The demo of the Game Colin McRae: Dirt 2 is out in the wild and I was eager to try it out with 3D Vision (way more than to see some DX 11 effects!), but I was a bit disappointed from the first results. No profile for the game is present in the 3D Vision drivers for the moment and the convergence level is totally messed up by default. There are also some other weird things that I’ve found out in the game when running in Stereoscopic 3D mode, that I’ll mention in a minute…

When setting up the game you should change the Shadow option to Ultra Low in order to minimize some weird effects you might otherwise see around some moving objects, caused of course by their shadows not being rendered correctly in stereoscopic 3D mode. Of course if it does not bother you much you can still play with High settings for the Shadows so do try it yourself to see which one is Ok for you. Unfortunately that does not fix all the possible issues that you might notice when playing the game with your 3D Vision setup in S3D mode…

You should stay away from the Multisampling option (AA) as if you enable some additional filtering you’ll also start seeing some weird dark lines on your car as reflections, without AA enabled they are not present. So stay away from that, although it might make the game look better without you loosing too much frames as Dirt 2 seems to be not that heavy for the GPU although it does look quite nice in terms of graphics and effects. It is a shame that you should sacrifice some of them to make the game look better in stereoscopic 3D…

Something interesting that is worth mentioning is that all the in-game menus are in 3D, which is nice, but also creates an issue for correctly playing back the game in both the menu and the races. The menus are closer to you without objects far from your reach and in the races you have both very close and very far objects which is making it hard to use just a single convergence/depth profile for them, but it is not impossible. So download and try the profile I’ve made with my custom settings and share your thoughts about it…

In my custom profile I’ve tried to have a bit of a pop-out effect, but not too much and of course to have more noticeable depth on the objects that are closer to you like your car for instance and of course the different things in the menus. The custom convergence profile is made to be used with lowest depth setting in the menu and in the game, but while driving your car you can also try increasing the depth level a bit if you wish to experiment. Note that the custom convergence settings I provide are made for the demo of the game, but they should also work on the final version for PC when it is available.
