The Oculus Rift pre-orders are now open with price of $59900!!! USD per unit, probably a mistake as somebody forgot the dot before the zeroes with actual price of $599 for the device (hopefully it will be fixed shortly). The kit includes the Rift headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, Xbox One Controller, EVE: Valkyrie, and Lucky’s Tale and the expected ship date is March 2016, the end of the month starting on March 28th. The price is a bit higher than I have anticipated, but it was expected that it will be more than the two dev kits released already, also because of the hardware upgrade to dual OLED screens. Even at $599 USD probably there will be a lot of early adopters, however probably not as much as if the device was $499 or even $399 USD, prices, that would have made it much more attractive to a wider audience. You should also not forget the fact that Oculus Rift has pretty high demands for the CPU and especially the GPU in your computer in order to provide a pleasant experience with high enough framerate. So the initial target, aside from VR enthusiasts, would be more serious gamers and hardware enthusiasts with high-end systems for whom the higher price tag will not matter that much.
Update: Somebody at Oculus must have realized the mistake and the price is now properly written as $599.00 USD instead of the initial shocking number saying $59900 USD (without the dot separating the cents).
