Nvidia Bringing Back Silently the Generic CRT display 3D Support?

Today while playing with a non-3D Vision ready 3D monitor I’ve noticed something interesting in the Nvidia Control Panel – an option to select Generic CRT display mode for stereoscopic 3D support with 3D Vision. And that 3D monitor worked just fine using both its own 3D glasses as well as with the 3D Vision glasses using the Generic CRT mode. Nvidia has stopped supporting the Generic CRT display mode a while ago, but it seems that they are bringing it back again. Have in mind that you need to have a 3D Vision IR emitter connected to the PC over USB in order for you to see the Generic CRT display option available in the Stereoscopic 3D panel. Also I’m using Windows 8 OS, so it is possible that it is only supported in it, unfortunately I cannot test it under Windows 7 at the moment, but you are welcome to try it out and post your results. I’ve checked that the Generic CRT display mode is present in both the latest WHQL and the latest Beta video drivers and works just fine. This could be good news for owners of Samsung 3D monitors that are not officially compatible with 3D Vision as well as other LCD monitors with support for higher refresh rates as well as for owners of old CRT monitors.

Just checked the express install of 314.07 on Windows 7 Ultimate and it has no such option. I even grabbed the old Dell CRT out of the garage to verify – only lists my Optoma projector and the 3D discover option :(

Maybe it is working only in Windows 8…

Bloody, have you checked if this option only apperas if you’re using a HDMI 1.3 device, or HDMI 1.4 as well??? I ask you this because when we use a 3DTV that has HDMI 1.4, I can now select 2 options, 3DTV Play or HDMI Checkerboard. It would be great if I could also select from the same pop up window the Generic CRT mode. My Samsung 2010 3DTV supports Checkerboard and also frame sequential mode. It’s awesome to be able to play games using a 3DTV in 1080p60hz = 30fps per eye.
You can bet that many games are very playable at 30fps, which is the consoles average frame rate. Generic CRT mode is awesome and much better than 3DTV Play and it’s lame 1080p24hz mode.

I’ve played Dead Space 3 using my TV in Generic CRT mode 1080p30hz full resolution per eye and loved it. Checkerboard is not the same for me despite the 60fps, cause it lacks quality unlike FS mode.
I am using a workaround to make this mode work, but I wish Nvidia could just bring it back for the newer drivers.
I see you’re using a HDMI 1.3 device, so I really would like you to test if this option is also available with 3DTV Play (HDMI 1.4 devices).

I’m using DVI, not HDMI on a 120Hz non 3D Vision-compatible LCD monitor.

I wish they would silently bring back checkerboard support!

So does it work with a analog CRT monitor or not?
Id really like to try 3d gaming, on my CRT, since i have not found a single 3d display that would suit my needs. (eg contrast, colors, view angle etc.)

Trying 1352×1014 @ 120Hz crt would be nice enough for me :S

2d i usually play at 2048×1536 @ 80Hz, so i really see no point in upgrading to a much inferior lcd monitor at this point :S

It should work as long as you see the option available. If you can borrow an 3D Vision kit from a friend you can test it out and see how it works out before deciding to buy one yourself.

    Hey Bloody,

What non 3D Vision Ready monitor have you tried? Is it the Samsung S27A950D??? I have this monitor and I have to use a modded EDID to get 3D Vision unoficial support.

Viewsonic V3D241wm – I’ve posted the EDID Inf here: http://3dvision-blog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2025&p=12206#p12206

Bloody – Are you using vision 2 glasses, or the glasses that came with monitor?

  • 12 Bloody // May 4, 2013 at 13:32

It works with both using the Generic CRT mode enabled…

Can someone please tell me what formats BOTH Nvidia 3DTV Play and 3D Vision support as of 2013?

Framepacking : I am sure is still there on “3dtv”
Generic CRT : “Frame Sequential”? Either?
DLP HD Television : “Checkerboard”? Either?
    SBS, Full/Half : Either?
    Top Bottom, Full/Half ? Either?
    Interlaced/Interleaved? Either?

If I had a tv that supports hdmi 1.4 and TRUE 120hz refresh rate. Would generic mode work for this tv given I have 3d vision kit with ir transmitter?
