Mafia II Demo is Now Available, Works Great in Stereo 3D Mode

August 10th, 2010 · 18 Comments · Stereo 3D Games

Today the demo of the anticipated Mafia 2 game was made available to the general public with the full game becoming available a bit later this month – August 24th in North America and 27th in Europe. Mafia II takes advantage of Nvidia’s PhysX technology and is going to be a 3D Vision Ready title, working well also with triple monitor 3D Vision Surround setups. What you need to we bell aware of is the fact that the game is quite demanding in terms of graphic power needed if you want to play it with maximum detail level and PhysX set to high, let alone in stereo 3D mode on top of that. The recommended to have GPU is a GTX 260 without using PhysX and 3D Vision and for more you better have a Fermi-based video card ready and SLI with at least 460s would be good to have in order to crank up the PhysX level and play in stereo 3D mode with comfortable framerates. For 3D Vision Surround Nvidia recommends you to have GTX 480 in SLI and an optional dedicated for PhysX graphics card which may be a bit overkill just for a single game, but Mafia II might as well turn out to be “the game” that is worth upgrading your PC for. I’m not yet sure how well it will work on ATI-based GPUs, but then again there you will miss the additional details provided by the PhysX support along with most likely no stereo 3D mode support, although you might still have some options for that.

The demo for the game is available on Steam and it includes support for bot PhysX (off, medium and high modes) as well as 3D Vision, so it can give you an idea on what to expect from the full game when it comes out. There is also a heavy benchmark mode that can show you a bit disappointing framerates even on hig-end configurations, because there is a lot of physical calculations going on in the scenes rendered in the benchmark and with PhysX set to high you’ll be out for a surprise, especially if you test in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision even on GTX 480. Anyway, you better try the demo yourself, it is available now, than to just read impressions from it, just be prepared that you might finally need an upgrade for your PC to fully enjoy the game. Below you’ll also find some screenshots in stereo 3D mode that I’ve took inside the demo of Mafia 2, they are in 1680×1050 resolution, with maximum details, AA on (2x SSAA only) and PhysX set to High, so you can get an idea on what to expect. You may notice a bit of ghosting in specific scenes (it is a monitor-related issue, and not the game being responsible), but in overall the game looks great in stereo 3D as expected from a 3D Vision Ready title.

    3Dvision doesn’t work for me….too bad !

  • 2 wounding // Aug 10, 2010 at 14:30

Cant get 3d vision to work either.

Be a bit more specific, as with such comments it is hard to tell what is the possible cause for your issue…

I’ve used the latest 1.33 beta CD released a few days ago as it had updated 3D Vision profile for Mafia II and had no trouble running the demo with 3D Vision.

May be an issue with running physX and 3d together. I will try updating the profile to the 1.33 beta and report back.

I’ve had PhysX running on High with 3D Vision enabled with no problems, although in scenes with heavy PhysX the framerate was dropping below 20 fps ;)

Ok beta 1.33 driver cleared up the issues both PhysX and 3d vision worked just fine.

PhysX takes a monumental toll on performance, but is also the most impressive physics I have seen in a game yet. At this time I would suggest a dedicated card solely for PhysX.

    ok i will try, th.

perfect. It works great. (SLI 280 gtx, PhysX on CPU).

@ ludo! Not Really! I have made the following test on a single GTX 295 :
    a) SLI mode , Physx on GPU B (not dedicated).
    b) normal mode (1st GPU for redndering) , Physx on GPU B (dedicated).
    c) SLI mode, Physx on CPU.
    d) SLI mode, Physx OFF.
    The results:
I have a Amd PhenomII X4 945 CPU not OC. Every setting was set to max(including antialising, high Physx etc) @ 1680X1050 (max resolution) + 3D vision ON.
    a):
MAX 62 fps AVG 22.9 fps MIN 7.5 fps.
    b):
MAX 44 fps AVG 17.4 fps MIN 4.2 fps.
    c):
MAX 42 fps AVG 15.2 fps MIN 3.3 fps.
    d):
MAX 90.9 fps AVG 30.2 fps MIN 9 fps.

    So the best settings are:
    a) SLI mode , Physx on GPU B (not dedicated). not on CPU.

—All tests were made with 3D vision ON—

I have black textures with 3d vision. hmm…

  • 11 Bloody // Aug 10, 2010 at 20:50

Two 480s in SLI give out quite similar results with PhysX enabled, so I do hope that the final game will be more optimized…

You can also check the PhysX is running on the CPU or on the GPU by enabling the visual PhysX indicator from the control panel and reinstall PhysX if needed as described here: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79364

is the convergency locked on mafia 2 ? couldn’t change it here. About the black txtures the beta driver solves it.

  • 13 ludo // Aug 11, 2010 at 11:45

@helifax : very strange, i guess it depends on cpu
    My (little) bench :
    SLI GT285, Q9650 (Quad Core oc @4GhZ)
Every setting was set to max.

    a) SLI / PhysX on CPU : AvG 20,1 fps
    b) SLI / PhysX on GPUb not dedicated : 15,5 fps

    Really interesting..
I see that you have your CPU OC@4ghz. Mine is standard at 3ghz. Maybe from here comes all the performance? Or maybe from my actual GTX295 being a single PCB card… I will try to OC my CPU as well up to 3.6Ghz which is the stable threshold (my cpu multiplier is locked not being a black edition) and come with news.
Also the following is possible : Maybe Physx is better implemented on Intel CPU to handle then AMD ones. Having Physx on CPU didn’t made my CPU more stressed that normal playing the game with Physx on GPU.

hi guys. The game runs quite smooth here. Im using 1680 4x AF and AA on in 3d vision (physx medium, but is playable in high too).

    My specs are core i7 4.2 ghz and gtx 470 @ 805 mhz GPU / 1650 memory.
I’m really happy to see how good it works here.

There was an update for the demo released on Steam yesterday, so if you had bad performance before it should be better after downloading the update.

Hi, which Monitor do you use and how much 3D deep( percent ?)

  • 18 Frodoshire // Aug 29, 2010 at 09:50

It works for me now, as with the people who posted on here (you just need to download the full cd beta 1.3) from the Nvidia website. Uninstall your current driver for 3d vision and install the new driver from beta 1.3.
