Playing the Game Silent Hunter 5 in Stereo 3D with 3D Vision

March 8th, 2010 · 1 Comment · 3DS Games

The game Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic is a sequel to the popular submarine simulation series. In this game you’ll be behind the periscope of a German Type VII U-boat with the goal to attack the Allied Forces in different famous battles across the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. in the fifth game you can finally relive the life of a submarine captain from a first-person view completely controlling the crew and the U-boat. You can say that this game is a must for every submarine simulator fan and the good news is that you can take the level of realism even further by playing the game in stereoscopic 3D mode with the help of 3D Vision…

However as of the moment there is still no official profile for the game available in the 3D Vision driver and you need to tweak the convergence by hand in order for the game to be playable in stereo 3D mode. Of course I’ve prepared custom convergence settings that can help you skip the part where you have to find the right settings by yourself, you can download the file from the link below. You should also disable the Environmental Effects from the game Options menu for best results as when they are active you may notice some weird visual defects in stereo 3D, for example in the water waves around the submarine. If shadows look weird and annoy you inside the submarine you may also want to lower them from the Options until they seem comfortable or completely disable them. Also have in mind that during the cutscenes the stereoscopic 3D effect seems to be gone, although they do not seem to be pre-rendered movies, but after they end it is back again. Increasing brightness a bit might help you in night missions when everything is already dark as the active shutter glasses make these scenes seem even darker. As usual please let me know how these settings work for you in the comments below.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 With a Day 1 Patch that Fixes Stereo 3D

March 5th, 2010 · 1 Comment · 3DS Games

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is now officially out and it got a patch released on the same day as the game became available and the good news is that the patch fixes the problems Bad Company 2 had with 3D Vision in stereo 3D mode, or at least most of them. A few days ago I’ve reported some of the issues the game had before the patch in 3D and the good news is that after installing the patch most of them are gone. If you’ve got the game over Steam or any other downloading service you should already have the patch, but if you got a retail copy on an optical media you should apply the patch to have things working (the game should download it automatically when run, but there might be some issues with that). As I said most things regarding 3D Vision support are fixed, for example there are no more problems with some shadows and lights, the sky is also rendered Ok now, you can even enable HBAO without issues in stereo 3D, there is also no need to disable blood either. Anti-aliasing (AA) however still needs to be turned off (set to 1x in the Options) in order to have 3D Vision working, otherwise you won’t see the stereo effect even after you turn it on. There is also a convergence profile for the game available in the new 196.75 drivers, with Nvidia rating the game as Good, stating about the problems with the sky, so obviously this was done before the patch was released. There also seem to be some performance improvements available and you can now even control the FOV trough the settings.ini configuration file of the game with default setting being 55 degrees. Anyway, now with the first patch for Bad Company 2 the game is actually like what was promised at first – a 3D Vision-ready title that looks really well in stereoscopic 3D mode, so if you were waiting just for that go and get your copy now.

Just Cause 2 Demo is Available on Steam and Supports 3D Vision

March 4th, 2010 · 4 Comments · 3DS Games

Just yesterday I’ve shared the information that the game Just Cause 2 will be 3D Vision-ready title and today we already have the demo of the game available on Steam. The good news is that the demo also works just fine with 3D Vision, so you can get a feel of what to expect form the full game when it is out later this month, however there are a few issues that you should be aware of regarding the demo. The game really looks great in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision even with all the additional effects enabled so it is really done with S3D in mind, but the demo however has some minor issues. You should start with the installation the 3D Vision driver included in the just made available 196.75 drivers as these drivers are the first ones that do include a 3D Vision profile for the game. Not that if you use older driver without the game profile you’ll have some issues as the default convergence level in the game is just fine, it maybe needs just some fine tweaking for optimum results, but that also depends on personal preferences. If you have an SLI system with two or more Nvidia video cards you should disable the SLI before running the demo of the game if you plan to play it in stereo 3D mode as it seems that the demo has some issues with SLI and 3D Vision working together. With SLI enabled when you switch to stereoscopic 3D mode by enabling the 3D Vision the left frame in the game (right when taking a 3D screenshot) is almost completely dark creating a very weird feeling and making the S3D mode unusable until you disable SLI. The last thing you should be aware of is that the demo and probably the final game is quite demanding in terms of graphical performance, especially if you wish to play it in stereoscopic 3D mode.
