Photos of the Latest Oculus Rift Dev Kit Prototype

November 28th, 2012 · 6 Comments · 3D / AR / VR / HMD

Here is how the latest working prototypes of the development kits of the Oculus Rift 3D-capable HMD device currently look like and the Oculus team expects that this is how the final Dev Kits will most likely look like as well, maybe with some minor changes. Probably won’t win any design awards, but with the development kits of the device the functionality is far more important and when the consumer version of the Rift becomes available then they can focus on more appealing design. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait around four more months before we’ll be able to actually get the first Dev Kits of the Oculus Rift, meanwhile there should be more information about the device becoming available soon from Palmer Luckey and the Oculus team…

Im really surprised you dont like the design. But that looks extremely sleek and much better then I would of imagined at the cost. Looks much better and MUCH more comfortable then the hmz-t1. I actually think its best looking hmd to date.

Thats wierd… is that a camera on the outside? Dont remember reading about that.

err nm. Thats probably part of the motion sensor I guess.

Does anyone know if you can wear glasses with this? Or if it is so close to your eyes do you need glasses? I can only see clearly about 5 inches from my eyes.

I didn’t say I don’t like the design, but it can be further improved… ;)

It looks a lot like a camera sensor, but it is more likely a LED light.

Glasses could be a problem with this design, especially bigger ones.

If that is an LED, I stand corrected lol.
Massive LED’s on devices always looks dorky… now its strapped to your forehead lol.

I am very interested to see if there is a tight sweet spot for focus like the hmz-t1, hopefully not, it’s one of my pet hates about my hmz :(
