Stereo 3D Covered at FMX 2010 in Germany and GDC Canada 2010

April 30th, 2010 · No Comments · Stereo 3D Events

FMX 2010 will be taking place next week between May 04 and May 07 in Stutgart, Germany. The FMX Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Interactive Media is a European conference on the creation, production and distribution of digital entertainment and interactive visualization in design, industry and research taking place each year. And this year (15th in a row) stereo 3D will be among the more important topics at the conference, so if you are visiting FMX you should not miss the interesting panels about S3D there.

Tuesday and Wednesday next week at FMX will be focused on 3D in movies, there will be a screening of the movie Alice in Wonderland (shot in 2D and converted in 3D). There will be panels about the shooting of 3D video and about the conversion of 2D content to 3D. And Thursday and Friday are probably going to be the more interesting as the panels then will be targeted at gaming in 3D. Neil Schneider, President & CEO of MTBS and Executive Director of The S-3D Gaming Alliance will be talking about the quality expectation needs of consumers and measurable ways that S-3D games can be tested and reviewed by media and customer alike. He will showcase the new M3GA initiative and share some other ideas that are currently being worked out. Andrew Oliver, Co-Founder and CTO of Blitz Games Studios, will talk about stereoscopic 3D console gaming. Blitz is one of the largest independent game developers in the world who has just celebrated their 20th anniversary. Most recently, they have earned their due as being the first game developer to put out a console title on XBOX 360 and PS3 that supports modern stereoscopic 3D solutions (Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao). Thursday will finish with Samuel Gateau, a member of the Content & Technology Engineering group at NVIDIA. Over the course of two hours, Sam will detail the required techniques for game developers to get the best results out of NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D Vision solution. On Friday Jens Schöbel, Technical Designer for Crytek will talk about their game engine’s use of stereoscopic 3D…

But if you are in Canada, then next week is also going to be interesting for you as GDC Canada 2010 will be taking place in Vancouver on May 6-7th. The Game Developers Conference Canada is a forum for Canadian developers to share best practices for fostering excellence and quality games within their region and distributed globally. And although not so focused on stereo 3D, there are still going to be some interesting panels covering that aspect of gaming, so you may consider visiting them.

Habib Zargarpour, Creative Director for Microsoft Game Studios, and advisory board member for The S-3D Gaming Alliance will have a 1 hour panel called “Stereo-3D Gaming: What Are We Waiting For?” on Thursday. And on Friday you should not miss the 1 hour session with David Coombes (SCEA) and Anton Mikhailov (SCEA) titled “Stereoscopic 3D for the PlayStation3 and Introducing PlayStation Move Motion Controller” that will explain the Stereoscopic 3D strategy taken by Sony Computer Entertainment.

It is Almost Time for the 3D Gaming Summit to Start, So Get Prepared

April 15th, 2010 · No Comments · Stereo 3D Events

3D Gaming Summit is the first conference that is nearly 100% dedicated to stereoscopic 3D gaming that will be taking place at the Hilton Los Angeles in Universal City on April 21st and 22nd (yes, that is next week!). Featuring top partners including NVIDIA, Sony, The S-3D Gaming Alliance, RealD, and more, it is a critical conference for all working in this industry or planning to start working in it as it is just starting to gain a momentum. Among the headline speakers for the 3D Gaming Summit are Mark Rein, Co-Founder of Epic Games, Jon Landau, Producer of Avatar, Alan Price, Studio CTO for Electronic Arts Canada, Jesse Stern, Writer of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and many more. So if you have the chance to go there you should not miss it and then be sorry later on…

“The video game industry needs to appreciate the business opportunity that this conference represents. Game developers that partner up with content-hungry display makers will benefit from customer awareness, competitive technology, and great gaming experiences. Customers need gaming content for their new 3D HDTVs… so who will have games to sell? Stay in the loop, be prepared, go to the conference,” said Neil Schneider, Executive Director of the non-profit S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA).

As a part of the 3D Gaming Summit there will also be a meeting for the S3DGA members that will be held at 5PM on April 22nd. Have in mind that a 3D Gaming Summit registration is not required for S3DGA meeting attendance. S3DGA meeting speakers include Electronic Arts, Blitz Games Studios, Jon Peddie Research, and more. This will be a private members-only meeting due to limited space. Subject to S3DGA management approval, additional game developers and first time guests are welcome with some condition however.

The S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA)

Now this is something new that I’ve just learned about and it seems that actually the S3DGA was formed quite recently too, so that is why I haven’t heard of it yet, but probably the same goes for you too, so here is a bit more information about the The S-3D Gaming Alliance.

According to the U-DECIDE Initiative, a well received study of modern gamers, 93% of survey respondents want to see game developers support stereoscopic 3D technology. The industry’s answer is to start development of The S-3D Gaming Alliance, an organization that is 100% focused on making stereoscopic 3D gaming possible through standards, education, and product adoption.

The S-3D Gaming Alliance or S3DGA in short, is a 3D gaming and entertainment industry standards and advocacy group charted to accelerate the adoption of 3D gaming and display technology by providing for standards discussions, consumer promotion, education, and awareness. Membership in the alliance is comprised of organizations and individuals with an interest in developing 3D solutions.

Some of S3DGA’s founding companies include Blitz Games Studios, DDD, iZ3D, Jon Peddie Research, TDVision Corp, XpanD, and more. The President and CEO of S3DGA will be Neil Schneider, best known for his pioneering work on Meant to be Seen, the world’s leading website focused on stereoscopic 3D gaming and entertainment.

High immersion S-3D gaming experiences include explosions that pop out of the screen and a sense of depth so real that players think they can place their hands inside the display. S-3D technology is growing popular in the home with products like LCD shutter glasses, 3D monitors, and several new and developing 3D HDTV and projection solutions.

The effect of a standards group such as S3DGA is to accelerate the adoption of technology by presenting a forum for members to express, test, and agree on ideas and approaches to educating consumers. And I should add that we definitely needed an organization like that to help push things a bit more in the field of Stereoscopic 3D gaming, so that more and more people and companies will start taking interest in it… ;)
