GoPro has released two new accessories for their portable action cameras the GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote are now available for users willing to further extend the capabilities of their GoPro HD HERO and HD HERO2. The GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac attaches to the back of your GoPro camera and should enable you to get live video remote control, preview and playback using an upcoming (this summer) free GoPro App on your smartphone or tablet (Android and iOS devices will be supported). And the Wi-Fi BacPac should soon also allow you to transfer wirelessly photos and videos from your GoPro as well as to do live streaming from the camera. And when you combine the Wi-Fi BacPac with the GoPro Wi-Fi Remote you should be able to wirelessly control multiple cameras (maximum 50) from a distance of up to 600 feet (180 meters). You get full camera control including on/off and the camera display gets mirrored on the screen of the Wi-Fi Remote.
For the moment the GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote are intended to be used to control only a single camera at a time, although you can switch between multiple cameras. This however opens new and interesting possibilities if the functionality gets extended to support multiple cameras at the same time allowing stereo 3D video recording and live preview of 3D footage from two cameras. Unfortunately for the moment I don’t see a way to combine a GoPro 3D HERO with the Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote combo and that might be the easiest way to get the advantages of the new Wi-Fi accessory with the 3D recording capabilities. But we’ll have to wait and see how things develop as for the moment the Wi-Fi BacPac’s functionality is still quite limited anyway, so if you are considering getting the accessory, you better get directly the GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac + Wi-Fi Remote Combo Kit currently available for $99 USD.
