently to come later on: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan.
For additional details you should check Oculus.com tomorrow when the pre-orders for the new Consumer version of the Oculus Rift are opened – 8 am Pacific Time on January 6th.
