Playing the Game Blades of Time in Stereo 3D Mode with 3D Vision

April 30th, 2012 · 12 Comments · Stereo 3D Games

Blades of Time is a new hack and slash type action-adventure game developed by Gaijin Entertainment, the same company that has made the game X-Blades, and the two games actually share way too many similarities, although they are not really related officially in the form of a sequel/prequel. Considering how good X-Blades looks in stereoscopic 3D mode with 3D Vision I was eager to see will Blades of Time also have a good stereo 3D compatibility. The game offers detailed environments, a lot of effects and fast action which makes it a great candidate for a nice experience in stereoscopic 3D mode, and even though it has not be designed to be a stereo 3D title it actually does quite Ok.

Blades of Time does not yet have a 3D Vision profile, but even without one the default settings work Ok, you may do a tiny bit of convergence adjustment as a fine tuning and then you can start pushing the depth really high. With that said though, there are some issues in stereo 3D mode that you should be aware of, like the problem with the shadows not properly rendered in S3D, but you can disable them from the Options menu. The other problematic thing is related to the text being displayed on the screen when in stereo 3D mode, the same goes for some other HUD elements as well as the crosshair when shooting with a gun. Other than that, the item icons also render in 2D, but that s a minor thing. If you plan to push for the maximum depth for the normal more distant view you may have to be aware that when using the compass and in other closeup modes you may have trouble in stereo 3D mode, but even with moderate depth level the things look quite well when rendered in stereoscopic 3D mode. So Blades of Time might not be the greatest title of all time or a very special game, but it could be a fun thing to play for a while and waste some time, and doing it in stereoscopic 3D mode makes it even better. Hopefully the developer of the game will pay some attention to the stereoscopic 3D gamers and release an update addressing the issues in S3D mode and meanwhile there is a demo of the game that you can download and try before deciding if you want to get the full game or not…

To download the demo of the game Blades of Time from Steam and try it out…

Is there going to be a ps 3 3d version?
    If not, why not?

The game was never meant to support stereoscopic 3D, it is “by chance” that it works quite well in stereo 3D mode on PC and with a little more effort it could be fixed to look great. But for consoles, if you don’t make a game with specific S3D support from the start, there is no chance to add it after that… unless of course this becomes a priority for the developer and they kind of “re-release” it as it would require some serious work to be done.

I am one of the people who have been working on helix mod fixes. I was actually going to fix this game up but it doesnt work at all for me. Looks like death lol http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/eqzitara/image/4f8f78da378501ad62000000/
It may be due to having a 680 gtx(lots of problems…sigh). Anywho if someone wants to grab the shaders for shadows. I wrote a guide on how to remove effects here. (I cant fix shadows = (

Can also fix crosshair/2d text probably but unfortunately either someone else has to do it or I need a working driver = /
If someone finds a solution please contact eqzitara @ nvidia forums.

Self plug: Try out Hunted: The demon’s forge if you can get it cheap. Was my biggest fix to date. Game gets so much bad press but its so much fun as a coop game. 3D makes this game VERY NICE

I just tried a new driver and got it to work.
Retail does not have the issue with menu rendering in one eye/text rendering in one eye.
Game has a lot of lighting/fog/dust ghosting.

I’d rate it as good. Unfortunately the helix debugger cant pick out crosshair shader for it.

while running in 3D the graphics would become mostly white and distorted, any ideas why this is happening? i have driver 301.10 and a gtx 680

Try the other driver(i dont remember which, there are only 2 for 680) I had same issue. I got the other driver to work.

I’m using a GTX 560 Ti and driver 301.24 (with should be the new driver eqzitara mentioned…?). But I’ve still the same issues like Josh and eqzitara with the old driver :(
@ eqzitara : What do You exactly mean with “retail version”? I tried the steam version. Is there a boxed version of the game ? Does the demo on steam now work for You with the new drivers? Maybe there had been an update that messed up S3D and the older boxed version doesn’t have this issue…?

    Update:
It seems that for PC there is only the steam version.
As I couldn’t play the game with a very old (266.66), a newer (296.10) and the newest driver (301.24) and 3D Vision I tried it with iZ3D shutter mode. I only had to turn off shadows and remove a single heat effect shader with Helixmod. Now the game offers perfect S3D!

No clue, I had issue till I tried diff. driver. Found game kind of dull tbh. Glad it worked out for you. IZ3D works much better then 3d vision for unreal engine games(besides 3d vision ready ones). Game looks good though in 3d but gave me a feeling like it was trying too hard to be tomb raider meets devil may cry battle system.

nm. Its not unreal engine. Not sure what possessed me to say that.

  • 12 BertyGamer // May 12, 2012 at 19:18

301.24 and problem with. I’m sure that it’s not unreal engine.

@3d4dd : “Now the game offers perfect S3D”.
Could you say us more about that ?
