I have an Acer GD245HQ LCD monitor.

Today I've tried to activate 3D on my PS3 which is connected to my Acer GD245HQ, but I was very unhappy when I couldn't see the 720p 3D or 1080p 3D option on the display settings menu. I think if I had a 3DTV, I would've seen those options.

I wonder if anyone is able to use this monitor with PS3D - normal or tricky way.

Please share your experiences with this or another 120Hz 3D monitor.

Unfortunately not only the Acer, but none of the currently available 120Hz LCD monitors works in 3D with the PlayStation 3. The reason for that is that Acer GD245HQ does not support HDMI 1.4(a) for stereo 3D, it has and HDMI 1.3 and the only way to get it to display 3D content is through the Dual-Link DVI port. The PS3 will be able to work only with 3D HDTVs that use the stereoscopic specifications of HDMI 1.4(a)...

Is there any chance that if we use HDMI to Dual-Link DVI cable?

The thing that I don't get is that the PS3 is HDMi 1.3, they cannot upgrade that, I hear they have found a work around, so I was hoping we could find a work around for the monitor. I also have this Acer, and was hoping it would work on the PS3. Would nothing like HDMi 1.4 cable help? Do you think it is possible a work around will be found, I hear nVidia are release a 1.4a patch or something for the 3D Vision device.

Any feedback is appreciated.

The PS3 got a software update to allow the console to send 3D content according to the specifications for 3D defined in the HDMI 1.4(a). Theoretically with a firmware upgrade of the Acer this might also be possible, making the monitor understand 1.4(a) 3D input according to these specs, however upgrading the firmware on a monitor is not an easy task that a normal consumer can do like on the PS3... so no luck there.

I see what you mean. I spoke with Acer and they said it would be the PS3 that would need the update to enable it to support other 3d monitors, but guess just have to wait and see.

Bit annoying really, thing they should give out more precautions about 3D, instead of just going on about it being 3D capable, but only with select number of devices.

There is nothing "3D" about any existing 3D monitor. They are just ORDINARY 120Hz displays. They pretty much only work with nVidia 3D where the synchronization happens at the PC side. In order to work with HDMI 1.4 3D devices such as a PS3, an IR transmitter would need to be driven by the PS3 itself and would need to be calibrated for monitor input/processing lag etc.

Yes, and that is exactly why you need a newer monitor that also has support for HDMI 1.4(a), with such it is almost the same just like plugging the PS3 into a 3D HDTV. These monitors do have built-in IR emitters and the sync is being driven through the HDMI interface...

I'm stumped as to how they could possible make the HDMI 1.4 standard so crappy with a maximum of 24fps 1920x1080 in 2010. Everything consumer oriented is crappy and low quality and compromised. Blu-ray quality sucks IMO. It just looks the same relative quality as DVD on a SDTV. I was expecting something like MP3 vs FLAC. It's choppy, blurry and low FPS. Now the PS3 is limited to the same quality in games because of HDMI 1.4.

nVidia got their 3D right the first time over HALF A DECADE AGO with true 60fps progressive per eye on ancient CRT monitors.
