QuakeCon 2012 Panel – Virtual Insanity – The Future of Gaming

August 6th, 2012 · 3 Comments · General 3D News

Here is a video recording of th Virtual Insanity panel at QuakeCon 2012 featuring John Carmack (id Software), Michael Abrash (Valve), and Palmer Luckey (Oculus). Moderated by Todd Hollenshead (id Software). The guys are talking about AR, VR, stereo 3d and future of gaming with these technologies getting adopted for gaming, and of course a lot more information about the Oculus Rift… spend an hour to watch it if you weren’t able to attend QuakeCon.

Todd and John can stand in the same room together without a fight breaking out…. I am shocked.

Considering John loves Stereo 3D and Todd hates it and went out of his way to make Skyrim hard to run in Stereo3D on PC.

P.S. John Carmack failed to right a faster texture renderer than the Ultima Underworld guys… A little bit of 1991 history.

Hopefully, they come through eventually. Sounds like they have a ways to go. I just hope you can use it to watch 3d movies and stuff. It sounds like it wont. With the type of optics that can surround you, that would totally distort a normal image. I guess they could process the image to fix the distortions to some degree.

Well, they specifically said the Rift is aimed at gamers and movie lovers should go for the Sony solution. Personally I don’t see any use for watching a movie with a HMD unless one is on the road or on vacation, that is if you have a 3dtv of course.
Todd is obviously much more interested in AR than VR, but Skyrim will be an awesome experience with the Rift. It is not really much of a surprise that 3d is not Bethesda’s thing, they are after all trying to go mainstream with skyrim and s-3d is far from it.
