I am starting to see definite slowdown on my current card (9800gtx) when playing in 3d with the latest games.
I can either buy a second 9800gtx for SLI or go for a faster single card.

How beneficial is SLI for 3d or is a Faster Card the way?

My Setup.
Motherboard evga nforce 750sli (dual SLI, both at 16x)
Core 2 duo, 3.00ghz
4gig 800 Ram - upgrading to 6gig soon
Windows 7 64bit
Gaming resolution: 1200x800 on a HD66 projector.

I don't want to spend too much as I will do a complete system upgrade next year to latest tech at that time.
I was thinking can either buy another 9800gtx (quite cheap on ebay now) or a single 9800gx2, gtx 200 series or similar.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Two video cards in SLI can scale nicely in stereo 3D, but this usually happens when you play at higher resolution. In your case with you playing on a lower resolution HD projector you better go for a single faster video card. With SLI sometimes you need to play with the SLI profiles in order to achieve the best performance and between different games the additional boost provided by the second GPU can differ greatly. Normally with SLI you get higher minimum framerate and not so big increase in the maximum, so the average may not increase that much, but still the game feels much more comfortable, especially was dropping below 25 fps with the single card. But in your situation if you can find a good deal for a GTX 260 or GTX 275 on eBay you should get a quite good improvement over the 9800 GTX and probably most of the time also better results than dual 9800 cards in SLI...

Yeah and you'll need quite a powerful PSU to handle the load of 2 9800 GTX cards.
I've been thinking about putting a second 8800 GTX in my system too but I'll gain much more if I just replace it with a GTX 560 Ti
