Sony’s PlayStation 3D Monitor To Be Available on December 31st

August 8th, 2011 · 4 Comments · General 3D News

The 24-inch Sony PlayStation 3D Monitor (CECH-ZED1) was expected to be released sometime in the Autumn this year with a price of $499.99 USD that also includes a pair of 3D glasses bundled, however it seems the release date has been moved for the holiday season. Amazon has the PlayStation 3D monitor available for pre-order with a release date set for December 31 with the price still at $499.99 USD. Considering how the 3D monitor is named, you can expect it to be designed for use with the PlayStation 3 console and unfortunately it will not be a great choice for PC 3D gamers as it will not feature a DVI or DisplayPort that will allow it to work at 1080p with 120Hz, instead it will be with HDMI 1.4 interface and will be more like a 3D HDTV in that aspect (limited to the HDMI 1.4 stereo 3D specs). Still, the expectations for this product from Sony are very high in terms of quality and performance (very little crosstalk/ghosting in 3D mode), making it more attractive choice for console 3D gamers than what is currently available on the market in terms of compatible 3D monitors (not 3D HDTVs) in a similar price range. But let us wait and see what will Sony provide us with at the end of this year and if it will really be worth waiting for, although if you don’t want to wait, there are already alternatives available that can work with both PC and PS3 in stereoscopic 3D mode.

Who in the world releases a product on the last day of a year? Wouldn’t it be more attractive to any potential customer if it was released short before Christmas? However it’s sad to hear that they suspend S3D-interested PC-Gamers, although the design is not that… PC-like and they too want to sell their own glasses.

why would anyone buy this if other 3d monitors at similar prices can handle nvida 3d vision and hdmi 1.4 for ps3? i guess being that a large portion of gaming console fans are clueless when it comes to pc parts, such as 3d vision monitors, there is a chance this ps3 3d monitor will sell more than many 3d vision ready monitors.

That is most likely just a place holder date. They announced it would be released in the Fall, but haven’t given an exact date yet.

And why do all those companies continue building 3D monitors of such small sizes, while it is now clear that a real 3D immersion starts with screens of at least 27 inches? I personnally could not live anymore without my monitor Acer HN274H and my projector Optoma HD67N!
