Cesar Sommer has made available a new stereoscopic 3D video, a short music clip called “Fly With Me”, you can watch the YouTube 3D video embedded above or download it in Side by Side format from his website, along with some more of his 3D videos. You can also watch the 3D video on the 3DVisionLive website if you have a 3D Vision setup. The video was shot with the Sony 3D HXR-NX3D1 camera for close up shots (about 40% of the footage), the rest was shot with a custom made 3D rig using Canon 5D mark II’s for higher IO. Welcome to the crazy world of Gumball 3000, this short 3D video from the 2011 Gumball 3000 rally start day in London that was shot and shared by iWATCH3D, using the Sony HDR-TD10E consumer 3D camcorder for shooting Sony Vegas 11 for editing it. You are sure to enjoy it as it shows some really nice cars in good 3D, so no reason not to take a look. Below you will also find a download link for the YouTube 3D video embedded above in Side by Side format, so you can download it on your computer and watch it using the 3D Vision Video Player or the Stereoscopic player (don’t forget to select 16:9 aspect). Would You Watch the Movie Wrath of the Titans in 3D?

If you’ve seen the Clash of the Titans in 3D last year you might’ve left the movie theater very disappointed, both from the movie being nothing special and the fact that the 3D was actually quite bad, so bad in fact that when talking about bad conversion to 3D of a movie most people directly associate it with that particular title. And indeed the conversion from the 2D footage that was originally shot for that movie to 3D wasn’t done good and the fact that the movie was full of special effects did not help much the conversion to 3D. And now it is time for the sequel of the movie called Wrath of the Titans (3D) and yet again it was not shot in 3D, but was instead shot in 2D and them converted to 3D in post, so are you ready for another disappointment? Haven’t seem the movie myself yet, and I’m not really sure that I’d go to see it after the disappointment from the first one and the first reviews about the Wrath of the Titans aren’t doing it any good without even mentioning the 3D of the movie. So would you go and watch it and in 3D or not, knowing that it is converted to 3D and with all the bad reviews from the previous movie?

What is interesting in this video is the fact that it was not shot with a professional 3D camcorder, but instead a consumer one was used – the Sony HDR-TD10. The Pirates! Band of Misfits Official Movie Trailer in Stereo 3D

The Pirates! Band of Misfits is an upcoming stop-motion animated (or should I say claymation instead of animation) 3D movie, and embedded here you can take a look at the official movie trailer in stereo 3D format (the audio is in Russian) and there is also a 2D version with English audio you can watch online here. The Pirates! Band of Misfits looks like a really fun movie to watch and the visual style you get in it is also appealing, especially when you couple all that with being made in 3D. The movie should be available the movie theaters in 3D starting April 27th for US and Canada (earlier in Europe) and you can also find more about specific countries’ release dates on the official website of the movie. Below you can also find a download link for the YouTube 3D trailer embedded above, you can get it in MP4 format, Over/Under with half vertical resolution, so do not forget to set 16:9 aspect ratio when opening the video in 3D Vision Video Player or the Stereoscopic Player for example. The Original “The Phantom of the Opera” Movie Restored in 3D

Did you know that the silent classic “The Phantom of the Opera” was actually shot in stereoscopic 3D format more than 80 years ago, actually filming each and every scene with two movie cameras, was a customary technique in the silent film era, so the movie was actually unintentionally shot in 3D. Making this interesting discovery in 2010, filmmaker and author Carl Hernz went to work on matching the stereoscopic views accidentally created by this fortunate mechanical setup and soon the movie will make its first public screening in 3D. The first public screening as part of a benefit for the Florida Hospital Neuroscience Institute Parkinson Outreach Center on April 30 in Orlando, FL USA. The historic Enzian theater is scheduled to be the venue, and stereographer/producer Carl Hernz (who himself has young-onset Parkinson’s disease) will be there as well. April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness month, and the world premiere of this historical find will definitely shine a bright light so needed on many PD issues. And the film will be featured in several film festivals in the U.S. and other countries before its major release on Halloween night, October 31, 2012.

Was The Star Wars Episode 1 3D Conversion a Success or Not

The Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D has been available for a while now in movie theaters and although it may not have generate that much interest as George Lucas has hoped for, he can generally consider the conversion to 3D a success. Some people were Ok with the level of quality of the conversion to 3D, others were disappointed, but in the end it is all down to the numbers for the big guys in Hollywood. And it depends on these numbers if Lucas will decide to convert the other parts of the Star wars saga in 3D as well or not, but it is not only about the Star Wars as other movie studios are also interested in the results to help them decide should they convert old movies in 3D and bring them back to the big screen for a re-release in 3D…

So based on the numbers was the Star Wars Episode 1 3D conversion a success or not? The US box office shows that the movie has generated over $40 million dollars revenue and internationally the 3D release of Star Wars Episode 1 has accumulated over $46 million dollars, so getting something like $100 million US dollars worldwide in just about a month for an old movie that was converted to 3D is something that can be considered as a success. The budget required for a 3D conversion is significantly less that what you would need for shooting a large scale new movie and with a revenue from it going to something like $100 million dollars for everyone looking just at the numbers is a huge success. Does that make the viewers expecting a spectacular experience from the 3D conversion happy, probably not that much as the experience could’ve been better, and hopefully we’ll get it improved in the next episodes. And we can assume that with results like these Lucas will decide to give 3D conversion another try with the next episode from the saga, because these numbers seem encouraging.

Up until now there haven’t been that many old movies brough back to life on the big screen converted in 3D, there have been quite a lot of disappointments coming from new movies that were shot in 2D and then converted to 3D… and not that well converted. And until now animations were the ones getting the 3D threatment in terms of conversions from 2D to 3D, and the results that Disney’s The Lion King 3D and Beauty and the Beast 3D were so good (in terms of numbers) that Disney decided to convert more of its animated movies and bring them in 3D on the big screen again. The Lion King converted in 3D is by far the top grossing old 2D animation converted to 3D (and such movie for that matter) surpassing worldwide gross of over $160 million dollars so far. But now that the Star Wars Episode 1 3D conversion is old news, all eyes are directed on the upcoming digitally re-mastered 3D conversion of James Cameron’s Titanic that will be re-released in early April to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ship Titanic setting sail.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards – Black and White and 3D

The 84th Annual Academy Awards are over and the big winner this year is the black and white movie The Artist directed and written by Michel Hazanavicius (who also got an Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing for that movie). Jean Dujardin got the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in The Artist, and the movie also got Oscars for Best Achievement in Costume Design and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score. A black and white movie winning the Best Motion Picture of the Year Oscar award, you got to be kidding right? And here some people were actually expecting that another movie might get that award, a one that also tells a story roughly from the same time that The Artist’s story is happening, but is in 3D – Hugo, directed by Martin Scorsese. Nevertheless Hugo got its fair share of Oscars as well, and although not getting the Best Motion Picture of the Year award, but it still got 5 Oscars in total: Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

So both The Artist and Hugo got 5 Oscars in different categories, although for the Artist two of the awards were for the director and leading actor, not for the movie itself directly and in the case of Hugo it got 5 Oscars as well, but all were for the movie. So you can say that the big winners in this year’s 84th Annual Academy Awards were a black and white movie and a 3D movie – The Artist and Hugo, definitely an interesting combination. Not sure if this will make more directors going for the black and white artistic movies, but it should help those that were considering making a 3D movie in deciding in favor of the new format. Of course just making a movie in 3D does not mean it will be great, you have other things to take care of as well – things like a good script for example ;)

Mint Julep – To the Sea, an Experimental 3D Wiggle Music Video

You have probably seen some animated 3D photos using the wiggle method to create the illusion of depth in a photo by quickly rotating the left and right eye views of a 3D photo (and with more than two views for more convincing and seamless effect), but here comes what is probably the first 3D video using this method. To the Sea is a an experimental music video of the group Mint Julep using 3D wiggle and the end result is actually quite good and interesting to watch, so do take a look and feel free to leave your comments about it below.
