BenQ With New 24-inch 3D-capable Monitors – XL2411Z and XL2420Z

Soon after the announcement of the new 27-inch BenQ XL2720Z 3D-capable monitor, the company has just announced two new 24-inch 3D-capable displays that essentially bring the new features of the larger model to the smaller 24-inch ones. The new BenQ XL2411Z and BenQ XL2420Z will probably replace the older XL2411T and XL2420T/TX series, but the not so good news is that these two new models expected early next year will not feature support for the new Nvidia G-Sync technology. Nvidia has promised us the G-Sync DIY upgrade modules before the end of the year, but we are still not seeing these available, and availability of models with G-Sync support built-in early next year, but it seems things may get delayed a bit. BenQ XL2411Z and XL2420Z are suppose to be available in early 2014 and probably not too long after their release on the market BenQ may also announce new series that are supposed to provide G-Sync support as well as the company is an Nvidia launch partner for the G-Sync technology.

Enough with G-Sync for now, the BenQ XL2720Z and the new smaller BenQ XL2420Z and XL2411Z monitors that will feature 3D Vision support with an external 3D Vision kit (including IR emitter as it is not built in) as well as 3D LightBoost technology. However, apart from the 3D LightBoost support (strobing backlight) these display feature a new Motion Blur Reduction technology developer by BenQ that is supposed to work in a similar way as the 3D Lightboost, however BenQ’s solution will be video card type independent and you will not need to “hack” it to work in 2D mode as well. Other interesting things about the new BenQ Z-series is a the addition of Low Blue Light mode that allows gamers to adjust the blue light levels of the monitor – what is considered to be the major cause of eyestrain when using computers for long periods of time. Another new feature introduced a these monitors is the Gaming-comfort Flicker-free technology that is supposed to eliminate noticeable flickering of the backlight when you lower the brightness level of the monitor (no PWM dimming of the backlight).

BenQ XL2720Z, a New 3D Vision-ready and 144Hz 2D Gaming Monitor

Earlier this month BenQ has announced their new monitor XL2720Z, the first 27-inch gaming monitor that BenQ releases with support for 144Hz refresh rate as their previous model XL2720T was up to 120Hz. BenQ XL2720Z is also 3D Vision ready, though when using it in stereoscopic 3D mode you are being limited to 120Hz (60Hz per eye) like with other 144Hz 3D-capable models. And while the 3D Vision compatibility also comes with 3D LightBoost technology support that can help improving the brightness level in stereo 3D mode and also help reduce motion blur in 2D mode, BenQ has also introduced a new Motion Blur Reduction technology of their own that essentially does what 3D Lightboost does – strobing backlight, but BenQ’s solution does not require “software hacks” to work like you may need to do to enable Nvidia’s 3D Lightboost for motion blur reduction. It will be interesting to see how will BenQ’s blur reduction solution will compare to Nvidia’s 3D Lightboost approach that was originally designed for stereo 3D use. Other interesting things about the BenQ XL2720Z is a new Low Blue Light mode that allows gamers to adjust the blue light levels of the monitor that is considered to be the cause of eyestrain for example when using computers for long periods of time. If you want to be able to use the BenQ XL2720Z for stereoscopic 3D gaming you would need to get a pair of 3D Vision glasses with IR emitter kit, as they are not bundled, and BenQ’s target is probably not stereo 3D gamers, but 2D gamers interested in the higher refresh rate. Unfortunately this monitor does not feature the recently announced G-Sync technology from Nvidia, so if you are looking for a new gaming monitor you might want to wait a bit more for the first G-Sync enabled monitors to come out (probably early next year). BenQ is one of the partners of Nvidia for the G-Sync technology along with Asus, Philips and ViewSonic. By the end of the year Nvidia is supposed to start offering the Nvidia G-SYNC Do-it-yourself upgrade kits for owners of the ASUS VG248QE monitors. So now may not be the best time to go for the BenQ XL2720Z, unless you don’t care about the elimination of screen tearing, input lag, and stutter that Nvidia’s G-Sync technology promises. If your interest is mostly in the new BenQ Motion Blur Reduction technology, then you might also want to check out the EIZO Foris FG2421 gaming monitor that also features similar strobing backlight technology helping eliminate motion blur, but Eizo also has a VA-type LCD and not a TN panel like on this BenQ display.

EIZO Foris FG2421 is a 120Hz VA-type LCD Gaming Monitor

Up until recently all 120Hz+ LCD monitor intended for gaming (regardless if for stereo 3D use or not) were using TN-based LCD panels due to the fact that this technology provides the best results in terms of pixel response and that is something you need if you want to have a higher refresh rate. TN LCD panels may be the fastest in terms of response, however they have other no so good aspects when compared to VA-based and IPS-based panels, but fortunately we now have what seems to be the first gaming oriented 120Hz LCD monitor with a VA-based panel from Eizo (it does not support stereoscopic 3D!). If you are not familiar with the name Eizo it is probably because up until recently the company was focused on professional monitors and it just recently started making monitors targeted at gamers.

EIZO Foris FG2421 is actually is not their first gaming monitor, but is the first one that is able to work at 120Hz refresh rate and as already mentioned it is nt with a TN panel. Eizo markets this monitor as a 240Hz gaming monitor, however this can be a bit misleading if you don’t read the details, in fact it is a 120Hz monitor that has a built-in processing to simulate 240Hz. Eizo calls this function “Turbo 240” and you can enable or disable it from the OSD menu of the monitor, what it does is doubling the frames (not interpolating, but doubling) and strobing the backlight in between them and the end result is a significant reduction in motion blur. This is pretty similar to how the 3D Lightboost technology on more recent 3D Vision-compatible monitors functions, although there is no frame doubling with them. Definitely an interesting thing to see as this Eizo monitor can turn out to be a great alternative to buying a 3D Vision-ready monitor that you may not use in stereo 3D mode at all, especially considering the fact that there are no other 120Hz displays out there that use better LCD panels than TN, so if you are not into 3D and hacking Lightboost to work in 2D mode you might want to check the EIZO Foris FG2421 out. Eizo also promises low input lag (less than 10ms) and no noticeable flickering with reduced brightness by using DC control and high rate PWM (Hi-PWM) control for driving the backlight instead just PWM.
