DDD has support for Side by Side output a while ago, but it has been removed for some reason and now it is available yet again in the TriDef 3D Media Player and TriDef 3D Ignition software. DDD has made clarification why the Side by Side support has been removed and why it is now getting back again. Apparently it has been patented, but now that patent has expired...

There have been several enquiries about DDD’s policy on supporting side-by-side (or left-right) 3D content. TriDef Media Player previously supported side-by-side content but it was discontinued. Primarily this was due to the fact that a well known 3D company holds a patent on encoding and decoding 3D content in this format. Out of respect for this IP and to avoid any legal complications we removed support for this format from our software. At the time we did not see this as a serious limitation as the above-below format, which is not encumbered by such IP, is often a better format particularly when using horizontally interlaced 3D displays such as the 3D Acer or Lenovo notebooks.

However, the side-by-side format continues to enjoy popular support from parties who may be unaware of the patent issue or have licensed the technology from the patent holder. We understand that the lack of side-by-side support is inconvenient for our users and we are looking at several different ways of resolving this issue and re-instating support for this format in TriDef Media Player.

DDD is pleased to announce that side-by-side 3D formats are now supported by TriDef 3D 4.6 (released 1st Sept 2011). The side-by-side (or left-right) format was subject to a patent held by a 3rd party. Out of consideration for this patent DDD had removed support for this format from its software.

The patent in question expired in August 2011, so side-by-side stereo 3D encoding and display is now in the public domain. As this format continues to be in popular use we have reinstated it, enabling TriDef 3D users to load photos, videos and DVDs stored in the side-by-side format as well as supporting side-by-side output for both TriDef 3D Media Player and TriDef 3D Ignition.
