Maingear Builds a 3D Vision Surround Simulator for Nvidia

June 25th, 2010 · 2 Comments · GeForce 3D Vision

A video demonstrating an interesting project done by Maingear for Nvidia – a 3D Vision Surround racing simulator setup using a water cooled PC with two Fermi cards, 3x 120Hz monitors and a seat with “vibration” (they’ve probably used some parts of the system already done for a previous project with a single display). Looks quite nice, kind of Pimp My Ride MTV style, but I would’ve liked a bit more technical details too and also to see some footage of the building process, maybe some trouble they’ve had and how they overcame them etc. We can of course all drool over the system or start building our own version, and I’m almost ready with the water cooled computer… finally… :P

Not a bad getup for sure, but I remain unimpressed. The thing is I must be corrupted because I’ve been gaming and watching on a 120in HD projector setup for over to years now so when I see three screens slapped on together I just think “that’s cool, but it can’t be nearly as immersive as a giant screen with 3d vision”.

Just curious though, don’t you think that same setup would be 100x better if there was a small projector mounted above the headrest that projected on a widescreen about the same size as those 3 monitors.. very slim and long. Essentially the 3d vision surround monitor space would be the same but the screen would be flexible and angled to give peripheral vision. I guess basically you would need an ultra wide projector that can throw a 5760×1080 resolution and be 3d vision compatible of course.

Anyway I guess that’ll never happen since it wouldn’t fit in the computer gamer’s usual setup.. it would just be perfect for cockpit setups like the one in the video or for an arcade environment. I feel that getting rid of those bezel seperations is a big obstacle and those bezels just ruin it for me.

you don’t need to spend to much have a good computer with 3D, here some examples:
