Stupid question from someone who generally doesn't tamper with drivers... will the EDID driver damage the unit or just ID it as something that the manufacturer didn't?

It will not damage anything, it is entirely on the software side like any other driver, doesn't change anything in the monitor itself.

Is it possible to create a custom EDID? I have a catleap and have to add a custom resolution to add additional refresh rates and it would be great if I could just do it once across all of them.

Yes, it is possible if you know what you are doing... ;)

You need to check some tutorial explaining the structure of the EDID info blocks, so that you know what and how to change the values in it depending on what you want to modify or add.
