More and more sports events are getting the 3D treatment and there were just some news that the Australian Channel Nine TV network will be broadcasting the first 3D sports event in Australia (thanks to Philip Heggie for reporting that). They’ll be broadcasting in 3D the first of the three 2010 State of Origin Rugby League games on May 26th, namely the Queensland vs New South Wales (NSW) rugby match. It is interesting to note that the Australian government has temporary given the network an extra broadcasting spectrum for the event, welcoming the initiative, and it will be a terrestrial TV broadcast over the air, and not on cable. Of course in order to be able to watch it in 3D you’ll have to have a compatible 3D-ready TV set and so far the only ones available on the Australian market are the Samsung C7000 series. Sony and Panasonic may also have their 3D-ready HDTVs available on time for the event as they are expected in June, but that is still not clear yet. The 3D broadcast will be in HD 1080i resolution according to the HDMI 1.4 3D specs. The game will be covered by special 3D rigs consisting of two cameras each and there should be at least a few of these in different places along the stadium to cover the whole game, besides the normal 2D cameras that will also be there for the normal broadcast of the event. Unfortunately no news about online broadcast, so the event will kind of remain limited to Australia, but hopefully someone will make a recording and share it with the rest of the world…

Here is a new German amateur 3D short film called “Der Schatten der Gerechtigkeit” (The Shadow of Justice), probably the first German amateur short film shot in stereoscopic 3D. The movie is in German, but the version below is with embedded English subtitles in 3D, so that you’ll understand the dialogues (other versions are also available). The production was done with a custom side-by-side camera rig using Canon HV30 and HV20 HD cameras, because these cameras were already available, along with the rest of the equipment, so it was basically a no-budget production. For the post production a Zalman 3D Monitor was used and Acer H5360 3D projector for previewing the material in stereoscopic 3D, all the editing was done in Adobe Premiere Pro and the compositing in Adobe After Effects.

The length of the movie is 13:31 minutes and it is available in HD quality (1280×720) in Over/Under format with the left frame first best viewed with 3D Vision Video Player or Stereoscopic Player, but any other 3D setup should do. The movie is also available in anaglyph format, on Youtube 3D and in 2D version, but only the Over/Under version linked below has English subtitles, the rest are all available only in German for the moment. The end result is great, especially considering we are talking about an amateur short movie and not a professional production, but then again it also took over 8 months to prepare everything you’ll see in the video.

If you ever considered getting a 22-inch Stereoscopic 3D monitor from IZ3D, now may be the right time to do that in the holiday season as the company just announced that it is lowering the price to $349. Furthermore you can take advantage of additional 20% discount of this price (only if ordering through IZ3D’s webshop!) and thus purchasing the 22″ Iz3D display for just about $291. The only thing you need to do is when checking out to write the following promo code: 91927c7d and you should be all set. And if you ask why IZ3D and not GeForce 3D Vision, the answer is quite simple actually… IZ3D’s display and drivers work on any kind of video card (ATI-based video card for instance) and not only on Nvidia, unlike the 3D Vision driver that requires you to have an Nvidia-based VGA. And of course the 22-inch IZ3D display does not use active shutter glasses and a 120Hz display, but instead relies on dual screens (inside one monitor) with different polarization and passive polarized glasses in order to achieve the Stereoscopic 3D effect. And of course this technology also has its pros and cons, but if you wanted to get one of these and save some money now should be the right time to take advantage of the discount offer.

Nvidia has just released a new beta 3D Vision Driver Full CD v1.15 that combines GeForce GPU driver version 195.39 and NVIDIA 3D Vision driver version 195.39 BETA drivers available for Windows Vista and Windows 7, 32-bit and 64-bit. One of the most interesting features in this driver release is the addition of three new 3D Vision officially compatible DLP projectors from Acer and these are: Acer X1130P, Acer X1261 and Acer H5360. The official compatibility and being listed as supported by the drivers means that yo should not have problems running the projectors for playing games, watching movies and looking through pictures in stereoscopic 3D mode. This is very important, because if the projectors are not officially compatible (like with the new BenQs that should be technologically compatible, but not issue free) you may have trouble setting them up to be used with GeForce 3D Vision!

Aside from the new DLP projectors support (the new ViewSonic models are still not officially supported too!), the new 3D Vision driver version 195.39 also updates some game profiles and of course some new profiles for games that that came out recently or are going to be released soon, so that the compatibility when playing them in S3D mode is ensured.

Updated 3D Vision game profiles
- Call of Juarez – DX10 smoke fixed
- Civilization 4 – convergence fixed
- Command and Conquer – Red Alert 3 – water rendering fix
- F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate – fixed fire rendering
- Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising – rendering halo fix

New 3D Vision game profiles
- ArmA II
- Borderlands
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Fallen Earth
- FIFA Soccer 10
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Lego Indiana Jones 2
- Mini Ninjas
- Order of War
- Red Faction: Guerrilla
- Section 8
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes
- War Leaders: Clash of Nations

Fly Me to the Moon is a kids story about three flies that went aboard the Apollo 11 flight to the moon along with the first human astronauts that was first released beginning in 2008, but did not get that much attention. It is still aired in some countries in 3D cinemas, including the one I live in and although quite a bit hard to find, thanks to a guy in Nvidia’s forums we now have a stereoscopic 3D version of the trailer fro the movie. The movie comes in animated 3D and in stereoscopic 3D and although it is rated for kids of 3+ years it is still fun to watch even by adults, especially the ones that are interested in S3D and now with “the right” trailer you can get a nice feel on what to expect from the movie right on your PC equipped with GeForce 3D Vision or some other Stereo 3D viewing setup…

The trailer is in 720p (1280×720 resolution) with the two frames not in the typical Side by Side format, but in Over/Under format. So when viewing with NVIDIA’s Stereoscopic 3D Video Player you need to select the Left image on top and the right at the bottom for optimum results. And please share your experience if you watch the trailer and on what S3D system are you doing it…

ViewSonic’s PJD6211 DLP Projector is the most affordable new model coming form the company that can work at 120Hz refresh rate and thus is officially 3D Vision compatible, which is a great news to all the current and future owners of Nvidia’s shutter glasses. This projector has a native resolution of 1024×768 and can provide you with a much bigger screen (especially compare to the 22-inch 120Hz LCD displays) to play games on, watch movies or view pictures in stereoscopic 3D and it does it quite well. Today I’ve finally got the projector, installed it and did some quick tests with it to see how good is the implementation and support for 3D vision and of course the projector in overall…

The installation and usage of the projector is pretty simple, but of course there are some issues that need some attention and getting used to, but once you do that you should be Ok with the product. I started with trying to use a long cheap VGA cable and I had trouble with setting up 120Hz which kind of surprised me, but I believe that the problem was something with the cable, because after switching to the shorter one that comes with the device there were no problems. Of course I’ve used a DVI to DSUB converter, because the videocard had only DVI outputs (Nvidia GeForce GTX 275), but there were no problems using the analog lines of the DVI interface for that.

So after quickly setting up the projector I went to the 3D Vision wizard to activate it with the projector, and here you need to select a generic CRT display in order to have things started. One thing that surprised me quite a bit was the fact that on the step, where you have to select which one of the two objects you see in each eye – triangle or hexagon figure, they were displayed just the opposite from what you should see. So I had to select hexagon where I actually saw a triangle for that eye and the opposite for the other to continue after this step, otherwise I just got the answers “wrong”, but after that there were nor problems with the 3D mode. Here I’ve tried the “3D invert” function, which supposedly had to invert the left and right frame contents, but it did not help… then again even activating or deactivating the “3D sync” option in the projector menu there was no visible difference and I could use without problems 120Hz with S3D in both modes. The documentation of the projector is not very detailed on these two options, but we’ll probably have to wait for a firmware update with some fixes and improvements, but as I said that is not a problem if you know about the issue and the workaround… ;)

I started with some well known games that work good and look very nice on the 120Hz LCD displays to have something to compare them and the results you get on the projector. Tomb Raider Anniversary and Underworld do look very nice as expected and much more fun to play when you don’t have to look like “through a small windows” which is actually your 22″ monitor. Counter Strike Source for instance did look better than on LCD display, but not that much… the game just is not great on 3D Vision, but still… Batman – Arkham Asylum Demo also looked very good on the projector, but with Prototype I had some issues with the character starting to be visible double even with the glasses if I increased the depth level a bit more than the lowest setting, and with the lowest setting it was Ok.

In other games like X-Blades that works very good on 120Hz LCD I had some strange issues, like the yellow and red coloring of some objects that you see on the picture, something that should not be present there. But then again that seemed to be some sort of weird bug, because later on I tried the game on another PC and there it was looking normal, without the strange colors problem, so who knows. Actually on that picture more interesting is the strange colored line of the bottom of the projected screen, as you probably guess it should not be there and it is not a part of the game’s visuals. I did notice this strange colored line appearing form time to time in different applications, so it is probably some sort of bug again, but it is definitely something that should not be there at all…

While setting up the projector I did notice that changing between the refresh rates does also bring some change in the brightness levels of the projected images. This is why I’ve decided to actually measure the brightness levels at 60Hz and 120Hz and got quite interesting results:
- sRGB mode: 60Hz – 457 lux, 120 Hz – 328 lux (~ 39% drop in brightness)
- PC mode: 60 Hz – 956 lux, 120 Hz – 461 lux (~ 107% drop in brightness)

So the higher the brightness level is in 60Hz mode, the more it drops when switching to 120Hz. Of course these results are measured in the center of a completely white projected image at 3 meter distance from the projector, and your results may differ in different conditions, but the change in brightness level in percents will probably remain pretty much the same in relation between 60 and 120 hertz modes. Visually the difference in sRGB mode (I prefer this one) is not that noticeable, but in PC mode it is much more apparent to the naked eye (when switching between the modes). However I did not find this to be an actual problem when playing in a dark room, probably it might be an issue if you try to play in S3D in s too lit up room, resulting in objects in darker areas not that clearly visible. Stay tuned for more things I find while testing the PJD6211 DLP Projector… ;)

On by now you should know the Batman: Arkham Asylum game demo is out and that it is quite good, besides the PhysX support (I’ve already talked about it) and being 3D Vision ready, and my personal expectations are quite high for the final game when it comes out in September (15th for USA, 18th for Europe). Of course the console owners will get it earlier, but they won’t have PhysX or an option to play in Stereo 3D, so the little delay is greatly compensated, especially for owners of GeForce 3D Vision kits. But now back to the game demo and what I found out about it after devoting a few hours for it today… first of all it is quite short, but still gives you a good materiel to get you want to actually buy and play the full game when it is available.

You should be aware that the game is quite heavy, especially of you want to get it to play in higher resolution, with high detail level, including PhysX and on top of that with Stereo 3D enabled by using Geforce 3D Vision. Here are the recommended settings for high end systems and the ones that I actually used on a Dual Core AMD Phenom II X550 @ 3,1 GHz, GeForce GTX 275, 4 GB RAM and Windows 7 RC 64-bit version. The only option that is disabled are the Dynamic Shadows, something that Nvidia recommends for this game, although I did not get bad results even with it enabled, on the other hand even with all additional effects such as Bloom disabled I still did not see much difference on how the games looks in Stereo 3D. And the truth is that by default, without having to mess with any settings Batman: Arkham Asylum Demo looks and works quite nice with 3D Vision, hence being advertised as 3D Vision-ready game. Although my experience showed that a bit of playing with convergence can work very positively on improving the results you get when actually having a perception of great depth in the game…

Now I’ve prepared a short guide on how to improve the depth perception of the Batman: Arkham Asylum Demo and this should probably also work on the final game when it comes out. First of all you should enable the advanced keyboard shortcuts for 3D Vision if you still haven’t done so – these are needed for convergence adjustment to be available. Then you can run the game, and after the first battle with bad Joker underlings you can begin adjusting the convergence to reach a better level of depth, so basically you will be using CTRL + F6 for convergence increase and then CTRL + F7 to save the personal preferences for the game so that next time when you run it ti will load the convergence level you’ve set. What you need to do now is to remove your 3D Vision glasses and look directly at the screen seeing the double image on it, this makes it easier to adjust the convergence. Then when you are standing up (actually Batman is standing up in the game) and viewing your character up close you should press CTRL + F6 to increase the convergence to a level where the top of his pointy ears (Ok the outfit’s pointy ears) become a single image and not a double one as they are looking normally without wearing the shutter glasses. This is a bit hard, because by default when you press CTRL your character crouches down and you need the ears adjusted in standing position of Batman as in the image above, but you can do it right with a few tries. And this is it… now you should be able to enjoy the game better and with more depth than by default, and just in case I’ve also included two Reg files in an archive so that you can skip the guide part above and just import them in your registry to get the convergence level preset when you run the game.

So what are the results from customizing the convergence level you may ask? Normally the game looks nice, but you cannot use it with more than 5%-15% depth level, otherwise you start noticing ghosting around your character and other objects. Not to mention that by default the game looks quite flat and not being able to increase the depth level without having a bit of ghosting doesn’t help with that. But after readjusting the level of convergence you can easily increase the depth level a lot more and there should be much less ghosting – I was able to play at up to 50% with great level of depth. Still going over 50-60% depth level might be problematic, because I’ve notices that if you increase the depth level too much the details gets blurrier and there is some strange flickering-like thing in some objects. Anyway, after readjusting the convergence you should be getting better results even when using lower depth level like the default percentage compared to what you will be getting with the default profiles. Still I should repeat myself, that even the default game profile presents you with nice results… it is just that it looks a bit flat for my personal taste in S3D… ;)

On June 15th ViewSonic has announced three new 3D-ready DLP projectors that are suitable solution to be combined with Nvidia’s GeForce 3D Vision shutter glasses instead of a 120 Hz LCD display or a compatible TV screen. The first two “normal” DLP projectors – PJD6211 and PJD6221 should’ve been available in July according to Viewsonic, but looking around for them in the last few days proved that they are still not on sale. And PJD6381 – also a 3D-ready, but an ultra short-throw DLP projector (unlike the other two cheaper models that are a normal-throw ones) should be available in August, again according to the official information from Viewsonic’s press release…

But according to some new information I just got from Viewsonic (thanks to Twitter) the new 3D-compatible PJD6211 DLP projector will be available in 1-2 weeks (by the middle of August), the PJD6221 and PJD6381 will be available in late August. So if you are looking to get any of these new 3D-ready DLP projectors for your 3D Vision setup you should start preparing for it, because I’m really eager to get a Viewsonic PJD6211 to it try out and compare the big screen and smaller resolution (1024×768) with high resolution (1680×1050), but small in diagonal Samsung 2233RZ display (22-inch)…

Viewsonic PJD6211 – 1024×768 – $849 (middle of August)
Viewsonic PJD6221 – 1024×768, network management – $999 (end of August)
Viewsonic PJD6381 – 1024×768, short throw, network management – $1,249 (end of August)

This is an especially good news for all the 3D Vision users, becuase it seems that Capcom is actually working quite well with Nvidia to release the first actually 3D Stereo optimized game title. Capcom is stating that Resident Evil 5 will take advantage of Nvidia’s new GeForce 3D Vision technology, bringing a whole new dimension of horror to PC Gamers which is something that we are all eagerly waiting to see in action. An interesting thing is that not only the gameplay, but the game should also support Stereoscopic 3D in all of its cut scenes meaning that they wont be pre-rendered movies like in most other titles. And while all the Resident Evil fans are waiting for the final game to come out, there is already a new Stereo 3D tech demo available with benchmark functionality that is available for download. I’ll write more about the benchmark as I’m able to test it personally… ;)

About Resident Evil 5
From the ashes of old conflicts, a new terror arises. The Umbrella Corporation and its crop of lethal viruses have been destroyed and contained. But a new, more dangerous threat has emerged. Years after surviving the events in Raccoon City, Chris Redfield has been fighting the scourge of bio-organic weapons all over the world. Now a member of the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSSA), Chris is sent to Africa to investigate a biological agent that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSSA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the disturbing turn of events. Featuring a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, Resident Evil 5 will let players experience fear together as terror moves out of the shadows and into the light of day…

It seems that the era of 3D in gaming and in movies is coming back again, but then again it never ended… just that it was a bit forgotten and now as the interest is back, only good things should come (probably). There are some good news especially for gamers having 3D Vision or still using anaglyph 3D glasses as new games with official 3D support are coming very soon, so here is some brief information about 4 new titles…

G-Force

The game G-Force is based on the 2009 action comedy film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Walt Disney Pictures in Disney Digital 3-D. The film revolves around a team of trained secret agent animals: guinea pigs Darwin, Juarez, Blaster, mole Speckles, and fly Mooch. The team takes on a mission for the US government to stop evil billionaire Leonard Saber, who plans to destroy the world with household appliances and the game seems to follow the same story. The game G-Force has a 3D option and will come with red and blue (anaglyph) glasses, but if you are not using the built-in 3D mode it should also work with GeForce 3D Vision.

- For more information about the game G-Force…

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is a hand-to-hand action video game being developed by Blitz Arcade and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game tells the story of Han Tao, aka General of a Thousand Victories, who attempts to rescue the Star of Destiny from the foul clutches of the Evil Overlord. As Han Tao, players must fight their way through the Evil Overlord’s throngs, using a number of hyperbolic hand-to-hand combat techniques, ancient weapons, and Zen-powered attacks. The game is expected to be released this summer and it suggests that it will be playable in 3D, with anaglyph and probably shutter glasses like GeForce 3D Vision.

- For more information about the game nvincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao…

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game is an upcoming video game adaptation of James Cameron’s film of the same name (it is not related to Avatar: The Last Airbender!). The title is being developed by Ubisoft and is expected to be available by the end of the year. It was announced by Ubisoft that it will be using the same technology as the film to be displayed in 3D. It seems the game will work very well with GeForce 3D Vision, but there is still not much information available, even the official website is pretty empty.

- For more information about the game James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game…

Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 is a survival horror third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the seventh installment in the Resident Evil survival horror series, where you take control of Chris Redfield and/or Sheva Alomar in a similar fashion to Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 4, with the same over-the-shoulder perspective. The game begins as Chris Redfield is deployed to Kijuju, Africa, to join Sheva Alomar and apprehend Ricardo Irving, who is attempting to sell a bio-organic weapon on the black market. Along the way, they witness a local being fed a parasite, which quickly takes control of his body, turning him into a Majini. From here on, almost all Kijuju locals seen by Chris and Sheva have been turned into Majini… The good thing about Resident Evil 5 is that its Windows version expected later this year (console versions of the game are already out) should be specially optimized for use with GeForce 3D Vision and thus should be able to provide really great 3D effect.
