Ok, we know that movie studios are totally ignoring all the millions of people that already have 3D HDTVs, 3D-equipped PCs, or event 3D-capable smartphones by not officially releasing stereoscopic 3D trailers for upcoming 3D movies online (with still very few exceptions). It seems that most of them don’t care about bringing these people in the cinema by showing them a glimpse at the 3D experience they have prepared for them in the movie theater, but at the same time they want to convince them to go and see a 3D movie by showing them a 2D trailer of that movie. Many 3D enthusiasts and 3D professionals are still wondering what is the stupid reason behind all of this and there could be a lot of these, some more reasonable, others not that much. For example the fact that a traditional 2D trailer with a lot of short and fast cuts does not work that well in stereo 3D, or that you need to find the right person for making a good 3D trailer, or the extra cost for making such a promotional material, or simply because you have crappy stereo 3D effects and want to cheat more people to go into the movie theater and get disappointed by the 3D effects they see. Who knows what it is exactly.

But why the hell you need to make only a 2D video trailer for an old blockbuster movie that you are going to be re-releasing converted in stereoscopic 3D? I mean you’ve seen the movie in 2D already, the whole movie and whether you liked it or not, there is no new footage in 2D that you can actually see in the “new trailer” and that video footage to make you go and see the converted to 3D version. Like in the case of the embedded official trailed for the Titanic in 3D that is coming on April 6th 2012, they could’ve just present the last part of the video with the text saying that Titanic is returning on April 6. But then again would millions of people watch an official trailer with just some text saying something that they’ve already read about, well the “new” 2D trailer for Titanic in 3D is here and millions have watched it already. But only talking about the movie in 3D even if it is by James Cameron himself probably won’t convince people that are not that big fans of the movie to go and watch it, for the movie fans however, 3D or not 3D they will surely watch it yet again, even probably multiple times. And one more thing, the original 2D version of the movie Titanic was a bit over 3 hours long (194 minutes to be exact) and going to see a 2D to 3D conversion that is over three hours might be a bit of a challenge for a lot of people. Watching a 3D movie like Avatar that is almost three hours long is one thing, but watching a converted to 3D movie like Titanic would be for over 3 hours, can turn out to be a big problem for a lot of people that are still fairly new to 3D and you can expect a lot of these… and if the 3D conversion is not at its best, then who knows.

Anyway, back on the 3D trailers thing. The problem is that it is not just one hit movie like Titanic, others are doing the same by pushing out “new” 2D trailers that contain no clue or information, let alone a glimpse of the experience that awaits the viewers when they go to the movie theaters to see the 3D conversion. And with all the negative media coverage that 3D conversions are still getting (some crappy ones fully deserve it) it may be quite hard to convince people that are not sure if they want to go and watch the new 3D return of a movie they liked a lot in 2D some years ago. Of course releasing a 3D trailer could be a double edged knife, because if you’ve done a crappy job with the 3D conversion or even with the trailer in 3D you can actually drive away viewers instead to attract their attention. So are movie studios too afraid not to mes up, or it is all about the money and they don’t care about the viewers as long as the numbers are satisfactory in the end… what do you think?

The classic book “The Theory of Stereoscopic Transmission and its application to the motion picture” by Raymond and Nigel Spottiswoode with illustrations by Brian Borthwick, originally published in 1953, but out-of-print for many years, is now available in electronic format and for free for everyone willing to read it. This book is the latest addition to the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference Virtual Library, and joins several other pioneering but hard to obtain texts in the field of stereoscopic imaging. By converting classic publications into electronic editions, the SD&A aims to make these volumes easily accessible to stereoscopic researchers once again.

“The Theory of Stereoscopic Transmission” provides a theoretical analysis of the three-dimensional geometry of capture and presentation of stereoscopic images as typified by 3D movies, so it is definetly an interesting read as the 3D basics are still the same as they were may years ago. Titles of chapters in the book include: Stereoscopic Depth Range, The Stereoscopic Window, Stereoscopic Calculators, Cameras with Variable Separation and Convergence, Projection, The Human Factor in Stereoscopic Transmission, and much more. An errata list is provided at the end of the book. Also included is an 8 page anaglyph 3D insert “Stereoscopic Diagrams” by Brian Borthwick and Jack Coote which illustrates some of the concepts in the book in 3D.

In the last few days there has been a lot of controversy going on around the fact that Sony has announced that it plans to stop subsidizing the 3D glasses in movie theaters starting next year with the release of the movies “Men in Black III” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.” This has angered the National Association of Theater Owners in US that did not accept these news happily, and this was not the first try for big movie studio to stop subsidizing the glasses. It has happened with 20th Century Fox back in 2009, but they have renounced their plan to stop subsidizing the 3D glasses after the same thing happened as is now happening with Sony. Will Sony do the same as 20th Century Fox is still not clear, but it is clear that unless this happens as an industry wide move the movie theater owners won’t be happy at all. But you know, there are already quite a few placer around the world where movie studios are actually not subsidizing the 3D glasses. This can easily be arranged adjusting the profit distribution shares between the movie theater owners and the movie studios, however movie studios like Sony probably just want to move the cost for the 3D glasses to the theater owners. And this all could lead to a 3D ticket price increase or a decrease in the number of 3D movie projections, but it could also lead to a big market increase in one relatively new category of products – personal movie theater 3D glasses…

Buying and bringing your own personal (BYO) 3D glasses with you when going to a 3D movie projection is already something that quite a few people prefer doing, especially considering some of the side effects of the reusable 3D glasses you usually get in the theater. The reusable 3D glasses in movie theaters are usually being washed in between projections in order to have them cleaned, but how many times you’ve seen the lenses of these glasses scratched or smudged with some cleaning fluid or whatever? You usually have to carefully wipe them out yourself before using them, that is unless you carry your own personal pair of 3D glasses that you can take out and enjoy the movie. There are also some movie theaters that hand out what appears to be packed single-use pairs of glasses that get proper treatment before being repacked and distributed for the next projection… this is usually a better and more problem free solution for the audience, but is probably also more expensive. But you know, getting 3D glasses for a 3D movie projection is something you’d normally expect to get as a service from the movie theater, so should you also not expect to get a discount from the ticket when you BYO 3D glasses? This is one of the options and movie theaters could also start offering different brands of compatible 3D glasses with the type of projection system they are using. And this way they can even further increase their profit by offering different types of personal 3D glasses and in different price ranges, so that you will know when you spent some money for a personal pair of glasses you would then get a discount from the 3D movie tickets.

Having movie theaters offering different personal 3D glasses is probably the best way, especially considering the fact that there are multiple 3D projection systems in use that require the viewer to wear a different type of 3D glasses to see the proper image. These are mostly passive solutions – IMAX, RealD and Dolby 3D as well as some active ones such as XpanD, which is probably the most widely used active solution for 3D movie theaters. Obviously active and passive 3D viewing methods are not compatible, although you may be able to make a kind of an universal solution, but even the different passive solutions are not compatible with each other due to the different method of light polarization being used in each. When you look around you will see that pretty much all better looking and especially designer 3D glasses available are compatible with RealD’s projection system only. Sure you could pretty easily also find IMAX or Dolby 3D glasses, but these are usually the same not so practical and not so good looking type of 3D glasses that you get handed out when you enter the respective 3D movie theater. The IMAX 3D glasses shouldn’t be expensive and hard to produce, but most likely IMAX is not giving out license to anyone else to make designer 3D glasses compatible with their solutions, the same could also apply to Dolby 3D, although their glasses should be a bit more expensive and harder to produce due to the way their lenses work. This would of course need to change if the market of personal 3D glasses continues to grow and there is a big potential for that, although the presence of multiple formats makes it harder for the users. Depending on what format the local movie theaters around you use you may need to buy multiple different pairs of 3D glasses and if you go for more expensive designer brands such as Calvin Klein or Oakley it could turn out to be quite an expensive thing to do. And if you don’t go watching 3D movies that often it becomes even less attractive, even though there are a lot of options for personal 3D glasses that don’t cost over $100 USD…

It is not my first time writing about the lack of stereoscopic 3D versions of movie trailers for 3D movies online, so that everyone with some 3D-capable hardware will be able to get an idea about the stereo 3D effect provided by the movie before going to watch it in 3D. Maybe the reason is connected with that, since if you don’t like the volume effect in the trailer you might just go for the 2D version of the movie or not go and watch it at all, nobody cares if you don’t like the movie when you are already watching it in the theater, you’ve already payed for the ticket anyway. And considering the fact that still most of the 3D movies are 2D to 3D conversions and not shot with 3D cameras this can be somewhat of a concern. But at the same time you are presented with 3D movie trailers of upcoming titles when you go to the movie theater or get a Blu-ray 3D movie, so why not have these available online and reach much wider audience. I mean we already have platforms supporting 3D video streaming such as YouTube 3D that you can take advantage of in promoting the movie essentially for free, as you’d already probably have the 3D trailer ready anyway.

But no, Hollywood is still missing on this opportunity, others movie makers however seem to have noticed the extra potential that publishing not only 2D version of their trailers, but stereo 3D versions can also engage wider audience, especially the constantly growing number of people with some kind of a 3D-capable device. Some Japanese companies are already taking advantage of that opportunity, for example earlier this year one of the first officially published 3D trailer for a movie on YouTube was for “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society 3D” and earlier this month another 3D movie trailer made its premiere on YouTube, one for the computer-animated movie “Tekken: Blood Vengeance (also embedded above). The interesting thing about those two movies is that they are computer generated animation with the first one being more interesting because of combining more traditional hand-drawn style of animation with computer generated cell-shaded graphics while the second is in more realistic style of 3D computer generated graphics. It seems however that animation is seeing some potential in using the stereoscopic 3D format for added benefit and that goes not only for the Japanese anime, but for western style of animation as well.

However it seems that we may still need to wait a bit more for live-action movies to start following this trend as well, especially the ones made in Hollywood. But there is one more important thing in regards to making a stereoscopic 3D trailer for a 3D movie and that is related to the way you usually make a trailer nowadays. When you watch a 2D movie trailer you usually get a lot of fast cuts from different scenes in the movie in order to make the action more dynamic and that usually works very well, but only in 2D. If you apply the same method of using a lot of fact cuts from different scenes with different depth and make that into a stereo 3D trailer, than the end result for the viewer watching it may as well turn to be unpleasant experience. One of the most important things that should not be done in a 3D movie trailer is to have a lot of very short scenes with big difference in the depth level stitched together in the trailer. Because our eyes need some time to readjust for the difference in the depth level in each scene and if you constantly vary the depth a lot each 2-3 seconds, the short 1-2 minute experience after watching the trailer might actually change your mind not to go and watch the movie in a movie theater. Even when the content in the trailer will most likely not always be the true representation of what is happening inside the actual movie, as it will most likely have longer scenes and easier transitions for the eyes of the audience. But still why is nobody in Hollywood even trying to do something about making available the 3D versions of the trailers for 3D movies, even if they are not made perfect right from the start… are they really afraid of loosing more of audience than they could attract this way?

It seems that the San Diego-based 3D film studio PassmoreLab has licensed a number of its latest 3D films to Nvidia for use on the 3DVisionLive.com online 3D community website, making accessible some of the movie studio’s extensive library of 3D video content available online. Of course you will be required to have 3D Vision-equipped desktop or mobile computer in order to be able to watch these movies online. The first seven titles are expected to be available online in April.

The licensing agreement consists of seven titles from PassmoreLab, with more to follow:

- The original 1968 George Romero zombie thriller “Night of the Living Dead, Now in 3D!”
- Ed Wood’s 1959 cult classic “Plan 9 from Outer Space, Now in 3D!”
- The Science documentary “The Extreme Nature of Bats”
- The Science documentary “Microworlds”
- Extreme downhill skateboard racing documentary “DROP 3D: My Life Downhill”
- Extreme snowmobile documentary “S:4 The Product”
- The PassmoreLab original animated short “Holy Moly”

The 3DVisionLive.com website is an online community where users of Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology can enjoy and share a broad range of 3D content on their PCs. It allows them to stream 3D films, trailers, music videos, sport clips, and video shorts, as well as upload, share and view full-resolution 3D photos. Analysts estimate about 75M 3D PCs will be sold per year within five years. (Source: Jon Peddie Research, 75 million PCs in 2014).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present some of the earliest examples of three-dimensional motion pictures in a special event scheduled to take place on September 7th at Linwood Dunn Theater at the 1313 Vine Street in Hollywood, California (USA). The movie screening will start at 7:30 p.m. with Serge Bromberg as a host, an internationally recognized film historian, who will present Lumiere brothers’ early film “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat” and other rarities by Georges Melies, Norman McLaren, Charley Bowers and the Disney Studios in the 3D edition of his “Retour de Flamme (Saved from the Flames)” show which highlights archival rediscoveries and features his own commentary and live piano accompaniment. This will be a great chance to see some of the earliest 3D movies ever made, so definitely a great experience for anyone interested in 3D cinema and hopefully we will see similar events in other parts of the world too.

The following statement by Phil Brown (3D Phil) was intended as a comment to the article: “Hollywood fears the 3D bubble has already burst” by Nick Allen published in The Sunday Telegraph on July 25th…

I am a stereographer and stereoscopic supervisor who is involved in making 3D films for the feature film industry, I am not surprised to read that the figures for visitors choosing to watch a 3D film in 3D are getting less and less, I feel this is wholly due to greedy studio executives trying to jump on the 3D bandwagon by so called converting a 2D film to 3D,

In my opinion this was always going to jeopardize the future of 3D film production, How can you initially show good quality real 3D films that audiences get excited about like “The Polar Express”, “Beowulf” and “Avatar”. These films have a justifiable extra charge for these screenings, but to then charge the same extra cost for low quality 2D to what I call 2.5D conversion that are nowhere near the immersive quality of a properly produced 3D film is a disgrace.

Morally this is wrong and unethical, as the paying customer has no idea that they are not in fact watching a true 3D presentation, but a fake, and so sadly in the case of all these conversions like “Clash of the Titans” these films generally can look like card board cut-outs instead of the rounded forms of a true 3D image, This is bound to be a disappointing experience for the viewer, and so of course they will feel they no longer like 3D. Or even worse that they may feel that the initial wonder they felt when they first saw a 3D film, is not having quite the same effect, they may feel that they have now lost that immersive feeling that proper 3D can give them. Sadly they don’t understand why perhaps this is happening.

Since “The Polar Express” there have been 56 productions made in proper 3D and unfortunately there have been 27 conversions done by computer manipulation. What is real and what is fake? There is a site on the internet that recognizes the problems faced by cinema goers and the new Blu-ray 3D releases, this is realorfake3d.com. People need to have the confidence when spending there hard earned cash that the film there watching at the cinema or buying on a Blu-ray disk is in fact a true 3D film and not a fake.

So why is a film that’s properly photographed in 3D better than a conversion? Well, we see with 2 eyes that provide 3D stereoscopic vision throughout our lives, the 2 lenses of a stereoscopic camera rig recreates this depth perception when projected onto the flat 2D surface of the cinema screen, a 3D image if filmed properly can be a thing of great beauty and become a pleasant and immersive experience without headaches or Nausea. On the other hand a conversion is trying to falsely recreate from the 2D image a second viewpoint to obtain it’s so called 3D, this currently can not be done anywhere near the quality of a proper 3D image created by a 2 lens 3D camera and a professional 3D crew. These converted films have lots of optical errors and these errors can indeed give the viewer a headache and feel nausea.

Damage is being done to the 3D industry due to a lot of inexperienced people making wrong decisions, and uninformed comment by film critics. For to long 3D has been seen as a gimmick or a fad, It’s about time we start treating 3D as the art form that it deserves, don’t forget that in Victorian times 3D stereoscopic viewers were the television of the day for more that 30 years, and Victorians certainly did not consider it a gimmick.

A lot has been said about the extra time and costs that are associated with a 3D film production. Although 3D is more expensive to produce we need to realize that any department on a film set needs time and freedom to do there job in the most creative way they can. Producers would never think of replacing the wonderful lighting and camera shots that are created by the Director of Photography but they are quite willing to short circuit the 3D production process by using these terrible conversions. Most of the delays in 3D production are caused by constantly improving camera rigs and crews that are not properly trained in setting the shot. 3D filming is more than just putting 2 camera lenses side by side and shooting. The stereographer has to consider factors like the distance from lens to the nearest object, then nearest object to the background, the best perspective camera angle to maximize the 3D effect, focusing, camera movement and set design. All have there place in creating that special 3D shot. When I am working on a set, the 3D department is rarely holding up the shoot. Rather, we are mostly waiting for other departments to be ready. So 3D does not have to be slowing down the production. Part of the problem currently faced by producers is that there are not enough 3D crews available, this I am sure has a bearing on the decision process of whether to shoot real 3D or convert.

Sadly with the advent of the 3D ready TVs the same sort of confusion and ignorance is going to plague the purchasers of Blu-ray 3D discs. At the moment the purchaser who visits sites like Amazon are presented with lots of 3D content on Blu-ray, but has little or no idea what are the old anaglyph films which use old school Red/Blue glasses or what are the latest 3D disks that will work on there brand new shiny 3D Ready TV with shutter or Polarized glasses, Sellers need to separate the listings for both types of 3D disks so that customers know what they are buying, and not have to search through each individual title in order to find this vital information. All of this confusion could jeopardize the take up of 3D in the home.

Studios and manufacturers of 3D TVs and Blu-Ray 3D players are also having a bad influence on the future of 3D in the home. 5 TV manufacturers have released fantastic TVs with the latest 3D technology that really works, so what do the film studios do? They release titles that are tied in with certain brands of 3D TV. So for instance “Ice Age 3″ and “Coraline”, 2 great 3D films, are only available if you purchase a Panasonic 3D TV and 3D Blu-ray player. I brought a Samsung 3D TV, so I was able to buy the “Monsters vs. Aliens” disc. I am amazed that with all this new 3D equipment available on the shelves that these industry decision makers are making it very hard for early adopters of this new format to get there hands on 3D content. So we are in the terrible position of being able to currently only have the choice of 2 titles directly of the shelf without them being tied to a certain brand of 3D equipment.

3D in the home can only be driven by readily available content and so it’s madness to restrict it by greedy underhand practices like this. The most successful 3D film so far is “Avatar” currently only available in 2D until a possible 3D release in 2011. This film alone would drive the sale of 3D adoption in the home. But it seems they want to either wait and see what the sales of 3D ready TVs are, or are they thinking about the sales initially of the 2D version with a possible second sale when the 3D version is made available? All of these new Blu-ray 3D disks will play in 2D on a any normal Blu-ray player if you don’t have a 3D ready system. So there is no need for a double 2D/3D release.

With all the above confusion and bad practices in the 3D industry, we need to get everything on a more fair and equitable ground so that we don’t kill 3D before it has a chance to get established. Here’s to common sense.

Toy Story 3 is the finishing part of another trilogy and what to do better than to make the movie in 3D since it is already a computer generated animated movie. The first two movies – Toy Story in 1995 and Toy Story 2 in 1999 were quite good and most of the people liked them, but will the new one be as good as the previous two. If you’ve already watched the movie in 3D you can share your thoughts about it and the stereo 3D implementation and if you still haven’t do you plan to go and see it or not…

Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it’s all for one and one for all as they join Barbie’s counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear to plan their great escape.

Toy Story 3 will be the only new 3D movie for June, but in July we are going to get three new titles, two of which are most likely a 2D to 3D conversions, so I’m not going to get too high expectations about the 3D effects, not the movies themselves. These are The Last Airbender coming on July 2nd and Cats & Dogs 3: The Revenge of Kitty Galore scheduled for July 30th, the third one is a true stereo 3D movie and not a conversion – Despicable Me. And to tell you the truth I do have quite high hopes for Despicable Me to be a really good movie to enjoy as the plot seems quite fun from the trailers I’ve seen so far, but we’ll have to see on July 9th.

If you live in an English-speaking country you probably rarely see subtitles when you go to watch a movie in the cinema, unless the movie is a foreign one of course or some of the characters talk in a foreign language. But if English is not your official language and you are not watching a local movie, but the most recent Hollywood blockbuster title, then you will either see subtitles or in some occasions get the movie audio doubled in your local language. And while doing subtitles for 2D movies is actually not a serious challenge for anyone now (not meaning it is an easy task when it is being done right), when we are talking about a 3D movie that needs subtitles, then you actually have a serious challenge in front of you…

One of the main things when talking about subtitles is the fact that you should be able to read them while watching a movie, but they don’t need to be the center of your attention as otherwise you’ll miss seeing the movie while trying to read the text too hard. The subtitles need to be clear and easy to read, small enough and placed at the right spot in order not to block the action in the movie and of course be on the screen just as little time as needed to be read by the viewers. Now these principles apply to both 2D and 3D subtitles, but actually achieving them with 3D movies is much harder than with 2D ones. You can of course decide to stick to 2D subtitles even for a 3D movie, but this means that the text will be constantly with a depth equal to that of the screen of the cinema where the movies is projected. Now imagine of you get something like a ball for example that is supposed to be jumping out towards you, but part of it is blocked by the text… the result is uncomfortable feeling, because you cannot get the right depth of the elements you see. A similar issue is present if you have to use 2D (at screen depth) subtitles with a scene where you have a lot of depth, but here the problem is different. You may have trouble refocusing your eyes quickly enough between the subtitles in front and the scene on the back and the result is yet again eyestrain and unpleasant feeling that something is not right in that movie. So you need to go for come creative approaches like using 2D subtitles on a black border of the screen with no actual depth, although that has its own issues too, go for 3D subtitles with static depth or a varying depth depending on what is being displayed, or moving the subtitles all around the screen to find the space with less separation and so on and so on…

But instead of me going all over that area from an enthusiast’s point of view, I better direct your attention to an interesting white paper covering that topic that is done by some professionals in the area that is describing the situation in more detail. I’m talking about a UK company called Screen Subtitling Systems that has been around for quite some time on the market for professional subtitling solutions, so you can be sure that in the 16 page white paper called “Subtitling for Stereographic Media” they talk about the topic based on a lot of experience.
