More Stereo 3D Content for the PlayStation 3 Coming from Sony

March 22nd, 2011 · 9 Comments · General 3D News

Apparently Sony has serious plans for pushing more stereoscopic 3D content to the PlayStation 3 consoles this year and we are not talking about games with support for stereo 3D, but movies as well. On the PlayStation blog Sony has shared the above inforgraphic showing some interesting information about the notable 3D content coming in 2011 to the PS3. By the end of 2011 there should be nearly 30 stereo 3D-capable games available with some major sequels such as Uncharted 3, Socom 4 and Killzone 3. And apparently more and more people are adopting 3D-capable HDTVs as the information that 20% of the Killzone 3 single player demo downloads were in 3D hints. Of course just 20% isn’t that big of a number, but then again you should also take into account the fact that the number of PlayStation 3 users is much, much higher as compared to the ones that already have a 3D HDTV. Another interesting thing is the number of downloads of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3-D Experience Exclusive Sneak Peek has generated, 83 thousand in one week… again not that big of a number, but apparently Sony thinks it is a good one. Aside from the Blu-ray 3D movie playback that the PS3 supports, Sony is also going to be pushing more downloadable stereo 3D content over the PlayStation Network this year…

Ive been playing DeBlob 2,killzone 3,crysis 2,motorstorm apocalypse and gran turismo 5 all in 3D on the PS3 and i must say being able to just turn on the ps3 and get straight to it is a lot more convenient then faffing about with the pc.
My only gripe is the few games i have where sony or particular game developer try to gouge you for more money in the form of dlc to patch the game to 3D .

being that a ps3 barely has the graphics capabilities of a 4 year old nvidia 9800GT, how does it produce stereoscopic 3d at a decent framerate? does it tone down the graphics for the 3d to work smoothly?

Games in 720p, more optimized code, some compromise with graphics/extra details… there are a lot of things that can be done to add in stereo 3D support in the loop with hardly any visible difference for the end user… if things are properly done.

As ive heard, DirectX is blocking computer graphics cards from their full potential.

A computer with a graphics card with similair performances to the one in the playstation, would proberly not be able to run some of the newest games at 720p in 3D, at decent framerates.

To be honest 3DTV Play reduces me to 720p on my 3D HDTV so not much difference visually playing on the ps3, framerate is probably higher on the pc, but im not anal about this type of thing good enough is fine for me.
Considering how much i paid for 2 X Nvidia cards for sli and the rest of the bits for my pc the ps3 compares very favourably.

Id just like to add im fortunate enough to be able to afford a 3dtv and also a pretty high spec PC to run games with, the cost of all this in my opinion is prohibitive to most people i know. These same people have got ps3 consoles under theyre current hdtv and the fact that they could upgrade to a 3dtv and be able to use there ps3’s for 3D content is a great incentive to adopt 3D.
3D blu Ray player, extra glasses, cable or satellite carrying 3d channel, high spec pc for 3d gaming, none of this comes cheap so well done sony for once cause i generally think your greedy corporate tossers who overprice your products.

I love my 3dvision pc, playing Bulletstorm currently on the PC and it looks great.
But since I have my Optoma switchbox to connect my PS3 to my DLP-3d Projector I have fallen in love with the console.
You just switch everything on and you have perfectly optimized and very impressing 3d.
Killzone 3 played in 3d using the sharpshooter move addon on a projector is the best gaming experience of my life.
Simply mindblowing. You are in the middle of the game like never before.
Resolution, textures and aliasing might not be up to our pc standards, but the whole 3d-experiences makes me forget this easily.

Ive been thinking of going ‘3D’ and unsure wether to go the PC way of PS3 route? with sony annocuncing thier ‘afforidable PS 3d tv’ ? hmm…. could be a cheaper option!
