Smart move with having an old reliable tale to tell. J. Cam is trying out newerish techs and 'no one' will give that type of progress a break. It either makes the money or we wait a decade for someone else to get the green light to try again and frankly, surely (ha ha ha, whoever else) He best concentrate on making a very convincing argument for 3D - combining that with some profound story and you are gambling far too much. The payout is progress and that would suck because someone didn't like how the film tackled alien abortion rights or wasn't a crowd fav at some indie festival.

Yes, I wasn't the biggest fan of Avatar as a story. However, being a stereoscopic 3D geek, this hasn't stopped me from seeing it multiple times in the theater and telling others they HAVE to see the movie!

I don't care for the political metaphorical propaganda (the cheap shots referencing 'shock and awe' and 'preemptive strike', etc.) nor the spiritual agenda behind it (pantheistic, sacralizing the environment). But even if you bracket the story apart from these agendas, it was a fairly good story. It was not a great story, however, in that it was predictable and derivative with 1-dimensional characters. Yes, I noticed the parallel with the Last Samurai. Others say it followed Pocahontas, other say Dances with Wolves. Whatever. We've seen this before.

Sure it's the same story told over and over again, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good story. In fact I'd argue that it is such a good story that it is worth retelling in different settings. Personally I prefer the Last Samurai comparison and think that Avatar would've been better if the Na'vi lost in the end.
