I Have My GoPro 3D Hero Plus Two GoPro HD Hero2 Cameras Setup

March 28th, 2012 · 17 Comments · Shooting in 3D

I’ve finally received my order of GoPro 3D Hero plus the two GoPro HD Hero2 cameras and everything is ready and setup to start testing the system as well as to do some experimenting and of course to shoot some nice stereo 3D footage with it. Just a reminder, when using the GoPro 3D Hero you are getting 35mm fixed interaxial distance, but you can use some DIY magic to modify it to allow adjustable interaxial. I’ll be doing that soon, but I need to get another GoPro 3D Hero adapter for that as the electronics in the kit need to be modified as well…

The orange adapter that connects both cameras in order to synchronize them comes with a very short cable that is only suitable for use with the small 35mm interaxial setup that the 3D Hero is originally intended for. You can however solder a longer cable for a modified version with a variable interaxial distance that will also be using two separate cases for the cameras instead of the one provided with the 3D Hero. I’ll be getting into more detail about that very soon, as well as into experimenting in adding another slave camera in order to get a three camera setup with the idea to maybe further extend this into an array of cameras.

    Hello,

I’m waiting for this cable http://www.chargeconverter.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=153 that will allow to get more separation between the cameras. Of course, it does not replace the original cable, but extends it.

    Just like me :)
How about this $5 extension cable?

While the connector seems to be pretty much the same as what Apple uses for their data cables, the normal dock/charging cables for iPhone/iPod/iPad simply don’t have all the pins in the connector. This means that not all (if any) of these cheap i-cables may work as an alternative… the GoPro cable uses 9 wires while the i-cables usually come with only four (required for USB data and power).

Bloody, you are right. In more, the connector slightly differs from the ipod one, and you cannot plug de ipod cable without forcing.

My linked cable arrives in a few days, but i read it’s also transmit video, and all pins are connected.
The shorter one doesn’t have all pins.

FYI if you plan on using the 3d Hero case for underwater video with your Hero 2′s, get an aftermarket flat lens. I took a stock case to Hawaii over the holidays and was quite disappointed that the new cameras have the same problem with blur underwater.

I’d be happy to throw in for a kickstarter for a longer cable, particularly if someone would develop a waterproof cable and waterproof backs so you could use two standard cases and set your inter-ocular distance and go diving. :)

We have an extension cable that works for the GoPro LCD bacpak and 3D sync cable.

At the same time? LCD+3D sync?
    link please

Mikael Wahlgren, are you based in Sweden, just wondering where you ship from as your online store has no information about that…

Unfortunatly my long sync cable is still on the way from dealextreme :(
But i tested my 2 hero2 with the 3D case, and noticed that the left video is darker and more satureted than the right. Is it also so by you Bloody? Very strange. I have to correct all this failures in post :(
Both cams have the same settings, firmware, etc.

I own two Hero2 with 3D housing but I remain from many months (4 months…) waiting for the firmware for 3D…
    When will this firmware come?
Gopro hat promise me “it will come in some weeks”, but it is MANY, MANY weeks…
    It is not fair!

  • 15 Mikael Wahlgren // May 2, 2012 at 22:26

Afaik it has been out for a long time (V70).

  • 16 Colt // May 12, 2012 at 04:37

Roux I believe the firmware should be released within the next couple of weeks. I’m waiting on the same firmware for my Hero 2. It will be worth it in the end!

Kitarolivier: the sync extender cable from dealeextrem doesn’t work :(. If i connect with it, one of the gopros doesn’t start. If i remove, it does. It seems that some cable are connected in the cable that should not be. Furtunatly the gopro remain good :)
    I ordered a 30cm version from ridax.se
