The game Mass Effect 3 should start rolling in the US today and will be available in the rest of the world in the next few days and unfortunately it will apparently not be great when played in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision as hinted by the demo released a while ago. The good news for the stereo 3D gamers out there is that the community is already quite ahead in resolving the issues that the game has in stereo 3D mode and there is already a fix addressing most of the problems that the demo had (it is based on the demo version). The fixes are based on the DirectX 9 wrapper developed by Helix and he is also taking an active part in modifying literally hundreds of shaders in the game for proper stereo 3D rendering. Of course when the full game is released there will probably be a need for more things to be modified, but most of the work is probably done already. So download the 3D Vision fix while waiting for the full game to become available and if you find any other issues, please make a savegame and share it with information about the issue, so that additional fixes could be added. This way we might be able to get the Mass Effect 3 to a 3D vision-ready state not from the developer, but thanks to the efforts of the stereo 3D gaming community.

<br /Nvidia has provided a temporary solution for the owners of the Viewsonic PJD6531w 3D DLP projectors and 3D Vision running into problems when setting up 3D mode using the 3D Vision wizard.Have in ind that what they’ve published is just a temporary workaround until a fix is made available (probably with the release of the next driver update). The step by stem guide available as a knowledgebase article will give you directions for configuring the Viewsonic PJD6531w with the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses and it is available here: I am having trouble setting up the ViewSonic PJD 6531w using CD v1.29 (v257.21)?

The cause of the bug is that the software is choosing the optimal mode reported by the projector which in case of the Viewsonic PJD6531w is 1280×800. However, the projector needs to run at 1280×720 rezolution @ 120Hz and thus the wizard will report an error. Nvidia is hoping to have a fix for that issue ready by the next 3D Vision driver update and meanwhile if you already bought Viewsonic PJD6531w projector, then you can use the temporary workaround for the time being…

Bad Company 2 used to have a bug, where the name tags (and associated icons) were rendered way off from the character they belong to when playing the game in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision, but now that issue is fixed. This problem was more apparent in the Multiplayer mode of the game as in Singleplayer you don’t see many name tags anyway. You can see what I’m talking about in the video above, to get an idea of the annoying nature of the problem when trying to play with name tags moved away like that…

The latest Battlefield: Bad Company 2 patch (version 529843) which was released on April 21st has the name tags display fixed and you should normally have that automatically installed, but if you skipped the update and you play the game in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision then now you have a good point in updating it. BFBC2 has an auto-update mechanism and forces all the Multiplayer users to update to the latest patch, but it seems that a lot of people that play the game mostly in Singleplayer might not have applied the patch and thus can still have the issue. And you are more than welcome to share your thoughts in the comments below how the latest patch works for you in stereo 3D mode…

And if you still don’t have the game, because it did not yet perform good enough for you in stereo 3D mode when using 3D Vision, then now you don’t have an excuse anymore even for that, so you can go and get it. The current price for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 at Amazon is $43.51 USD. Not to mention that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is also one of the game titles that works very well with a 3D Vision Surround setup as we’ve seen in all the 3D Vision Surround demonstrations going on around lately (plays very well on 3 displays). And the new driver release version 256, that will give us 3D Vision Surround as a feature is just around the corner and should very soon be available to everyone with two Fermi-based GTX 470 or GTX 480 or even GT200-based SLI configurations.

Yesterday the game Aliens vs Predator was officially released and it has turned out that the full game has the same issue that was available in the multiplayer demo released over Steam earlier this month. The executable name of the game is the same as an old AvP game that already has a profile in the 3D Vision drivers, but this profile messes things up and most people believe that the game does not work with 3D Vision. If you purchased the full game you will notice that it also has another executable for DirectX 11 and this seems to create issues for 3D Vision not willing to activate when you run the game even on DX10 hardware. So it seems that the fix for the demo version of the game does not work anymore and there are a bit more things you need to do in order to make 3D Vision working. You need to rename both AvP.exe and AvP_DX11.exe executables by adding an additional x at the end of their names so they’ll become AvPx.exe and AvP_DX11x.exe and then extract the replacement launchers from this archive (the two exe and ini files) and then run the game again and try enabling 3D Vision. Do not try launching the game directly from the exe, try running it through the Steam client…

With the above workaround in action you’ll be able to play the game with 3D Vision, but you’ll quickly notice that the new AvP game is not perfect in stereoscopic 3D mode. The crosshair is still being rendered in 2D and there are issues with the lights and shadows, not to mention that the default 3D Vision settings do not provide the best S3D experience. You cannot fix that by yourself, but at least you can lower the negative impact so the game will be looking better and more problem free in stereo 3D mode. The only thing you need to set from the Video Options inside the game is to set to Low the Shadow Complexity (or disable it completely) which will get rid of the weird rendering of the shadows. There is no option do disable the crosshair or to fix the issues with the lights so you’ll have to bear with these if you want to play the game in S3D mode… or at least wait for a patch.

By now you should be very well aware that the new AvP game is definitely not a 3D Vision optimized title having issues even in the profile detection… there should’ve been a fix in the 3D Vision profile detection from Nvidia, especially when the same issue was found in the earlier released demo. For the rest of the problems we might or might not see an update for the game that will provide better stereoscopic 3D compatibility. Meanwhile you can try out my custom convergence settings for the game that have the convergence point set at the tip of the gun, for an example stereo 3D screenshot with them applied click on the image above. Just have in mind that the profile is set to be loaded with a game executable renamed to avp.exe and will not load with the executable being renamed to something else! After importing the custom convergence settings set the starting depth level to 15% and then you can increase or decrease it to best fit your preferences, but just don’t go too high. And as usual please leave your comment on how this has worked for you in the comments below if you’ve tried it…

The Multiplayer Demo of scheduled for February 16th release game Aliens vs Predator has been released yesterday over Steam and a lot of people (including myself) tried to play it with 3D Vision. It turned out however that the 3D Vision drivers contain a profile for an older AvP game and load it and that results in totally messing up the image on the screen when you turn on the stereoscopic 3D mode. Turns out that the convergence level is the thing that totally messes up the image on the screen, but even after lowering the convergence with the help of CTRL + F5 key combination the game is not in a true stereo 3D mode…

So I had to figure a way out to fix that by preventing the wrong game profile to be loaded from the 3D Vision driver and this was not as easy as to just rename the AvP.exe file from the Steam directory as this prevents the game from actually being run. So the solution I’ve found is to rename the actual game executable from AvP.exe to AvPx.exe and then add a small launcher that is named AvP.exe that is just calling up the renamed actual game executable file and that did the trick. The 3D Vision drivers no longer detect the game and load the old profile so things look normal, although you might still want to play with settings in order to get best results in S3D mode. To make it easier I’ve packaged the launcher I’m using (Bart’s program launcher 1.2) into a small archive so that after renaming the the original Exe of the game you can just extract the files from the archive below and then just run the game with everything working fine with 3D Vision.
