Does a monitor still need to be able to put out 120HZ to actually run 3D through HDMI at 24FPS per eye.

Thanks

No, it does not, though most of the active 3D monitors with HDMI 1.4 support do.

There are some active 3D models that are equipped only with HDMI 1.4 interface and on them there is no way to actually use the 120Hz mode, though when in 3D mode the panel actually may still function at 100-120Hz to provide the stereoscopic 3D effect...

Then there are also the passive 3D monitors some of which also support HDMI 1.4 for stereo 3D, though there you'd usually go for Row Interleaved mode for the 1080p resolution as that way you are not limited to only 24Hz refresh rate in 3D mode, but can use 60Hz, though in both cases you get only half the vertical resolution I'm yet to see somebody releasing as 120Hz LCD panel with passive 3D support, this is something that might be quite interesting as a combination, but the price of the product will probably not be very attractive.
