3D Screen Activator for Toshiba Qosmio F750/F755 3D Laptops

November 24th, 2011 · 20 Comments · Other S3D Tech

3D Screen Activator is the new name of the “Screen Mode Changer” software made by Kevin Cox. It is a very useful free tool that allows you to unlock the full potential of the Toshiba Qosmio F750 and F755 3D laptops that come with autostereoscopic 3D display (no 3D glasses required), but its 3D capabilities by default are quite limited. Using the 3D Screen Activator software you can switch any application in a window or in full screen into 3D mode accepting either Side by Side or Row-interleaved format. This means that you can view videos in stereo 3D mode using your favorite video player, you just need to set the application to use the right 3D mode via the 3D Screen Activator and have the 3D videos encoded in Side by Side or Interleaved format. Using this software together with the iZ3D driver or DDD’s TriDef 3D software you are also able to rung games in stereo 3D mode, although the video cards in these laptops from Toshiba are not the best choice for gaming, especially in stereo 3D mode. So if you have Toshiba Qosmio F750 or F755 3D laptops this software is a must. And the only thing that I’m missing from the old Screen Mode Changer in the new 3D Screen Activator software is the availability of a hot-key that will allow you to quickly switch back into 2D mode without having to go through the menu of the software in the system tray, hopefully such a feature will be available in the next version.

I’m helping Kevin (the author of this great tool) to use the 3D “special key” above the keyboard as a global hotkey for switching stereoscopic mode. He will release a new version soon ;-)

“This means that you can view videos in stereo 3D mode using your favorite video player, you just need to set the application to use the right 3D mode via the 3D Screen Activator and have the 3D videos encoded in Side by Side or Interleaved format. ” Amazing! :D Does this mean that you can watch 3D-video in VLC or MPC? While using all the other features these players has?

@Gustav – if the video is already side:side or interlaced then yes, otherwise you can play just about any format with the Stereoscopic Player.

Just an addition: You can also instruct the app to start 3D automatically if a certain program (like MPC) is launched. The only drawback I see at the moment is a slightly constant CPU load even in 2D mode.

Update: Kevin released version 1.1 of his tool. Now you can use the built in “3D” key to active the autostereoscopic mode in any application. Nice work!

Remove any old version if you have one before installing the latest one. Reinstall the software and try restarting the computer…

When I try to use the software I get the message:
Can’t change screen mde: Screenresolution isn’t set to 1920×1080 60hz
even though I changed the screen settings to these values.

the issue is to see streaming 3D video for example from Yahoo 3D site. 3D screen activator would allow the selection of which window we want to see in 3D. I wonder why Toshiba team disable this

IN ORDER TO SEE AGAIN THE 3D SCREEN ACTIVATOR ICON ON THE TASK BAR YOU NEED TO ENTER KEVIN COX WEBSITE WHRE INSTRUCTIONS ARE TO DELETE SOME FILE ON THE REGISTRY.
NOW I CAN HAVE NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL ON 3D AND TRIDEF IN 3D WITH THE 3D SCREEN ACTIVATOR WORKING BUT YOU CAN ONLY RUN ONE PROGRAM OR THE OTHER ONE.
RUNNING THE TRIDEF YOU NEED TO DISABLE STEREO 3D ON THE NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL.

  • 16 Bloody // Feb 4, 2012 at 11:30

The program says it’s allready running while it obviously isn’t?

Remove the following registry value (or set it to 0):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\3D Screen Activator\Running

You can edit the Windows registry by typing “regedit” (without the quotes) in the start menu followed by [Enter].

  • 17 ROBERTO // Feb 5, 2012 at 05:50

YOU CAN CONTACT KEVIN COX BY EMAIL AND HE CAN SEND YOU AN AUTOMATIC DELETE FILE AND ITS WORKING PERFECTLY.
THE 3D ACTIVATOR IS AGAIN IN THE TASK BAR.
KEVIN COX IS THE BEST !!!!!!!

Don’t know if this might be of any help/interest to people.

I installed the 3D-screen-activator when I first got my Qosmio 755 last year, and it worked.

Then I didn’t use 3D for a while, and recently, when I came back to it, the 3d activator didn’t work, returning the familiar “Screenresolution isn’t set to 1920×1080 60hz”, even though it was.

As I am a tinkerer, I experimented and disabled the resolution check in options. Now it worked, but it only affected the top left corner of the screen – about 50-60%, both horizontally and vertically.

I wondered what I had done with the machine between 3D working and not working. At one point I had it plugged into a 3D TV by HDMI. The TV was no longer connected, so it shouldn’t make a difference, but just in case, I connected, and then told the Screen Resolution Panel to ignore it, before disconnecting again. No difference.

After a few hours, I had an idea. Accessing the Screen Resolution Panel again (right-click on desktop), I clicked on the “Make text and other items larger or smaller” item. It gives 3 settings. Smaller – 100%, Medium – 125% (Default) and Larger – 150%. Because I had been using the laptop as work machine, I had set it to larger. Ironically, I had done this to make icons and text larger without changing the resolution, so as not to muck up 3D displays.

Experimenting, I found that 3D Screen Activator works when this setting is set to either Smaller or Medium. When set to large, and with the resolution check on, it reports “Screenresolution isn’t set to 1920×1080 60hz”. Just changing back to the default of Medium made everything work again.

Not sure what Windows is doing when it is changed to Larger – I don’t think it is changing the resolution, as everything says I am still on 1920 x 1080. But it’s obvious that something is being messed up.

Many thanks to Kevin for an excellent bit of software, and perhaps it can be tweaked some time in the future? I’ll be dropping him an email about it, next.

What about a linux port of this software ?
I’m willing to help implement it, but i know almost nothing about drivers creation, thus a bit of help about how this software work in windows would help!

If anyone have sources of this software, and / or explanation on how to figure out how to make it work in linux, please mail me :)

This screen is the only reason i don’t remove windows from my laptop …
