According to a resent research made by IHS iSuppli’s analysts the global 3D HDTV shipments for this year will grow by a factor of 5.5 for 2011 from the 4.2 million units sold last year and that is a huge increase. Thanks to the prices of 3D HDTVs becoming more attractive to customers and more 3D content becoming available, the worldwide shipments predicted by IHS iSupply for 2011 is about 23.4 million units. According to the research the growth will continue in 2012 when global shipments are expected to reach 54.2 million units, in 2014 they will breach 100-million and then hit 159.2 million in 2015.
Of course it is never too late for good surprises and the actual numbers to become even higher, but having such big growth predicted by analysts actually means that 3D HDTVs are here to stay as 3D technology is in general and maybe in 2015 the 3D functionality maybe something expected from a new HDTV just like the Full HD resolution is at the moment. It seems that prices for 3D HDTVs are continuing to drop from month to month with 9 percent decrease in the price of 3D HDTVs for March 2011 compared to February in US (in other countries this may vary, but the trend should be present).
“In a major recalibration effort, television brands are changing strategies this year following lukewarm response to 3-D in 2010 when consumers balked at the high price of sets and the lack of 3-D content,” said Riddhi Patel, director for television systems and retail services at IHS. “In 2011, however, brands are marketing 3-D not as a must-have technology but as a desirable feature, similar to the approach they have taken with Internet connectivity.”
It seems that LCD will remain the dominant technology for the 3D HDTV market, accounting for about 83 percent of 3D TVs sold in 2011, and 3D Plasma HDTVs will remain a smaller player. However, 3D penetration in plasma is higher as plasma manufacturers hope this extra feature will help to slow down the decline of the plasma market, although in general 3D on plasma is considered to be better and with less crosstalk. The 3D TV share of the global flat-panel market will continue to rise in the years to come according to the research, jumping to 11 percent in 2011 from just 2 percent last year, and then doubling next year to 22 percent. By 2015, 3D TVs should account for 52 percent of flat-panel shipments. The most popular 3D HDTV size during 2011 according to IHS iSuppli is expected to be in the 40- to 41-inch range, numbering about 3.3 million units; then followed by the 55- to 59-inch range, with shipments of 2.9 million units; and the 45- to 46-inch range, with 2.7 million units.
