The 3D Entertainment Summit is an event that is focused on how the 3D entertainment transformation is affecting the business of entertainment, it is the event of choice for the key players in 3D entertainment across theatrical, broadcast, television, gaming, advertising and alternate content. In it’s fourth year, the 3D Entertainment Summit is going to bring thought leaders from around the globe to analyze where 3D has been and more importantly where it is headed. An unfiltered “state-of-the-industry” that affords an in-depth look at how visionaries and luminaries see the future ahead in this rapidly changing marketplace.

This will be the second year for The 3D Gaming Summit, an event focused entirely on 3D gaming, and it will for the first time be held in conjunction with The 4th Annual 3D Entertainment Summit in Hollywood. The 3D Entertainment Summit will run on September 20-22, with a dedicated day to the 3D Gaming Summit (featuring 3D Gaming & Beyond) on September 22nd. The whole event is scheduled to take place on September 20-22, 2011 at the Hollywood & Highland Center, Hollywood, California, USA.

Nintendo has released some financial results that contain some interesting information regarding the sales of their 3D-capable 3DS portable console. For example during the last three months that ended in June 2011 the worldwide sales of the Nintendo 3DS console accounted for 0.71 million units and for the same timeframe Nintendo has sold more than double non-3D portable consoles in the form of Nintendo DS (1.44 million units). The worldwide sales of the bigger Nintendo Wii console were even more with 1.56 million units sold for that quarter, so the 3DS needs to catch up a lot, especially considering the fact that the older products are already available on the market for quite some time.

On the software side, Nintendo has sold 4.53 million games for the 3DS console, as opposed to 12.13 million for the DS and 13.44 million for the Wii console. Of course here the older consoles have the advantage of much larger user base, but it is also up to the number of hit titles available for each console. For example thanks to the game “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D” considered a top game title the number of software sales for the 3DS were just at about 1/3 of the games sold for one of the other platforms which is actually quite good. And in truth Nintendo is blaming the slow hardware sales due to the lack of hit titles for the Nintendo 3DS, which is probably true considering the fact that the interest in 3D is booming and that the 3DS still has no serious competition.

- You can find more details about Nintendo’s financial results in this PDF…

3D Vision Surround is a nice additional feature that you can take advantage of for more immersive stereoscopic 3D gaming if you have an SLI setup or a Dual-GPU video card and three 3D-capable displays – 3D monitors or 3D projectors. In the case of three Full HD 3D monitors you get a wider horizontal working area with a total resolution of 5760×1080, covering your peripheral vision better in games and giving you more working area. It sounds really promising and my impressions from the few demonstrations of the technology, where I’ve seen and tried it with a few games were quite positive, but of course sooner or later I had to make a 3D Vision Surround setup to dou some more extensive testing…

It has turned out quite hard to get three 3D monitors of the same model just for testing, so I invited a friend to bring his own 24-inch Acer GD245HQ and together with the other two monitors I’ve managed to get we started testing multiple games yesterday and it was a long day. Originally I planned to do the testing in 3D Vision Surround mode with the GeForce GTX 590 video card, but do to some hardware trouble with the test system used for the 590, I had to change the idea on the go and move to my test PC with dual GeForce GTX 580s in SLI. I’ve had a big table planned for the three monitor setup, and we barely managed to fit the monitors on it… 3D Vision Surround setups even with 24-inch monitors do need a lot of space for comfortable use, and if you plan to do it with the new 27-inch monitors, you should really have a lot of free space. Other than that the setup and installation was quick, easy and problem free in general, so we moved to the testing phase and sometime early in the morning today we’ve finished with going through about 30 games in 3D Vision Surround. During the testing there were some interesting, unexpected and surprising results, so you should be prepared that not every single game will work problem free, some require a bit of tweaking and a few just don’t work. In general however the experience when everything works out is great and you quickly start to not pay too much attention to the bezels of the screens and get fully immersed in the gaming.

You can expect more photos and the results later on, as now I need some more coffee, to disassemble the test setup and pack the monitors up for returning them. I can say I’m quite happy with the results, although the whole thing was not entirely problem free. But I’m still having a hard time judging which one I like better, a single 50-inch 3D HDTV or a 3D Vision Surround setup with three 24-inch 3D monitors, because both have their advantages and their disadvantages. In the end, I’m going back to my single 3D Full HD monitor for my gaming needs in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision as a preferred choice for now…

And if you are among the first to get your hands on your brand new 3D console, you are welcome to share your feedback and experience with the 3D functionality it offers, things like how the games look like in 3D mode, how well does the 3D strength adjustment slider works, what do you think about the camera etc. I’ll try to get a press sample to do a review of the 3DS, but can’t promise anything as I do not plan to buy the console… don’t have the time to play on it and it will be pretty pointless to buy one just for a review ;)

The new Dragon Age 2 game is coming on 8th of March, but there a demo available already for a few days, so as a somewhat fan of the RPG genre I downloaded it and tried to play it in stereo 3D mode with the help of 3D Vision. The Dragon Age 2 Demo does support both DX9 and DX11, but in the demo version you are not able to play with the highest quality levels as well as probably not having all the quality controls available. Still the game runs quite decent in stereo 3D mode by default, although there is no official 3D Vision profile available for it yet, the default convergence level needs some adjustment in order for the close-up scenes to be Ok. After adjusting the convergence you should still play with lower depth levels in order to avoid excessive crosstalk/ghosting as well as having some of the objects that are far away from you seem doubled, because of higher separation. There are some elements such as the mouse cursor or the unit info bars that render in 2D and some other minor issues, but then again with lower depth levels these shouldn’t be such an issue for most people.

When running in DX11 mode I’ve noticed that the game is pretty heavy even for top hardware when running in stereo 3D mode, you get unacceptable framerate. There are also some occasional shadow corruption on the terrain (black triangles), and this may be somewhat related to the use of DX11 features as it does not happen in DX9 mode. In DX9 the game is comfortable playable in stereo 3D mode, you get decent framerate, so it seems that the DX11 mode in the demo may be somewhat buggy and hopefully in the final game this issue will be resolved.

As I’ve already mentioned a few days ago I started testing the new Intel Sandy Bridge platform for gaming in 2D and stereo 3D mode with the idea to see if the added CPU performance will benefit you with better framerates in games. I’ve used my current 3D test PC based on an Asus P55 Sabertooth motherboard with an Intel Core i5 750 and two GeForce GTX 580 video cards running in SLI to compare it to the newer Asus P67 Sabertooth motherboard together with an Intel Core i5 2500K processor. I’ve ran the same benchmarks on the standard frequencies and then at overclocked frequencies for both processors on the tho platforms.

On the Asus P55 Sabertooth motherboard I’ve ran all the benchmarks with the Intel Core i5 750 processor at both the default frequency of 2.66 GHz and then with about 50% overclock with the quad-core processor running at 4 GHz. The two GTX 580 video cards were running in SLI with their default frequencies, so it was only up to the processor to provide better performance.

The newer Asus P67 Sabertooth motherboard builds on the P55 model that I currently have, still offering very nice set of features and a great overclocking potential for the Sandy Bridge platform. I’ve had the motherboard installed in the test system together with an Intel Core i5 2500K processor with water cooling.

The Intel Core i5 2500K processor is also a quad-core model, running at 3.3 GHz by default (the 3.4 GHz on the screenshot above is due to the Turbo mode) and the goal with that processor was also to get it overclocked with about 50% and that means 5 GHz. I’ve had no trouble getting to 5 GHz, thanks to the good motherboard and the water cooling, although the required voltage is a bit high, the CPU I have is not among the top overclockers, but is still quite good (batch L051).

But now let us see how good is to have a faster processor with some benchmarks, I’m starting with 3DMark 2006 and 3DMark 2011 (11), both are synthetic tests and do not reflect real world usage. But it is still interesting to see how a faster CPU can increase the performance. In 3DMark 2006 the result in points scales quite nice, but this is due to the fact that the test is running at a lower resolution and is more CPU dependent than the newer version 11. In 3DMark 2011 I’ve used the extreme mode that stresses the video car much more and the end result is not that CPU dependent, so the increase in performance is not that big.

Moving to games, the table above shows the results in six different popular games, more demanding titles that also work well in stereo 3D mode. They were run in 1920×1080 resolution, with maximum level of details, 4xAA was enabled in COD: Black Ops, Fallout New Vegas and Left 4 Dead 2, the AAA mode was active in Metro 2033 and 2xAA in Mafia 2 with Just Cause 2 being the only one without AA. As you can see there is nice improvement with a faster CPU, with the new Sandy Bridge platform running at default frequency getting results that are very close to the ones achieved with the overclocked older platform. There is a nice improvement, although not that big when comparing the result with the default frequency of the processors and after that when they are overclocked with 50% higher frequency.

And repeating the same thing as above, but now the games are ran with stereo 3D mode enabled through 3D Vision. Have in mind that the framerate numbers you see in the table above for the stereo 3D mode represent the average number of frames measured per eye, so the actual number of frames rendered are twice as much. Another thing to note is that due to the way the technology works (vsync is enabled) the maximum framerate is 60 fps per eye, so games that get very close to 60 fps will have no noticeable performance increase. So the two games that you should point your attention to in this table of results are the more heavier Call of Duty: Black Ops, Metro 2033 and Just Cause 2 that are rendering much less than 60 fps per eye. Call of Duty: Black Ops and Just Cause 2 do show good improvement with a faster processor speed, however in Metro 2033 the improvement is less apparent. The reason that Metro 2033 is not scaling that well with a faster CPU speed is that the game is relying too much on the video cards using technologies like PhysX and heavier tessellation in DX11 mode.

So what are the conclusions after all of this, simple, the faster the processor – the better, however overclocking your video card(s) can often bring better performance increase than overclocking the processor when talking about gaming. One of the reasons for that is due to the fact that most games still cannot take full advantage of all the cores available in a multi-core processor. So the new Intel Sandy Bridge platform is a good choice for a high-end gaming PC with a powerful video card, or better make them two in SLI, but aside from overclocking the processor you should overclock the video cards as well. Playing games in stereo 3D can benefit from a faster processor and the Sandy Bridge CPUs do handle nice and offer good overclocking potential. The Asus Sabertooth series of motherboards, both for the older and for the newer platform, is also a good choice and my personal favorite… not only because of the way they look, but also because they offer a nice set of features and offer a great overclocking potential and experience. And in a few weeks we should also start seeing the new revised B3 chipset for the Sandy Bridge platform back in motherboards on the market. So it is upgrade time… ;)

Test Drive Unlimited 2 has been out for a few days already and I was able to get it for a quick spin to test how well it will perform in stereoscopic 3D mode when played with 3D Vision. The good news is that there are no serious issues that make the game unplayable in stereo 3D mode, on the contrary the game actually does look quite good by default. With that said I should mention that there is currently no official 3D Vision profile available for TDU2, but the default convergence level is quite Ok and the game can tolerate nicely even 100% depth level for most users. It is interesting that you will not be able to adjust the convergence, so the developer probably disabled that feature in order to ensure better default results, but the game is not being advertised as 3D Vision-ready. Although being able to adjust the convergence could’ve brought more flexibility and better results for some users…

Regarding the not so good things about the game, there are some minor issues with different elements in the menu rendered in 2D mode instead of 3D when you are playing the game in stereo 3D mode. In some modes the crosshair is also rendered in 2D, as well as some in-game elements, and there are also some minor issues with shadow rendering, but they are mostly Ok. Actually most of the things that need some fixing, something that can happen in with future patches for the game, are not when you are driving, but when you are on foot and the game is mostly about driving anyway. Apart from that, the game offers quite nicely detailed and good looking cars, although the environment could’ve been a bit better and more detailed it is Ok. What I did not like is that even at 1920×1080 resolution the game badly needs Anti-aliasing as without it it looks quite ugly due to abundance of jagged edges. Going for the maximum AA of 8x makes things much more pleasant to the eye, although still not perfect, but playing at Full HD with Very High details and 8x AA can be quite demanding for the video card. I’m talking about something like 30-35 fps per eye average framerate with dual GTX 580s in SLI and that means the game can be pretty heavy if you want to push the quality to a good level and play it in stereo 3D mode. You are welcome to share your feedback from playing the game in S3D mode as well…

I’m sure that there are quite a lot of people that are eagerly anticipating the release of the Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) driving simulator for the PlayStation 3 console and are having very high expectations from the game. And with the release date tomorrow, 24th of November for Europe and North America and 25th for Japan and Australia that waiting is almost over, but the big question is if the game will really live up to all the expectations. And while I’m not much of a console gamer, but having played earlier games from the series at some point in time, am wondering more about something else that comes with the new GT5 and that is the stereo 3D support that the game will offer as an additional feature. However it is not very encouraging that Sony is not talking a lot about the stereo 3D support in the game before its release, it is just mentioned as some additional feature present in the game and that is it. But since Sony still doesn’t have a lot of games that support stereo 3D mode and the already available ones are far from being a top titles that can drive people to buy a 3D HDTV, because they want to get the best possible experience, I’m still having high hopes for the GT5…

Now, I still haven’t seen the game or tried the stereo 3D mode in it, but I’ll try it out after the official launch, however I already have a few reports from people that were able to get an early feel of the game and the 3D support. And their comments were not very positive, raging from the more moderate that the game is not impressive at all in stereo 3D mode, to the fact that the game is not working properly in S3D and not very well designed to take advantage of the stereo 3D mode. These things of course need to be verified and you are welcome to share your own experience with the game in 3D mode below, but I’m starting to get the feeling that Sony has rushed the game and the developers did not have enough time to fully implement the stereo 3D support and make the game look and feel great when played on a 3D HDTV. So I suppose that GT5 will not be a reason enough for me to actually buy a PS3 console just yet, to be able to play and test games in stereo 3D on it too and I’ll continue waiting for the killer 3D game for the PS3 to be released, but lets wait a bit more and see for sure.

If I’m getting the right premonition here it would mean that the PC will still remain the best platform to play games in stereo 3D for a quite a while which is a good news for all PC gamers out there that are going to upgrade to stereoscopic 3D capable hardware. The not so good thing here is that without having “the Avatar” of 3D gaming available yet, things with the adoption of 3D HDTVs are a general technology will not pick up the pace due to the general lack of 3D content, besides games of course. And another thing that I’m not too happy about is the fact that game developers are developing games for consoles and then just do a quick and crappy port of the game for PC users. And these ports don’t take advantage of the latest generation of graphic capabilities available on the PC, are not optimized for best performance, come with maximum frame limits, lack important features and good enough user control in terms of the settings, don’t have properly implemented controls and so on and so on. Two recent examples are the Call of Duty: Black Ops and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2010 that could’ve been much better from the start if they were optimized and properly ported to PC, instead of us having to wait for patches and updates that might not even come out.

AMD is talking stereo 3D again and their stereoscopic 3D support, based on the open stereoscopic 3D initiative they’ve announced a while ago, and now they have given it a name – it is called AMD HD3D Technology. The list of supported hardware includes all the Radeon HD 5000 and the two new announcements from the HD 6000 series, although apparently only the new Radeon HD 6850 and 6870 support GPU-accelerated Blu-ray 3D playback. Still, considering the fact that AMD is dependent on their partners like DDD and iZ3D for the actual software that creates the stereoscopic 3D output from games, you can use even older hardware with most of the supported 3D viewing solutions. However if you want to take advantage of the new active shutter glasses and a 120Hz LCD monitor, then you should have one of the newer video cards that also have built-in driver level support in order to ensure good synchronization with the shutter glasses.

On their website AMD is still not giving out a lot of information, but they do have a big list of supported 3D HDTVs, 3D DLP projectors, as well as a few of the first solutions that do utilize an AMD GPU, along with stereoscopic 3D support and shutter glasses. These we already know of, but just to mention them again: the new HP Envy 17 with 5850, the MSI Wind Top AE2420 AIO PC with 5730, and the new Viewsonic V3D241wm-LED monitor. Of course there are a few other solutions that do not use active shutter glasses already available that can be used with AMD GPUs and these are the iZ3D display, Zalman’s Trimon passively polarized monitors, some laptops with passive polarization from Acer and Lenovo and quite a few other commercial or custom built products that can be used to provide stereoscopic 3D support.

One important thing again related to the new Radeon HD 6850/6870 GPUs is the fact that they do come with DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a connectors that both do support stereoscopic 3D output. Of course we are yet to see some 120Hz LCD monitors that do use DisplayPort, however the availability of HDMI 1.4a ensures compatibility with all the 3D-capable consumer hardware such as 3D HDTVs already available and the upcoming 3D home cinema projectors with the same interface. So the new GPUs do have support for HDMI 1.4a and the frame packing specifications used for stereo 3D content distribution over the interface, however you still need to have something to provide the 3D content, so you still need the iZ3D Driver or TriDef’s Ignition software to convert games for example, or a software Blu-ray 3D player to output the movie.

One related announcement to the new AMD news is the fact that the new DeusEX: Human Revolution game, supporting DX11 will also have stereoscopic 3D support available. And AMD is claiming support for over 400 game titles in stereoscopic 3D mode through its two main software partners for the gaming in S3D part – iZ3D and DDD. With the company also promising more native stereoscopic 3D games to come out in 2011 (we already know of some like Crysis 2). On the Blu-ray 3D software players support AMD is working with the same major companies like Nvidia is doing with Cyberlink’s PowerDVD 10 Ultra 3D going to be the first to provide the support for hardware accelerated Blu-ray 3D playback of movies from your PC. This will happen on November 5th through a software update that is expected to be released by Cyberlink.

There are however still a lot of unanswered questions like for example will we be able to use lets say an older 120Hz LCD monitor that was introduced with 3D Vision support with AMD’s solution with a new pair of shutter glasses. Will there be only shutter glasses available and not as a bundle at all and who will be selling them or we are going to go for an “open” initiative with 120Hz LCD monitors that are only going to be usable with AMD’s stereo 3D solution and that need to be bought with the glasses bundled. AMD is currently talking about 3D gaming and 3D video, but what about 3D photography that is also gaining more interest… is there support for viewing 3D photos without having to resort to third party software that may or may not work? And what about Eyefinity with stereo 3D support? DX 10 and DX11 support are still quite a bit of a problem for both iZ3D, who have beta support that is kind of working, and DDD who still don’t have anything available to support DX10/11 games. And more and more and more… I’m hoping to soon be able to test the HP Envy 17 laptop to get some first hand impressions from the active shutter glasses support that AMD is starting to offer, because I’ve already had some experience with other stereo 3D products based on both iZ3D and DDD. And I’m eager to get more information from AMD about their stereo 3D support…

A few days ago I’ve mentioned some Interesting Upcoming Games to Try Playing in Stereoscopic 3D Mode and here is what you can expect from the titles that already are available or are expected in the next few days. I’ve had the chance to test some demos and some of the final games in stereo 3D mode already for a bit and here are some of my findings and tips and tricks that might help you to get better results playing them in stereo 3D mode. I’ve already discussed the game Blade Kitten, so below I’ll go with other titles…

Arcania – Gothic 4
The 3D Vision drivers detect the game and load a profile for Gothic 2 instead of Ghotic 4. Shadows are rendered incorrectly and although you have a lot of options to tweak the graphic settings from in-game, you cannot completely disable the shadows and that makes the game quite uncomfortable to be played in stereo 3d mode with 3d vision. The good news is that you can disable the shadows completely from within the config file the game creates called “VideoSettings.xml” and available in Documents under a folder named ArcaniA – Gothinc 4 Demo (and without the demo for the final game). Just open the file with a text editor and edit the value of the attribute “shadows” changing the value from true to false. After that the shadows will be completely gone and the in-game options controlling them will have no effect at all which ultimately makes the game playable in stereo 3D mode, although there are still some minor issues left. These include some objects over characters that are rendered in 2D and some glowing around some of the characters when viewed from a certain direction. Also the water is not being rendered correctly, so you can see halos around objects over water, but as I’ve said the wrongly rendered shadows are the most serious issues and you can pretty much go along with the other minor ones.

Darksiders
No official 3D Vison profile available yet, but the game handles pretty good in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision. There are some issues with the rendering of some of the atmospheric effects like fog, smoke some glowing lights or even some of the fires that may lead to some weird halos around different objects, but the issue is not that serious the game remains quite playable. With some custom convergence settings you can get pretty good results.

Dead Rising 2
Has a 3D Vision profile saying not recommended game, however the game looks almost great in stereo 3D mode with 3D vision. Interestingly enough there is a 3D Vision ready logo being displayed during the start of the game! And pretty much the only thing that might be a bit of a bother and create some issues in stereo 3D mode are the health icons and item icons that you see during the game that are rendered in 2D and thus sometimes may create a wrong depth cue. Other than that the game looks really well in stereo 3D mode…

F1 2010
Has a 3D Vision profile, rated fair with some elements not rendering correctly. But in reality the game looks really great in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision, so probably the rating that Nvidia gave it is a bit off and the issues they mention are actually not present or very minor. The most serious issue actually might be some ghosting you may or may not notice on some high contrasting objects.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
There is no official 3D Vision profile yet, but the game is quite Ok even with the default settings. You have to disable the Shadows and the Volumetric Effects since they do not work well in stereoscopic 3D mode, but other than that the game plays quite well in S3D mode. You can play a bit with the custom convergence, to set Lara’s character as the convergence point for optimum results and stay at lower depth level, otherwise in cutscenes or other taller objects inside the game world you might have trouble focusing on the 3D objects. The red circle below Lara is rendered in 2D and that is presenting some problems together with the crosshair also rendered in 2D, so in getting a better resulting convergence level without issues you’ll have to do some compromises, so stay still with the Lara’s character as the convergence point for best overall result. I’ve provided a custom convergence settings which work great with a depth level of up to about 15%.
- Download the custom convergence settings for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light…

Sid Meier’s Civilization 5
The game has a 3D Vision profile and is rated as Excellent. It performs really good in stereo 3D mode with 3D vision and the only possible issue you might notice is the presence of some ghosting depending on your 3D monitor. High contrasting objects as usually tend to give a some ghosting and here you have an abundance of while clouds over unexplored territory that can cause some ghosting as well as some other minor details too. But pretty much the game looks and plays really well in stereo 3D mode.
